Evangelion: Death is a 70 minute long recap of the first 24 episodes of the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV Series, directed by Masayuki, in the format of a string quartet, each focusing on one of four characters: Shinji, Asuka, Rei, and Kaworu. At the time of its release in theatres with Rebirth on March 15th, 1997, it featured extra footage that had never been seen that was later released as extra footage for episodes 21'-24'. There was a second version personally edited by Masayuki that aired, without Rebirth, after the release of episodes 21'-24' that had approximately 4 minutes of the extra footage removed (primarily comprising some, but not all, of the material added in 22'); this was called Death(true), aired January 2nd, 1998, on WoWoW (Japanese Satellite TV). Later, a second edit was made called Death(true)2 which was part of the final release of the movies in Revival of Evangelion, a theatrical re-release of the movies on March 7th, 1998.
When Death and Rebirth was first released on home video in 1998, it used Death(true)2 in lieu of the original version; this was the only version available on home video until 2015, when the preceding two versions were released - the theatrical edition in the Neon Genesis Evangelion Blu-ray Box and Death(true) in the Archives of Evangelion box set.
