298

REI (OFF):“It appears the target is going to invade HQ”

299

REI:“using a powerful liquid solvent.”

SHINJI (OFF):“What'll we do?”

ASUKA (OFF):“We're going to beat it, of course.”

Mr. Tines: After the poor showing she made earlier in the journey through the GeoFront, now it's a combat situation with no higher command trying to micro-manage, Asuka's training cuts in. It's a pity that later occasions, the officer of the day interferes to the detriment of small unit cohesion.

300

SHINJI:“Sure, but how? We dropped our rifles,”

301

SHINJI (OFF):“and the battery packs are running out.”

302

SHINJI (OFF):“They won't last more than another three minutes.”

ASUKA:“I have a plan.”

303

ASUKA (OFF):“The one who stays here will be defense. Their job is to neutralize the AT Field,”

304

ASUKA (OFF):“and to protect the offensive player”

305

ASUKA (OFF):“from the liquid solvent. The backup player will go down,”

306

ASUKA (OFF):“pick up the rifles,”

307

ASUKA (OFF):“and hand them to the offense. The offense will then fire a volley to destroy the target.”

308

ASUKA:“Does that sound good?”

UrsusArctos: It is good, and it shows that Asuka is both intelligent and trained for the job. What a shame we don't get to see her use her abilities in future fights.

Zusuchan: If it wasn't for her ego and desire to always be seen as the best/be validated, she would probably be the best pilot.

309

REI:“Fine. I will take the defense.”

ASUKA (OFF):“Sorry, but it's not you.”

310

ASUKA:“I'll do it.”

SHINJI (OFF):“No way! It's dangerous!”

ASUKA:“That's why. I don't want to stay indebted to you from last time.”

311

ASUKA:“Shinji's on offense. Miss Perfect is the backup. Got it?”

REI (OFF):“Understood.”

312

313

ASUKA:“Okay, here we go!”

314

ASUKA (OFF):“Gehen!”

324

UrsusArctos: The rockets in Eva-00's pylons are immensely cool, and it's one of those things I wish was put to use later in the series.

Dr. Nick: Indeed. This episode features several useful pieces of Eva equipment (extra pylon batteries, these boosters) that weirdly don't get much screentime elsewhere. The boosters especially could be life-saving, as firing them point-blank at your enemy when being pinned down is a classic mecha trope.

326

327

328

SHINJI (OFF):“Ayanami!”

329

330

331

332

SHINJI:“Asuka, get out of the way!”

333

334

335

336

UrsusArctos: There's something about the classically animated lighting of the scene and the projectiles going past Eva-02 that I find pretty, even if it's a very brief shot.

337

Mr. Tines: "I was expecting an Earth-shattering KABOOM!" This is a fairly anti-climactic end for an Angel.

UrsusArctos: As far as Angels go, Matarael seems to be a third-rate jobber (unless it has other abilities we never get to see). It's the only one to be turned into a sieve by a plain vanilla pallet rifle, and we don't even get to see Nerv dispose of the corpse like we did with Ramiel.

Dr. Nick: Matarael was too smart for its own good. But the pilots were also lucky because the Angel was apparently constantly synthesizing its acid instead of having some sort of giant bladder full of it, as there was no gigantic acid flood when its body got perforated.

338

339

ASUKA:“Now we're even.”
