Kendrix: Misato looks rather helpless and small in this shot, standing all alone in the corridor. She immediately rushed down to see Shinji and followed the tray, but she was unable to do anything concrete.
This could tie into her whole conflict in ep 4 where she's uncertain about forcing such a burden on a child - she can't do the 'hard', fighthing part herself.
Maybe the helplessness she felt in this instant was what motivated her to play the little part she could play the best she could by coming up with the entire operation Yashima business.
