ASUKA (OFF):“Okay, I'll die with you, Mom. So, please don't quit being my mom! Okay, Mom?!”

MOTHER (OFF):“Die with me.”

DOLL (in mother's voice):“Mom? I don't know what you mean.”

Dr. Nick: Interestingly, the Classified Information files actually detail how Kyoko's soul splitting went down: only "the maternal component that loves her daughter above all else remained within Eva Unit-02." Based solely on what is shown in this episode, one could also arrive in an opposite interpretation, ie. everything besides some sliver of her maternal side was sucked inside the Eva, and absent of any other, rational aspects of her being, husk-Kyoko's love for her child was corrupted into this death-seeking thing. Shockingly, the show went with a less dark option!

The next obvious question is, was Kyoko's soul put back together after her human body perished? As evidenced by some small audio cues (the incongruous "Die with me's") in EoE, this is indeed the case. But is Kyoko eligible to return from the sea of LCL, considering her Evangelion body presumably died right before Instrumentality and her soul should therefore be floating free? This we have absolutely no way of knowing.


UrsusArctos: That makes far more sense than the CI interpretation of it. Seems to me like both elements of Kyoko's split soul cohabited within Eva-02 without actually recombining, sort of like Harry Potter cohabiting with the sliver of Voldemort's soul that latched onto him when he got his famous scar.

Dr. Nick: Speaking of soul-splitting along personality component lines, the 2020 science fiction film Minor Premise features a fascinating take on the same basic concept. The main character, neuroscientist Ethan, doesn't accidentally remove anything from himself, but he does fracture his consciousness into ten different aspects, each of which has control over his body for six minutes at a time. The rest of the film then turns into this big race of putting Humpty Dumpty back together again before it's too late to revert the damage.
