Dr. Nick: As horrifying as this whole sequence is, Armisael's moe girl shriek when yoinked never fails to make me smile.

IBUKI:“The Field has reached its limit! The core will not be able to maintain it at this rate!”

UrsusArctos: Wait, where the hell is Gendo? Eva-01 nearly got infected by Armisael and Rei and Eva-00 are doomed...what the devil happened to him during these crucial moments?

MISATO:“Rei, abandon the Eva and get out of there!”

UrsusArctos: Rei sees a vision of the one person willing to save her from doom, and who is now nowhere to be seen when she's facing certain death. Combined with the tears in her eyes, this is tragedy at its purest.

UrsusArctos: Eva-00 turning into a glowing, Eva-sized giant Rei is an addition to the Director's Cut version, in the original the Eva simply blew up with Armisael still attached. The armor and even the umbilical cable mysteriously "phase out" into complete nonexistence as the transformation happens. Notice how she's still reaching out to Gendo in her last moments - and he's nowhere to be seen or heard.

UrsusArctos: Of all the continuity errors and bloopers in Evangelion, this is probably the worst of them all. One cut ago they were fighting Armisael at Owakudani some distance outside of the built-up Tokyo-3 area, which is at the north end of Ashinoko. Now the explosion takes place at the dead center of the city, and gets rid of everything when nothing but trees and hillocks were visible a moment ago.

Dr. Nick: Even if the location made sense, it's not much of a city destruction sequence. The explosion doesn't really look appreciably different from all the other Angel death explosions, and you're just supposed to infer its gigantic scale during the one second the buildings are visible. But I also understand why the DC version doesn't add any gratuitous nuke porn here (even though that is definitely Anno's jam): the focus is kept on Rei freaking dying.
