Hidenori Matsubara (松原 秀典, Matsubara Hidenori?, born on 15 November 1965) is a male Japanese anime character designer and director. Matsubara is heavily involved with art and design for the Rebuild films, and is credited as animation director for all four. While he has only worked on two episodes for the NGE anime (as well as previous Anno works Nadia and Gunbuster,[1] after Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's gradual distancing from the franchise after Evangelion 2.0 in 2009, he gradually replaced him as Evangelion's primary character designer, with Sadamoto himself being credited only as "Original Character Design". He is, alongside co-directors Kazuya Tsurumaki and Mahiro Maeda, credited as author for the Evangelion 3.0 (-120 min.) manga and OVA.
