219

220

221

SHINJI:“Where am I?”

222

SHINJI:“Inside the Eva.”

223

SHINJI:“Inside the Eva? Did I pilot the Eva again?”

224

SHINJI:“Why?”

225

MISATO:“You won't pilot the Eva anymore?”

226

SHINJI:“I've decided I will never pilot Eva again.”

227

MISATO:“But you did pilot Evangelion Unit 01.”

228

229

MISATO:“Shinji, you are here now because you piloted the Eva.”

230

231

MISATO:“You are the person you are now because you piloted the Eva.”

232

233

MISATO:“You cannot deny it, that you in fact piloted the Eva, nor can you deny the self that you have been so far, which is your past.”

234

235

MISATO:“But as for what you will do from now on, you must decide for yourself.”

236

SHINJI:“I... I...”

237

238

MISATO:“If it can't... If it can't even save one life, then what good is science?! Give Shinji back!”

239

MISATO:“Give him back!”

240

Mr. Tines: Cue discontinuity

241

242

243

SHINJI:“A smell... A person's smell? Miss Misato? Ayanami?”

244

245

SHINJI:“No, not them.”

246

247

SHINJI:“That's right. This is the smell of my mother.”

248

IKARI (OFF):“So he will live in this world, in the hell after the Second Impact?”

YUI (OFF):“Oh, but if you have the will to live, anywhere can be heaven. Because he is alive. He'll have plenty of chances to find happiness.”

IKARI (OFF):“I see. That's very true.”

dzzthink: His quest to find his mother and her leading him back to the real world is similar to the end of EoE. His faint recollection of his mother are key to resolving his past abandonment issues.

UrsusArctos: All the same, I find the entire conversation between Gendo and Yui bizarre. It may be true that one can find happiness where one has the will to live, but the way Yui brushes off Gendo's very valid concerns - and the way Gendo caves in to Yui's rather vacuous reassurances - comes off as plain messed up.

249A

SHINJI:“Mother...”

249B

250

YUI (OFF):“Have you decided yet?”

IKARI (OFF):“If it's a boy, Shinji. If it's a girl, I'll name her Rei.”

YUI (OFF):“Shinji... Rei...”

251

SHINJI:“Mother...”

252

253

254

255

MISATO (OFF):“Shinji!”
