	292		UrsusArctos: This shot of the moon opens the Director's Cut version of Episode 22 in lieu of A Cruel Angel's Thesis. Episode 22' adds the most extra scenes and runs longer than other episodes, coming off as very different from the original Episode 22. Incidentally, I first thought that it was a rare instance of the Moon being associated with Asuka (rather than Rei) but Dr. Nick's comment in Cut 309 made me realize that the moon - which subtly bookends this sequence with the broken doll in moonlight - stands in for Rei, Asuka's hated "doll", like it usually does. Asuka is lit up by the symbolic representation of who or what she hates, and her fears and hatreds boil up to the surface in a way that they didn't when we first saw her in sunlight.
	293	ASUKA (OFF):“Man, I guess we will be in Japan by tomorrow. And Misato said she'd come pick me up by lunch.”	UrsusArctos: This brief sequence is actually quite gorgeous, especially since it's rendered in classic night coloring. The dark shapes of the Su-33 aircraft on deck, the ominous low-intensity lighting around the carrier's island and the LED lighting of Asuka's stereo all look so damn good.

	295	ASUKA (OFF):“Oh, Misato's the person who was in Germany before you, Mr. Kaji.”

	297	ASUKA (OFF):“I don't really like her much. The way she lives is so affected.”

	299	ASUKA:“Man, I guess this is going to be goodbye for a while. That's so boring!” KAJI:“Once you get to Japan, I'm sure you'll make lots of new boyfriends.”

	309	ASUKA:“So look at me!”	Dr. Nick: Dolls are the central motif of this episode, and Asuka's hatred of doll-like behavior triggers a famous interaction that ultimately contributes to bringing down both Seele's and Gendo's plans. UrsusArctos: Indeed, Asuka's hatred of doll-like behavior extends to a hatred of Rei. The spotlight on the broken doll looks like moonlight just like the moon opens this sequence. Combined with Rei's own lunar associations, we have both the objects of Asuka's hatred being invoked in one image. Ironically, Asuka's hated "doll" eventually states that she's no puppet and torpedoes Gendo's (and Seele's) plans too!
