MISATO:“A forced Eva salvage?”

UrsusArctos: The silhouettes, the play between light and shadow, and somewhat surreal appearance of Cuts 182-198 are the influence of Akio Jissoji, who used very similar shots in the Ultraman episodes he directed.

dzzthink: Indeed, Ritsuko is quite literally putting Misato in the dark.

RITSUKO:“It's the only possibility that might work.”

RITSUKO:“We would drop all 992 existing N2 mines into its center, while simultaneously activating the AT Fields of the remaining Evas, disrupting the Angel's imaginary circuit for one millisecond. In that instant, we'll concentrate all the explosive energy, and destroy the Angel along with the Sea of Dirac that forms it.”

MISATO (OFF):“But with that, the body of the Eva... There's no telling what would happen to Shinji. That can't be called a rescue operation!”

RITSUKO (OFF):“This operation's top priority is to recover Unit 01 itself. Heavy damage to the body is irrelevant.”

Mbryo: That's a LOT of N2 mines. Wouldn't that be enough to obliterate the entire city? Even just one N2 bomb rivals a nuke in explosive power. The Rebuild mentions that trying to break through the 6th Angel's A.T. Field by dropping N2 aerial bombs on it would require so many bombs that it would destroy the NERV HQ in the process, and I imagine something similar would have happened if they had gone forth with this 'operation'.

Mr. Tines: NERV must be running on a shoestring staff at the commissioned officer level for the words "relieved of responsibility" and "reduced to the ranks" not to appear after this.

UrsusArctos: It won't be the last time Misato slaps Ritsuko and gets away with it! Judging by the fact that Misato was even offered her position (as opposed to someone older and with substantially greater military experience), it seems like Nerv recruits like a cult rather than a proper organization for their commissioned officers.

RITSUKO:“If Shinji's lost, it's your fault. Don't forget that!”

UrsusArctos: This episode went from Ritsuko's friendly ribbing of Misato to genuine hostility between the two of them. The slap marks the end of their friendship, although it doesn't truly hit its nadir until Episode 23. Truly, it isn't just Shinji's psyche that is subject to stark extremes here.
