261

AOBA (OFF):“Both Evas are in position.”

262

IBUKI (OFF):“AT field generation ready.”

RITSUKO (OFF):“Roger.”

263

HYUGA (OFF):“Sixty seconds to mine drop.”

266

ASUKA:“What's happening?!”

267

268

269

MISATO:“Status report!”

HYUGA:“Unknown!”

IBUKI:“All meters and gauges are going off the scale.”

RITSUKO:“But we haven't done anything yet.”

270

MISATO:“No way, Shinji?!”

RITSUKO (OFF):“It's impossible!”

271

RITSUKO:“Unit 01's power level is zero!”

Mr. Tines: "...which is the same as infinite" (Thank you, Shin Eva)

UrsusArctos: Bloodsoaked imitations of birth don't get more violent or gory than this, with the possible exception of Chestbursters from the Alien franchise.

Mbryo: An interesting note is that Leliel's namesake, the angel "Lailah(לַיְלָה)" in Jewish mythology, is the angel of conception who watches over unborn babies until their birth. Hence the violent 'birth' analogy in this scene. Another side note is that Lailah shares the roots of her name with Lilith, both stemming from the Hebrew word for "night", possibly referencing the fact that Unit 01 is a being 'born' from Lilith.

283

ASUKA:“I'm piloting something like that?”

Mr. Tines: As if the people around her had not been bad enough, now Yui puts the boot in

284

285

RITSUKO:“What kind... what kind of monster”

286

RITSUKO (OFF):“have we copied from?”

MISATO (MONO):“I know that the Evas aren't just copies of the First Angel.”

UrsusArctos: This line doesn't make sense if you think of the Evas as copies of Adam, the monster that knocked Earth's axis around and destroyed Antarctica with Second Impact - why wouldn't any copies of such a monster be monstrous? However, when you know that Eva-01 was grown from Lilith and can serve as a substitute for her at Third Impact, a fact that Ritsuko knows perfectly well and Misato doesn't, Ritsuko's horrified reaction makes total sense. Ritsuko's appalled at what Lilith might be capable of when the time comes to use her and she isn't willing to play around. (A well-founded fear, as it turns out).

287

MISATO (MONO):“But”

288

MISATO (MONO):“what is Nerv going to do with them once all the Angels have been destroyed?”

UrsusArctos: Evangelion has a habit of putting in million-dollar questions in places where a viewer would either not notice, or be distracted by other events going on. The horrific "birth" and the retrieval of Shinji hide how big a question this is. For bonus points, Misato is sizing up the Evas as a potential enemy.
