Although the manga does not retell the battle scene of Gaghiel and Eva-02, it does give a brief outline of the battle. Following the anime series, the Angel Gaghiel was destroyed by using two Iowa-class battleships Illinois (BB-65) and Kentucky (BB-66) and firing their 16 in 50 cal. Mark 7 guns into the Angel's mouth, thus destroying the Angel (due to the Angel's core being located inside the mouth). Meanwhile, the new arrival at both Nerv and Tokyo-3 is Asuka Langley Soryu. A bad tempered, cheery person introduces herself at Shinji's school and presumably flirts/teases Shinji. Shortly afterwards, a new Angel appears on the Kii peninsula, and both Asuka and Shinji are ordered to eliminate the target. Asuka, desperately wanting to show off her new skills, charges forward and slices the Angel in half, with Shinji both shocked and surprised. Until, that is, the Angel revives itself by forming 2 separate, Angels. With Asuka annoyed, she continues to amputate or try to damage the Angel, but to no avail. The Angel simply "heals" itself by utilizing their 2 cores for instant regeneration. With both pilots stunned, the Angels quickly disabled the Evas by throwing them with their razor-sharp claws, ultimately humiliating Nerv and transferring control to the UN Military, temporarily stunning the Angels with an N2 Mine. Misato is threatened to be fired from Nerv if such a humiliating event took place again. She is warned that if it wasn't for Fuyutsuki's calm manner, Misato would've been fired on the spot. Meanwhile, Kaji gives Misato a tape, with some classical music on it. She soon realises that it was the perfect song for the attack on Israfel.

Stage 20: Asuka Comes To Japan (アスカ、来日 / Asuka, Rainichi)
 +
Shinji and Rei watch a giant screen where Asuka defeats Gaghiel with Eva-02 at sea with assistance from The Pacific Fleet. Later, Toji, Kensuke, and Shinji start heading home from school when they run into Asuka at the arcade. Not knowing who she is, the three are amazed over how beautiful she is until she freaks out and demands money from them. While arguing, Asuka bumps a big thuggish guy who wants to beat her up for making him lose his game. Asuka proceeds to beat him up and all of his friends. Shinji manages to get punched in the scuffle. The arcade owner calls the cops and everyone runs away. On Shinji's way to Nerv he runs into Asuka at the gates.

By syncing the two pilots, Nerv would be able to destroy the Angels by combining both attacks on the two Angels. Getting Asuka and Shinji to sync with each other, however, was another story. Asuka and Shinji are both stunned, and instantly refuse to go with Shinji. Eventually, and reluctantly, both Children agree to sync with each other. This would include sleeping, breathing , eating etc with each other. They have only less than 2 weeks to prepare and finalize their attacks, however, on the last day of training, both Asuka and Shinji train furiously, and practice even the night before the battle. Israfel regenerated quicker than the Magi predicted, and so Misato had to force the two pilots into their Entry Plugs. However, once in, they seemingly had full confidence, and were awake instantly. This change of mood stunned Misato for awhile, and both pilots suddenly started the mission too quick. With the music on, both Asuka and Shinji performed flawlessly, ending with the Angel's destruction of a huge explosion, creating an enormous crater, in which both Evas were in the middle of the explosion. With this, both Evas lay tangled between each other, because Shinji and Asuka were tired due to training the whole night before.

Stage 21: The Uninvited (招かれざる者 / Manekarezarumono)
 +
Shinji and Asuka learn that each other are pilots. Asuka is introduced by Misato and Ritsuko where Asuka apologizes for Shinji getting punched. She lies and says that Shinji was protecting her. In Gendo's office, Kaji presents Gendo with the 'first human', Adam. All the children and Misato are having lunch when Kaji walks in and introduces himself. Misato, appalled by seeing him, yells at him to go away. Back at school, Asuka shows up for class and everyone starts to gossip about her. Shinji drops his pencil and Asuka returns it with a piece of chewed gum stuck to it. After school, Asuka reveals the real truth about Second Impact to Shinji while walking to Nerv. Rei walks by and blows off Asuka. Asuka is annoyed by this and grabs Rei's shoulder. Shinji defends Rei, and Asuka gets mad and runs away.

Kaji reintroduces himself to Ritsuko. Misato is still disgusted with him. The alarm goes off signaling the arrival of another Angel. Tokyo-3's Angel Intercept System is still down so the Evas must meet the Angel at the ocean's edge. Asuka criticizes Shinji and tells him not to get in her way. After the briefing, Asuka yells at Shinji for screwing up the battle when Kaji walks in. Asuka then claims Shinji was picking on her. Kaji invites both of them to dinner. Misato discovers all the paper work she has to deal with because of the lost battle. She says the Evas need 5 days for repair but the Angel will also take 5 days to heal. Ritsuko gives a plan to defeat the Angel from Kaji to Misato. At dinner with Kaji, Asuka and Shinji are called to report to the Second Conference room where Misato directs them to their new living quarters. They are disgusted to have to live together.
