Nerv Headquarters
"Making something... Nurturing something is really great. You can see and learn so many things from the process." |
Nerv Headquarters (Nerv HQ) is Nerv's sprawling, and possibly Freudian, primary base of operations. Built in the subterranean GeoFront cavern under Tokyo-3, the base as we know it was mostly completed by the year 2003. It is the command center for all of Nerv's operations across the globe. The focal point of Nerv HQ operation's is the Command Center and the S.C. Magi System, which control the base as well as the entire nation of Japan.
The entire city of Tokyo-3 was essentially built as a fortress to protect Nerv from the Angel threat and to provide housing for all those who worked there. The city was designed with the Evangelions in mind as elevators, power sockets, and weaponry litter the city. According to Gendo Ikari in episode #21 "all the resources mankind has to offer are being poured into that facility," it is truly the last hope mankind has against the Angel threat.
Project E, the Adam Revival Project all began here. Part of the Adam Revival Project, the Evangelions, were researched and developed here, and many of them were also built on location. Nerv HQ and Tokyo-3 are where all active Evangelions and their pilots are based, and it is from Nerv HQ that they are sortied.
The tip of the iceberg, so to speak, of Nerv HQ is the black pyramid that juts into the GeoFront. The black pyramid has an inverted pyramid leading off of it that acts as a resorviour for the base's water needs. Towards the top of this pyramid is Nerv Commander's Office, which has a Tree of Life diagram as well as a image of atomic trails from inside a bubble-chamber.
There are 18 reinforced windows within the superstructure of Tokyo-3 that allow the GeoFront and Nerv HQ to be bathed in natural light.
The GeoFront has a number of train and car-train services that run into it, taking those onboard directly to Nerv HQ, the car train Misato and Shinji take in episode #1 is called the C-22 Special Express.
The central shaft leading down into Terminal Dogma has a spiralling-elevator that opens up onto hexagonal-shaped doors, while the other shafts located about the central shaft have automated pathways that run across their expanses at increments of 10 floors.
Layout
Central Dogma appears to be arranged as a large hexagon, judging from Misato's map as seen in episode #1.
The right wall of Test Facility 2, where the Eva-00 activation tests are carried out, backs on to Eva-01's cage as we learn from episodes #1 and #2. Eva-01's cage is just behind the right side of the Command Center, fairly close behind the Command Center's main screen is the central shaft which leads down into Terminal Dogma, as we learn in episode #20.
In episode #9 we get a nice shot of what is located on basement level 9, see image to right.
Central Dogma
Central Dogma is the codename for the primary subsection of Nerv HQ. Nerv's primary Command Center room is located inside, though there is also a backup command center located several levels down. Most of Nerv's major facilties are located in Central Dogma, including:
- The Pribnow box
- The Artifical Evolution Labortatory, the place where Rei Ayanami is said to have been born.
- The Eva Graveyard for the failed prototype Evas.
- The Dummy Plug Plant, used to produce copies of Rei Ayanami for use as spare parts and as the cores of the Dummy Plug, are located in the "central area" of Central Dogma.
Terminal Dogma
The deepest level of Nerv HQ, the heavily restricted Terminal Dogma, is located 2008 meters below the surface of the GeoFront. It is not entirely clear what level of the Nerv HQ complex Central Dogma is located on, but the ground level of the GeoFront is 0.9 km below the surface city of Tokyo-3, so Terminal Dogma is roughly 3 km below the Earth's surface. The central shaft runs from from the GeoFront all the way down into Terminal Dogma.
Terminal Dogma is only accessible only to those with the highest level of clearance: Gendo Ikari, Kozo Fuyutsuki, and Ritsuko Akagi. Within Terminal Dogma is the "LCL Production Plant."
As Ritsuko takes Misato and Shinji down into Terminal Dogma by helical elevator we are afforded a small glimpse into the strucutre of the Black Moon, with strange honey-comb structures and large desolate spaces that are used as dumping grounds by Gehrin, and later Nerv.
A giant salt lake with stagities with a pink, sparkling canopy is what lies at the end of the central shaft leading into Terminal Dogma, leading off this huge space is "Heaven's Door," beyond which is the room where Lilith is crucifield, and presumably restrained, on a red [cross|tau cross]. About Lilith are heptagons with raditation symbols at the center of each. Lilith's perpetual bleeding of LCL forms an entire sea of LCL, deep enough for a UN frigate to patrol in and deep enough that it comes up to the waist of an Evangelion.
Notes
- In real life, the Central Dogma of molecular biology deals with the transfer of DNA information within a cell: DNA is transcribed into RNA, which is in turn translated by ribosomes into amino acid sequences that construct proteins, which are the main constituent of living cells. Put more simply, "DNA to RNA to Proteins". External link.
- "Nerv" is named after the German word "nerve", following the scheme that Nerv's predecessor organization "Gehirn" is named after the German word for "brain", and Seele after the German word for "soul". The proper pronunciation is something along the lines of "nairf", and it is phonetically approximated into Japanese as nerufu. The casts of the English dubs by ADV Films and Manga Entertainment do not provide as accurate a rendition: they simply say "nerv" exactly like the English word "nerve".
- "Nerv" is often spelled using all-capital letters in the series, however it is apparently not an acronym. Further, it is not spelled with all-capital letters on the "Welcome to Nerv" pamphlet that Shinji is given in Episode 01. "NERV" is just how the word is often romanized by the Japanese production team: other words like "Adam" or "Second Impact" are spelled as "ADAM" or "SECOND IMPACT" at times in the series. This is merely a quirk of translation.
- Nerv's formal title is "Special Duty Organization Nerv", in its capacity as technically a subdivision of the United Nations. However, in practice, it is a totally independent organization which the UN is subserviant to, so this title is rarely used.
