005A

005B

IBUKI (OFF):“Damage on both Eva units”

006

IBUKI (OFF):“is beyond the Hayflick Limit.”

RITSUKO (OFF):“It'll take time”

Mr. Tines: The Hayflick limit is is the number of times a normal somatic, differentiated human cell population will divide before cell division stops (due to telomere erosion).

007

RITSUKO (OFF):“before everything goes back to normal.”

008A

IBUKI (OFF):“Fortunately,”

008B

IBUKI (OFF):“the Magi System can be transferred.”

009

IBUKI:“We'll start working on that as early as tomorrow.”

RITSUKO:“But this place will have to be scrapped.”

010

AOBA (OFF):“It's just a matter of time before the brass decides to abandon it.”

RITSUKO (OFF):“That's true.”

011

RITSUKO:“For the time being,”

012

RITSUKO (OFF):“we'll have to use the backup Secondary Control Center.”

IBUKI (OFF):“You mean, even without the Magi?”

RITSUKO (OFF):“That's right.”

013

RITSUKO:“We'll dust it off and be working again by this afternoon.”

IBUKI:“But these chairs are hard, and the sensors haven't been broken in, so it's difficult to work here.”

AOBA:“Even though the layout is the same as the control center we're familiar with.”

IBUKI:“It just doesn't feel right, you know?”

Mr. Tines: Surely someone on staff would be able to move the surviving chairs...

Dr. Nick: There's a little bit of missed visual storytelling potential here. Maya may complain about the chairs, but in practical terms the secondary control center is indistinguishable from the original; it would better drive home Nerv's precarious situation if the secondary one had the same layout but was otherwise noticeably smaller and dingier. Our heroes have had their battle bridge knocked out, and there are still some presumably very strong Angels to deal with.

014

RITSUKO:“At least we can use this place. But what we don't know is whether we can still use Unit 01.”

015

Mr. Tines: Still unanswered, how they caged the raving beast; and what state it was in at the time (e.g. shedding more and more armour)

UrsusArctos: Sadamoto tried to address this in his manga by having Tokyo-3's surviving defensive systems restrain the rampaging Eva, with the implication that the city's defenses were really built to keep the Evas in rather than the Angels out. Not the greatest of explanations, but there doesn't seem to be a better answer to the question.

Mbryo: I'm guessing that Yui let herself be captured, or just shut down on her own after she was done with all the screaming. She did the same thing in Episode 02 and 16. Yui is in control of the Evangelion's actions so despite how animalistic she may appear to be, she has no reason to be hostile towards humanity.

dzzthink: The calmness and quietness compared to the events of the previous episode are quite eerie, to say the least. This juxtaposition and lack of further information on what happened are similar to when Unit 1 first goes berserk when fighting Sachiel, which then cuts to Shinji waking up in the hospital and the events only being retold in a flashback.

016

017

MISATO:“Restrained by the cage... are you sure it's safe?”

HYUGA:“No internal thermal, electron, electromagnetic, or chemical energy readings are being detected. The S2 engine is completely inactive.”

MISATO:“Nevertheless,”

UrsusArctos: I understand bandaging the areas where the bindings were ripped out, but why bandage the head?

dzzthink: It seems like Unit 1’s face was damaged during its fight with Zeruel or maybe when it went berserk. The horn and exterior components may actually just be a type of armour (similar to the samurai Do-maru) and the organic flesh underneath could have been significantly bruised. It’s scary to imagine that Unit one might actually have another face; especially one with that disturbing grin on it.

UrsusArctos: Ah, you've forgotten the face reveal in Episode 02, and that was possibly even more disturbing for the rebirthing eye and lack of a proper mouth...

018

MISATO:“under those conditions, Unit 01 has moved on three separate occasions.”

018B

019

020

021

022

MISATO:“You can't treat it carelessly based only on what we can see and measure.”

HYUGA:“We don't know what it'll do if we meddle with it carelessly. Just like you, Miss Katsuragi.”

023

HYUGA:“I'm sorry.”

024

KEEL:“However, our concerns are not limited to Unit 01.”

COMMITTEEMAN ?:“Correct. Serious damage was sustained by Units 00 and 02. Headquarters was partially destroyed, Central Dogma exposed. The damages are enormous.”

COMMITTEEMAN ?:“We can't even estimate how much money and time we've lost.”

COMMITTEEMAN ?:“All this is because we didn't put a bell around Ikari's neck.”

COMMITTEEMAN ?:“There is a bell, it just didn't ring.”

KEEL:“A bell that doesn't ring serves no purpose.”

025

KEEL:“We'll have the bell take action next time.”

026

KAJI:“My, my, what an unexpected turn of events.”

Mr. Tines: He should have sneezed before speaking.

UrsusArctos: Agreed, although that would've ruined the parallel with Episode 08 and Kaji's rather British tendency for understatement.

027

028

KAJI:“The committee... I mean, how do you intend to explain this to Seele?”

FUYUTSUKI:“Unit 01 wasn't under our control. This was an unexpected accident.”

IKARI:“Therefore Unit 01 will stay frozen until the Committee gives us further orders.”

KAJI:“That's a very appropriate decision. However,”

UrsusArctos: As seen at the start of the episode, the Committee near-immediately came to the conclusion (correctly!) that Gendo wanted this incident to happen and threaten their script. Of course, their trust in him is severely eroded after this, but I wonder how he managed to keep them off his back long enough, even with Eva-01 frozen.

029

KAJI:“is your son still trapped inside it?”

Dr. Nick: Kaji points out Gendo's disturbing lack of concern for his son, but considering that Gendo's plan for the Human Instrumentality does involve combining everyone's souls into one, he might just see this as Shinji skipping the queue. Staying prematurely tanged inside Eva-01 also means that Shinji will definitely stay safe until the Third Impact and the soul fusion. Nerv would be out one pilot, but I guess Gendo assumes the newly S2-powered Yui will be able to handle the remaining Angels by herself if need be.
