001

CONTROL (OFF):“This is Ekta 64 calling Neopan 400, confirm cumulonimbus clouds in your”

UrsusArctos: The Air Traffic Control dialogue is actually in English, hence the hard Japanese subtitles at the bottom of the screen. I believe that's the voice of Michael House, who did Gainax's in-house translation. Reportedly, House and his English-speaking friends George A. Arriola and Hiromi Arriola provided the English dialogue heard in the episode, both in the ATC conversations and during Eva-03's startup.

002

CONTROL (OFF):“immediate flight path, over.”

PILOT (OFF):“This is Neopan 400, cumulonimbus clouds confirmed.”

UrsusArctos: Like I said in the previous episode, I don't get why didn't they fit Eva-03 with its back to the fuselage like any other Eva? Dangling it from a cross under the plane is a sure way to increase drag. And how does the plane bring its landing gear down with that honking big cross in the way? Ridiculous.

003

PILOT (OFF):“Barometer indicates no hazard. Will maintain course,”

UrsusArctos: It should've been "Doppler radar indicates no hazard", because that's what they use to detect the localized, immensely powerful downdrafts called microbursts. A barometer simply measures air pressure around the plane. Anyway, what they're doing is perfectly logical. Nitpicks aside, Eva-03 looks really ominous even by Evangelion standards.

004

PILOT (OFF):“expect to arrive on schedule.”

CONTROL (OFF):“This is Ekta 64, roger and out.”

UrsusArctos: The lightning flash is the sole visual indication that something perverse (Bardiel) was lurking in the cloud the whole time. It turns the otherwise logical decision to fly through the cloud rather than simply divert around it into a lethal mistake.

005

006

007

SHINJI:“Where's Asuka?”

008

MISATO:“She's already left. It would seem that she's determined not to see me.”

SHINJI:“Why?”

MISATO:“Shinji, I guess you're still too young to understand a woman's feelings.”

SHINJI & MISATO:“Well... By the way...”

MISATO:“Go ahead.”

UrsusArctos: Maybe you should help him understand a woman's feelings, Misato, and come out with what's bothering you? Pen-Pen, relegated to a corner of the screen, seems less than happy with the whole situation.

Mr. Tines: Shinji shies away from Misato's attempts to reveal a woman's feeling a few episodes from now.

009

SHINJI:“Is the rumor that Unit 04 went missing true? I heard that there was some kind”

010

SHINJI (OFF):“of accident, and it exploded.”

MISATO:“Yes, it's true. Unit 04 vanished, along with the Second Branch of Nerv. It happened while they were testing the S2 engine.”

011

MISATO (OFF):“But don't worry, we'll be all right here. All three of our Evas are functioning properly. And we have a crack team of pilots and staff.”

SHINJI:“But I heard that Unit 03 is being brought here from America.”

012

SHINJI (OFF):“You're performing the activation tests at Matsushiro, aren't you?”

MISATO (OFF):“I'll be out for four days or so, but Kaji will be taking care of you two, so don't worry.”

SHINJI (OFF):“But what about the test?”

013

MISATO (OFF):“Ritsuko will be there as well, after all. There won't be any problems.”

SHINJI (OFF):“But what about the pilot?”

014A

014B

MISATO:“Well, about the pilot...”

015

SHINJI:“Yes?”

016

KENSUKE:“Good morning! I've come today with a request, Major Katsuragi!”

UrsusArctos: Of all the times to pick, Kensuke, you had to pick this moment?

017

KENSUKE:“Please!”

Luigi shinji: This has probably been pointed out by a lot of people already but I just recently realized that Kensuke is the closest representation of the viewers. He wants to be a pilot because he is a fan of the Evas and he wants to be a part of the team of our favorite characters just like the fans of the show would want to.

UrsusArctos: Except that Kensuke has already been inside Eva-01 in Episode 03 and saw how traumatic it was for Shinji to fight Shamshel. It's like he forgot how awful it could be - in stark contrast to Toji, who clearly isn't joyous at the thought of being made the pilot of Eva-03.

018

KENSUKE:“Make me the pilot for Evangelion Unit 03!”

Frogatr: This episode has a lot of inconsistency with Kensuke's freckles...

019

UrsusArctos: The handful of comedic scenes/facial expressions in this episode do nothing to soften what happens later, and give a false sense of levity to what is about to become an immensely dark episode.

Title1

SUBTITLE:“Episode #18 Selection of Life”

UrsusArctos: "Selection" is rendered here as 選択 (pronounced as sentaku) which is the common Japanese term used for a choice or selection. "Life" is rendered as 命 (inochi), which is used in other meanings rather than just life: "destiny, command, decree of a ruler" or in odd contexts "lord, prince". It is in fact a common element in the Japanese word for "an order",命令 (meirei) which we hear when Gendo and Misato talk about giving orders. The title could be a pun on "selection of destiny/a decree" both of which fit the decree that ends the fate of Eva-03 later in the episode.

020

RITSUKO (OFF):“So, Shinji doesn't know yet?”

021

MISATO:“Finding the right time to tell him... I'm scared. Sometimes I just can't tell what the heck he's thinking.”

Dr. Nick: Uh, who's driving?

022

RITSUKO:“Pull yourself together. You're the one who volunteered to be his guardian.”

023

MISATO:“I know, but...”

024

MISATO (OFF):“So when are you calling in the pilot?”

RITSUKO (OFF):“I think that'll be tomorrow. There are a lot of things to prep, after all.”

025

MISATO:“He might tell Shinji himself.”

026

RITSUKO:“I don't think so.”

027

RITSUKO (OFF):“He wasn't enthused enough to be bragging about it.”

UrsusArctos: Unlike Kensuke, he hasn't backslid from his sole experience in Eva-01's cockpit, and the injuries caused to his sister by Eva-01's berserk rampage are always on his mind.

028

RITSUKO (OFF):“Getting his sister transferred to our hospital here at Headquarters was the one condition he gave.”

Dr. Nick: I'm sure the Nerv HQ has state of the art hospital facilities, but hasn't Toji realized the Angels seem to be homing in on the place? He's just putting the poor girl in more danger.
