Sore o Nasumono is a collection of concept art by Ikuto Yamashita and Seiji Kio, published in 1998. It contains conceptual designs of the Evangelions, the Command Center, the Geofront, Tokyo-3, among others, including some non-production illustrations.
An unused TV series ending and movie scenario by Yamashita are also included.

It might be surprising given what ultimately resulted, but during the initial development of the Anime series, Supervisor Anno took on something of a passive role, and staff would regularly bounce ideas off of him in order to flesh out the story. As time passed, and I was put in charge, I received an early scenario manuscript by fax. When I went to return the fax, I jotted down some left over ideas just off the top of my head. I still get a good laugh out of it to this day.

Shin Seiki Evangelion Original Film Novel
"The Long-Awaited People."
[Translator's Notes: "Gekijouban shousetsu," meaning the book based on the movie that was never made.]
During the development of the film, Yamashita, being asked to submit ideas, thought of an original story he'd conceived mid-way through the television show. Created in collaboration with Kio [omitted]*, the utterly ridiculous work was eventually presented to Supervisor Anno. Intended to be a direct sequel, it includes the content and all-star cast of the EVA television show.
[*Translator's Notes: As I know it, "氏宅" is a placeholder for someone who doesn't want to give their name, usually their surname. Like "Takashi S氏宅." ]
The last Angel has been defeated. Having just confronted the Angel threat, humanity began to wield EVA against EVA. As this abuse of EVA technology continued, an enormous conflict erupted. This is the era in which our story begins.

During this conflict, NERV General Headquarters' Special Forces Division, along with EVA 01, attacked NERV's Euro-Germany Branch. Having confirmed the existence of "that," EVA 01 expanded its AT-Field, and NERV completely destroyed the facility with a neutron bomb. The "that" they were looking for was the Sinking-Type Equipment Universal Invasion Gun (Field Sinker), code-named the "Spine of the Death God." This new type of corrosive AT-Field worked by ways of a guaranteed-to-hit heavy particle bullet, which, when used against enemies with current AT-Field capacity, would almost always find its target with terrible speed. At the same time as construction of this secret weapon was underway, the Euro-Germany Branch used their political will to secure the return of their creation, EVA 02. In a single move, NERV Germany hid EVA 02 and the "Spine of the Death God" in accordance with their master plan. Before their troublesome dealings could be discovered by the international community, they were ultimately stopped by the NERV organization proper. Although NERV's Euro-Germany Branch has since been dismantled, as well as their brilliant achievement, EVA 02, this incident would serve as a catalyst, forever linking EVA technology to global military strategy. However, this turmoil would serve only as a small part of a greater disaster.
How will these mysteries come to light?
Will they gather the technological strength they need?
Now, all is but a mystery...
However, those humanoid mechs have been built.
Humanity's creations.
But those creations are EVA.
Thus far, EVA has proven to be distinctly different, continually defying current technology. Ever since the very beginnings of civilization, a powerful mental contamination had begun. Humanity had always been set in a certain direction......

A contamination not unlike brainwashing gradually drove into each and every person. At first it infected the staff involved in the creation of the humanoid mechs. Soon followed the organization, the city, and finally the entire country. All began to move with a single purpose: they were commanded to build an EVA in their own image.
"Fortune."
Does this name refer to its power? To the country that created it? Does it have any meaning at all? For the country that constructed Fortune was itself burnt to the ground... And it was from that day on that a worldwide mental contamination began.
Beasts in the shape of men run throughout a ruined city. They do not speak. They do not use tools. They run on all fours. They communicate only with powerful gazes in order to protect their territory and the prosperity of their brood. They are wolf-men. When this mental contamination first infected normal humans, they lived what could be described as a life of culture. But eventually this mental contamination became an organic one, and in a short period of time, their bodies transformed into something like the werewolves of fairy-tales. And this abnormality is not confined to a single city. Now, throughout the world, this destructive form is common among human beings. Boasting this world-wide influence, the composition of humanity has changed drastically. Human beings, as intellectual life-forms, is left with only a whisper of the remaining populous, with the amount of destruction only accelerating. Those still remaining live in constant fear of this previously unseen, and unusual, contamination. Within a ruined city, standing erect atop the rubble of the city's countless buildings, the wolf-men look to the sky. Together they face the moon and howl.
The view from the monitor shows a structure in the shape of a pyramid. Flames surround the outlying ruins of this perfect geometric structure, glistening horribly as it suppresses the invading wolf-men. That pyramid is NERV's Central Experimental City. It is no exaggeration to say that it has truly become humanity's final fortress. In this city, they wield meager Jamming Technology to bear the onslaught. Namely, they've been able to disrupt the mental contamination waves, while maintaining the facility's structural integrity, through use of interference wave oscillation. Because of this, those within the walls are protected from the mental contamination waves pouring down on nearly the rest of the entire world. The technology itself was originally used in EVA's Experimental Phase of construction, used to protect against mental disaster (Psychological Hazard). In a word, the use of this technology has spared these lucky people from total mental contamination. In the center of the facility, in a bored out hole mirroring the shape of a mortar, EVA 01 stands ready. An Electrical Phase Contact Unit resembling feathers or a tail has been installed onto EVA 01's back, allowing her to operate on her own volition, without needing a pilot. This Reflector Hole, as it's now called, was once used as an orbital observation system receiver, but has since been converted into an EVA "private room." As if listening out for something, EVA 01 watches the starry sky above.
In a roof-top corridor outside the facility, Hyuga and Aoba looked to EVA curiously. "She looks like some kind of a poet or philosopher, doesn't she?" Aoba said.
"She certainly looks like she's thinking about something," agreed Hyuga. "When EVA goes off to battle, before the pilot unleashes her rage, EVA 01 seems so calm and intellectual... Like she's trying to compose an understanding of something she can't completely grasp, but still knowing more than just a small notion. Who knows what she's thinking."

