Magi
The Magi are a system of supercomputers designed by Dr. Naoko Akagi for GEHIRN. The Magi are based around a personality-imprint technology which Naoko developed, allowing her to imprint the three aspects of her personality onto them. The three Magi in Tokyo-3, personally installed by Naoko, are named after the three wise men of the East which visited the infant Jesus according to the Gospel. The three Magi in Tokyo-3 are:
- Melchior – Dr. Naoko Akagi as a scientist;
- Balthasar – Dr. Naoko Akagi as a mother;
- Casper – Dr. Naoko Akagi as a woman.
The three Magi are used to control NERV HQ and effectively "govern" Tokyo-3.
These original three Magi (Magi 01) are located in the Central Dogma level of NERV HQ. However, other global branches have their own sets of Magi supercomputers (each a trio of Magi), located in:
- Magi 02: Matsushiro, Japan (part of the city of Nagano)
- Magi 03: Berlin, Germany
- Magi 04: Massachusetts, USA
- Magi 05: Hamburg, Germany
- Magi 06: Beijing, China
The Magi are the target of the Angel Ireul's attack in Episode 12. In The End of Evangelion, Seele uses the five other sets of Magi located across the globe in a cyber-attack on Tokyo-3's Magi system, in the hopes of taking over the city without a fight. However, Ritsuko Akagi was able to erect a firewall in time to stop them, forcing Seele to order the JSSDF to mount a direct attack on the city.
Notes
- As Fuyutsuki points out, the 3 Magi computers are named after the "Three Wise Men of the East" from the story of Jesus Christ's birth in the Bible.
- "Magi" is often written in all capital letters in the series, however it is apparently not an acronym. As with "Nerv", spelling it in all capitals was just a quirk of translation by the Japanese production team.
