So, we could be dealing with a much smaller world population in general, which would make 20,000 seem like a much bigger number in comparison.

However, think of it this way: It's very possible that millions of people would've already died within the first few years. So, we could be dealing with a much smaller world population in general, which would make 20,000 seem like a much bigger number in comparison.
