Question in terms of time zones and trying to be on here when everyone else is; are you in Taiwan right now, or what time zone are you in?--V 15:25, 17 August 2007 (EDT)

I am currently in NYC, but I live in Pittsburgh, so EST. I keep pretty odd hours so there's no set schedule of when I'm awake or sleeping. --Ornette 15:27, 17 August 2007 (EDT)

Great work on the Cast & Crew articles. Remember that the subject of an article when first mentioned should be bolded, i.e. in the "Hideaki Anno" article, the first time his name is mentioned at the start of the article it is written "Hideaki Anno", (or "Core" or "Shinji Ikari" would also be bolded, etc.). --V 17:21, 20 August 2007 (EDT)

Need to save this bit of Re-Take from the translator:
(04:34:32) Spore: Well, the little Asuka we see first is a spirit who has what may be interpreted as divine powers. She exists as the result of a possible future, where Asuka and Shinji got married and had a kid.
(04:35:25) Spore: The other little Asuka we see at the end of after IS that possible future. :P
(04:36:19) Spore: Hence the miracle referenced at the end, meaning the incredibly minute chance that such a thing (a child being born of two people happening to have the same appearance as one born in an alternate future) occuring.
(04:36:39) Spore: Got it? :P
(04:36:43) jonlin: lol

Do you know much about redirects? Do redirects necessarily slow down the entire site? --UrsusArctos 23:08, 10 February 2008 (PST)

Doesn't really slow down the site, it's the same as loading 2 pages instead of one. You load one page, and the webserver says to go to another page, then the browser loads the second page. The only difference is the first page you load has no content, while the second one does (hopefully) so there is more data transferred on the second connection --Ornette 23:13, 10 February 2008 (PST)
I asked because on one occasion, I used Eva-01 as a redirect page to Evangelion Unit-01, but V changed Eva-01 to Eva-01 and said that redirects slowed it down. Since Eva-01 is just an empty redirect page, there shouldn't be a problem, right? (You need to see the link code to know what I'm meaning).--UrsusArctos 23:20, 10 February 2008 (PST)
It's not so much a matter of slowing it down as just a matter of cleanliness, sorry if I confused: Being able to type "Eva-01" is a great and valuable tool: it allows us to directly link to the proper page title, avoiding redirects entirely, but at the same time, we don't have to cumbersomely write out "Asuka Langley Soryu" each and every time, we could just say "Asuka" instead. Just making a link "Eva-01" isn't a problem. Periodically we have to make maintenance sweeps in which we change all instances of just "Eva-01" to "Eva-01". This is really a trivial editing thing and nothing to worry about; it's grunt-work I'll get to cleaning up. What you did that I corrected before Ursus, as to write "Evangelion Unit-01" which kind of defeated the entire purpose of making that "|" redirect; you could have just written "Evangelion Unit-01" as it is both what you wanted to display as well as to link to directly. This isn't really that important it's just a maintenance thing for dealing with clutter. --V 07:19, 11 February 2008 (PST)
Well anyways, I was wrong, didn't know that Ursus was talking about mediawiki redirects, which when hit, returns the content of the redirect without any extra connection. It displays ALL the content, title included. The only difference is the URL. I can understand the need to use "|" in the mediawiki linking, but I assumed stuff like that was because there is an official name for something "Evangelion Unit-01" and a shorthand name "Eva-01". --Ornette 07:41, 11 February 2008 (PST)
Okay, I understand now. Thanks for the explanation, guys.--UrsusArctos 17:04, 11 February 2008 (PST)

User log

Thanks for the edit. I was perplexed that I couldn't create my user page, but didn't care enough to go digging and asking around about it. ----Gwern (contribs) 20:50 6 February 2011 (GMT) 20:50, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

I've been watching your edits, and I don't really understand. What's the point of copying stuff from my notes into another page? --Gwern (contribs) 15:12 4 April 2011 (GMT) 15:12, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

I can put a link to your page in that statements page. I wasn't sure what the status of that page was (your old haskell link stopped working), and I had been going through them looking for relevant quotes for the statements page. The statements page is more of just a dumping ground for now, someone's going to need to go through a remove the non-relevant stuff and add headings for the subsections for linking from within the wiki that has those quotes, instead of sourcing from different places. Or completely unsourcing statements that are just enclosed in " ". --Ornette 19:16, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
The status is, hopefully, permanent; I may rename/move it in the future, but I recently learned how to use .htaccess, so the old link will continue to work. As far as availability goes, it should be in the Internet Archive in a few months, and I believe WebCite has a few copies. Likewise, if one wants, it's easy to download `gwern.net` and its full revision history, including otaku.page. (I complain about dead links so much that it'd be a little hypocritical if I didn't make sure my own pages were cached elsewhere & my content mirror-able.)
My Haskell link broke because I wanted to stop abusing their free hosting and get some real hosting. At the time, I thought I had updated most of the links and I didn't know how to use .htaccess; I could remedy that if you know of important broken links. --Gwern (contribs) 22:28 4 April 2011 (GMT) 22:28, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
