Adam is the first Angel, from which all of the subsequent 16 Angels were born.

Adam is a Seed of Life, created by the First Ancestral Race billions of years ago. She remained inactive in the "White Moon" beneath Antarctica, until the Katsuragi Expedition forcibly woke Adam, resulting in Second Impact.

Adam was reduced to an embryonic state as a result, and was later recovered by SEELE for use by GEHIRN and later NERV. GEHIRN proceeded to create the Evangelion Units (all except Evangelion Unit-01 by creating clones of Adam from her genetic material, then inserting numerous cybernetic components into the Evas to allow humans to control them.

The embryonic Adam was clandestinely obtained by Ryougi Kaji and delivered to Gendo Ikari in Tokyo-3. Gendo then secretly grafted Adam onto his own right hand. During Third Impact, Gendo forces his hand into Rei III, merging Adam with her. However, she rejected Gendo, and Rei/Adam proceeded to merge with Lilith in Terminal Dogma. The gestalt Rei/Adam/Lilith creature then initiated Third Impact and Instrumentality. However, Shinji Ikari ultimately chose to reject instrumentality, and Eva Unit 01 burst from the being's eye and broke the Lance of Longinus in two. The Rei/Adam/Lilith being then fell to pieces and died.
