119

Black screen.

REI:“Who's there?”

120

Rei's eye UP.

REI:“Me?”

121

Rei inside the plug.

REI:“The me inside the Eva.”

Mr. Tines: Is this acknowledging the Rei apparition we saw in the cross-over experiment as a separate but equal?

UrsusArctos: Seems so, yes. This line is the best available bug spray when dealing with the cockroach-like "Naoko in Eva-00" theory.

122

Dr. Nick: Remember this effect? In Episode 20 (Cut 244) it signaled Shinji identifying the person next to him. It's the same usage here.

123

Rei inside the plug.

REI:“No, I can sense that there's someone other than me.”

124

Insert of Rei pictures.

125

Eye UP. T·U.

REI:“Who are you?”

126

Rei UP.

REI:“An Angel? The person that we call an Angel?”

UrsusArctos: Rei recognizes Angels as people, just as she does the Evas. Even if her status as a vessel of Lilith isn't explicit at this point, there's no denying that she knows a lot more about the Evas and Angels than either Shinji or Asuka.

127

A Rei standing in the water, looking down, her face hidden from view.

REI VOICE:“Won't you become one with me?”

UrsusArctos: Of course, the Rei in the water represents Armisael, while the floating Rei seen in the next cut represents the Rei we know.

128

Two Rei opposing one another.
The other Rei is just barely floating above the water's surface.

REI:“No. I am me. I am not you.”

REI VOICE:“I see, but it's no use. It's too late now.”

129

Rei being invaded by the Angel from her abdomen out (beneath the plug suit).
However, her expression does not change.

130

The Rei standing in the water, her head hanging.

REI VOICE:“I'll share what's in my heart with you. I'll share this feeling with you.”

Dr. Nick: So, what is Armisael's motivation for doing this? Being the last of Adam's children, did it come to the realization that their side has lost and therefore just came to torture the Eva pilots by sharing its pain? Cut 158 shows that it launches after Eva-01 immediately after Shinji activates the AT Field, whilst ignoring Asuka because she doesn't get her field up, so it isn't just targeting Rei.

One theory, courtesy of the additional DC scenes, is that Armisael is somehow trying to resurrect its dead siblings, but more about that in a bit.

131

Rei hangs in.

132

The Rei in the water lifts her face when she speaks.
She has a gleeful expression.

REI VOICE:“Doesn't it hurt? See? Doesn't your heart ache?”

133

Rei considers this calmly.

REI:“Hurt? No, you're wrong. It's... ...loneliness?”

134

This time they are looking face-to-face.

REI:“Yes, it's loneliness, isn't it?”

REI VOICE:“Loneliness? I don't understand.”

REI:“You hate being alone, don't you? There are so many of us, and yet, you hate being alone.”

dzzthink: Only Rei would know that "there are many of us". She is essentially having a conversation with an Angel that knows her deepest darkest secrets and is being mocked for them.

UrsusArctos: This could be foreshadowing of the Reiquarium, but "there are many of us" could refer to human beings(Lilin) and suggest that Rei identifies herself as Lilin, not knowing the deepest, darkest secret about herself.

135

Rei side profile UP.

REI:“That is what loneliness is.”

136

The other Rei, smiling.

REI VOICE:“That is what is inside your heart.”

137

Her laughing mouth.

REI VOICE:“That is your own heart, overflowing with sorrow.”

138

A droplet falls to the water's surface.
