REI:“Unit 02! Field to maximum!”

268

ASUKA:“I'm doing it!”

269

271

SHINJI:“Now!”

274

UrsusArctos: Here the A.T. Field takes a membrane-like quality and is cut by the prog knife, instead of being parted/dissipated with the Eva's hands like in Episode 02.

Dr. Nick: This is one of the few places where the A.T. Field's normally invisible utility is made more concretely understandable: the Angel's field couldn't be sliced open like this if not for the Evangelions' fields counteracting it.

275

ASUKA:“Bastard!”

279

Mr. Tines: We got the "Earth-shattering KABOOM!" this time.

UrsusArctos: The hill in the foreground disappears during the explosion. In Episode 14 we see a rather different animation being used for Sahaquiel going boom.

Dr. Nick: Oh, the wonders of cell-animation era crunch. This is quite possibly the biggest animation blooper in the original TV series proper that doesn't get creatively retconned.

290

AOBA (OFF):“Our wireless communications have been restored. We're receiving a message from Commander Ikari at the South Pole.”

291

MISATO (OFF):“Connect him here.”

AOBA (OFF):“Yes, Ma'am.”

292

UrsusArctos: Although Gendo and Fuyutsuki were implied to be on the Midway-class carrier seen earlier, Gendo's transmission shows he's calling from DDG-099, which is the real-life designation of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Farragut. The Farragut wasn't in existence at the time the show was made, so this may well be a fictitious destroyer he's aboard at this point.

293

MISATO:“I'm very sorry, Sir. My selfish decision has caused Unit 01 to incur damage. The responsibility is entirely mine.”

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“That is not a problem. Destroying Angels is the Evas' purpose. In fact, we are fortunate to have sustained such minimal damage.”

IKARI (OFF):“Yes, excellent work, Major Katsuragi.”

MISATO:“Thank you, Sir.”

IKARI (OFF):“By the way, is the pilot of Unit 01 there?”

294

295

SHINJI:“Yes, Sir!”

296

IKARI (OFF):“I've received the report. Good work, Shinji.”

UrsusArctos: Finally. Hearing Gendo praise his son seems like a bigger miracle than getting rid of Sahaquiel.

297

SHINJI:“Yes, Sir.”

IKARI (OFF):“Now, Major Katsuragi, I'll leave the rest in your hands.”

MISATO:“Yes, Sir.”

301

ANNOUNCEMENT:“Next station is New Miyanoshita,”

302

ASUKA (OFF):“Now you're going to have to keep your promise.”

ANNOUNCEMENT:“New Miyanoshita. The exit will switch to the left side at the next station.”

303

MISATO:“Of course! I withdrew a fortune, so I can even handle a full-course dinner.”

MISATO (MONO):“Though it's before payday...”

304

TEXT:“Ramen”

305

ASUKA:“We know the state of your wallet. You can take it easy.”

Mr. Tines: Good body language in this cut.

306

ASUKA (OFF):“And Miss Perfect said she'd join us if it was for ramen noodles.”

REI (OFF):“I'll have a garlic ramen with no roast pork.”

ASUKA (OFF):“I'll have shark fin with roast pork. Large!”

307

RAMEN DUDE (OFF):“There you go, one shark fin with roast pork!”

UrsusArctos: Given the near-extinction of many shark species for shark fin soup, Asuka's dietary choices seem rather insensitive, to say the least. But this is me speaking with complete ignorance about public attitudes towards shark fin soup/ramen in Japan in 1995.

308

SHINJI (OFF):“Say, Miss Misato?”

MISATO (OFF):“What?”

SHINJI (OFF):“When I heard my father's words earlier, I think I finally understood what it's like to feel happy when you're praised.”

309

SHINJI (OFF):“And I also realized that maybe I pilot the Eva because I wanted to hear those words from him.”

ASUKA:“You're piloting for something like that?”

UrsusArctos: Pay attention to Misato's expression. Shinji's piloting the Eva only because he wants his father's love and praise, which is the opposite of what she wanted to get by using them for revenge against the Angels. It also makes you feel sad for Shinji being starved of parental affection like this.

310

ASUKA (OFF):“You really are stupid.”

Zusuchan: Asuka's statement compared to Shinji's happy face is almost hilarious, but is ultimately too tragic.
