AKAGI:“The Magi are the three parts that make up who I am. The scientist in me, the mother in me, and the woman in me.”

UrsusArctos: Of these three, Casper (whom we were introduced to in Episode 13) turns out to be the most important by far. Melchior is assigned the number 1, Balthasar 2, and Caspar 3. Assuming that Naoko is talking about them in numerical order, we can infer that Melchior has the personality of her as a scientist and Balthasar has the personality of her as a mother.

RITSUKO:“The three parts of you... The only thing left is to power it up, right?”

Dr. Nick: Leave it to Gendo to badly socialize a child. If we're tracking Lilith's soul right, Rei I doesn't even have the "nuts because of split soul" excuse for her behavior like Kyoko does because at this point in time her soul should still be intact. The splitting presumably happened after her murder, once her soul had been sucked out of her corpse. The trauma of this murder is also presumably what triggers Unit-00's berserk incidents.


UrsusArctos: Given that Rei 1 is the Rei in the Eva, maybe her soul was split by this point after all? Maybe Gendo split Rei's soul ahead of time with the intention of making Rei 1 the pilot and Rei 2 the resident soul in the Eva, only for the murder to result in him switching the two around. I imagine a practical advantage in having two copies of Rei, each with a different half of soul : a body with the full soul of Lilith could be genuinely dangerous, and Rei 3 apparently has A.T. Field generation abilities to rival Kaworu's.

Mbryo: Rei-1's personality shows what Lilith's personality was originally like before her experience as Rei Ayanami; innocent but cruel at the same time. Not the stereotypical personality you'd expect the mother of all living beings to have. It reflects the fact that Lilith was originally represented as a demoness in mythology. Also interesting to note that her personality bears significant similarities with Kaworu's personality in Sadamoto's manga adaptation.

RussianRiz: Ah, the choking. Certainly something significant in the franchise. The rejection of the other. In this case, Rei 1 resembles Yui directly, which is why Naoko attacked her.


UrsusArctos: And what a powerful rejection of the other this is! Along with Shinji choking Asuka in End of Evangelion, we have Eva-01 choking Eva-03 and breaking its neck, and Kyoko breaking the neck of the Asuka doll before hanging herself. The black silhouettes on red evoke violence very powerfully, and are seen again when Asuka finds Kyoko hanging. Naoko's comment is creepily appropriate for Rei - who literally can be replaced if she dies, and her second incarnation uses Naoko's very words - but also for her daughter, Ritsuko, whose own actions land up with her being replaced by Rei. There's a whole cycle of tragedy and irony woven into Naoko's statement here.

RussianRiz: That cut hits us hard as much as it did to her.

UrsusArctos: If Naoko strangling Rei 1 was the woman (Casper) part of her personality rejecting the woman who was not her and who resembled her hated rival, the look of absolute horror on her face - a "My God, what have I done?!?" look if I ever saw one - is the result of the maternal (Balthasar) part of her personality reacting in utter horror to her murdering a child. Naoko as a woman rejected another, and now Naoko as a mother rejects herself. The part of her personality that went into the Magi Casper, the part of her that rejects others violently, leaves open the gateway to absolute mayhem in End of Evangelion.

Sailor Haumea: For some reason, the definitive draft of this ep (the last draft before the storyboard phase) explicitly has Rei I survive Naoko strangling her and depicts her as waking up after Naoko's suicide and looking around before leaving the room. The footnotes for the script (as printed in Evangelion Original) state that this part was removed on Gainax's request, but the fact that Rei I was originally intended to not die in this scene is very odd and raises more questions than answers, honestly.


UrsusArctos: The scene description was translated by the legendary Bochan_bird and the footnote's existence was confirmed by EML stalwart Seventh Messenger, so there's no doubt this is accurate. Hot damn, I wish we had someone to translate Original in full! Why did they want Rei I to survive at first, and who in Gainax chose to reverse it? All mysterious, and all so very interesting! In more minor changes, the original script had Naoko die on top of Caspar, but in Cut 259 she dies on Balthasar, which is an interesting little switch considering which parts of her personality those two represent.

FUYUTSUKI (MONO):“The Human Instrumentality Project Committee, chaired by Kiel Lorenz, dissolved the research organization, Gehirn, the next day.”

UrsusArctos: Just like Gendo proposed the Human Instrumentality Project - or at least a clear roadmap for the HIP and Seele's end goals - after Yui's death, it's Naoko's death that brings about the dissolution of Gehirn and formation of Nerv - ostensibly by Kiel but almost certainly at Gendo's behest. Are these massive transitions some kind of way for Gendo to pave over his loss in both cases?

UrsusArctos: If you look closely, you'll see the number 2 on the Magi. Naoko's maternal side would understandably have been the most horrified at her own actions, and true enough, she committed suicide on top of Balthasar, the Magi containing the maternal part of her personality. Interestingly, the original script had her die on top of Caspar, representing the womanly part of her personality and implicitly the side responsible for the murder in the first place.