"I don't know either..." Aoba said, lowering his gaze as he looked outside the facility. Beyond the line of fire, in the center of a rubble-covered road, Aoba caught a glimpse of the distant shadows of the wolf-men. "But I think those guys outside think about even less. Still, don't they seem to be getting a little more... sophisticated? Or... something like that. I actually think it's somewhat incredible." Aoba turned to Hyuga. "I know that must sound weird, huh?"
"You're not alone. People are just afraid to say it," Hyuga said, looking, too, at the wolf-men gathered on the road. "They suddenly attack the very thing we're supposed to protect. In truth, there are only a few people in this entire facility. This equipment prevents us from going outside, not to mention we only have our emergency stores to live on... Still, we've managed to keep on fighting one way or another, even though we're up against an enemy we still don't fully understand." He took a deep breath. "The people of this city try to act normal, but they're troubled. They can't help but depend on wishful thinking. They're looking through EVA's eyes to the future." Unknown if she was truly thinking or not, EVA continued to stand alone in deep meditation.
Every engineer in the facility had piled into the Plug Regulation Room, investigating something in 01's Entry Plug. Using a fiber scope--something resembling a gastrocamera--they looked over an exposed circuit board. Two engineers in the plug's interior enlarged the camera's view with a computer display.
"Hold on!" Engineer A yelled. "Go back a little! Hey, wait, what is that...?"
"There's no doubt about it!" Engineer B said. He turned to address the others. "Quickly! Bring Dr. Akagi over here!"
They saw through the Neuro-Computer Zoom Matrix that a single large synapse had wrapped itself around a nerve cord.
"There must be a leak on the side of the Basic Order Line's cut-feedback," Ritsuko announced. "Is it true that EVA did this itself? What is the possibility that it was re-written by a third party?"
"There's no evidence of anti-body program or structural defense failure," Engineer A said. "Of course, in theory, it is possible to trick the anti-body program all together. Still, irregular fluctuations have been recorded. We can only assume that EVA's own consciousness might have re-written the information. The irregularity was recorded roughly one month ago... That would put it during EVA 01's deep stage accident..."
Ritsuko, without using the fiber scope, had crawled into the narrow cylinder and over the seat of the plug. Pointing a small lighted loupe, she quickly located the problem. She lightly furrowed her brow just as the engineer finished speaking.
He continued: "I can't explain why, but that incident seems to be the cause of this."
"There seems to be no question about it..." Ritsuko said. Climbing her way out of the plug, Ritsuko lost her grip and began to slide down. Without a moments delay, an engineer grabbed her hand and pulled her back up. "Thank you..." she said. "We need to know what kinds of effects this circuit-change will have on the pilot during operation." She dropped down to the main floor and looked over her team of engineers. "Are there any suggestions?"
They all wore grave expressions. Engineer C said flatly, "There shouldn't be any effect."
In a previous battle
A nude image of shinji yelled out boldly, letting loose a tremendous punch. Moving in concert, EVA doubled his actions. Shinji had become the EVA itself. This is what is called the Deep Stage. The punch struck a tank-like robot, but its shield and EVA's AT-Field collided, nulling any contact.
"01 to Control!" Shinji shouted. "This guy's harder than I thought!" Shinji's voice echoed inside the Entry Plug, but he hadn't spoken aloud. A visor over his eyes flickered strange patterns of light, while his body radiated a soft, glowing light as he laid back in the plug's seat as if in a deep sleep.
"I'm authorizing use of the Monoatomic Ribbon," Misato ordered.
"What about back-up from 00?!" Shinji said. "Is Ayanami in battle position yet?!"
Engineer C's voice was getting smaller and smaller as he spoke. "Normal synchronization or not, using Super Synchronize during Deep Stage will cause the pilot's consciousness to be completely transferred to EVA," he said. "The pilot will begin to think that he, himself, is EVA."
"However," Engineer A said, "while his consciousness is absent, his body will cease to function. Until the pilot's mind returns, EVA will be in control of his body."
"In that scenario," Engineer B said, "EVA's brain is no longer being controlled by the host computer, nor is Shinji in control of his body. Put simply, EVA and the pilot will have exchanged both their minds and bodies. Operating with the Basic Order Line cut, and without receiving commands from the body control program, we believe EVA's consciousness will flood rapidly into the pilot's body."
"No, that's not possible," Engineer D said. "Recordings from prior experiments have shown that the pilot will most certainly die from ego collapse. The structure of EVA's mind is completely different from a human's. If EVA's mind enters Shinji and he is unable to control it, he will cease to be!"
Asuka stood on the gate outside the facility. Those inside the fortress didn't know she was there. In this world where EVA and their pilots are increasingly in a position of great importance, Asuka was nonetheless labeled a traitor, despite being unaware of the political strategizing of NERV Germany.

Relieved to be free of suspicious eyes, standing alone outside while wearing heavy interference equipment was better than being thought a criminal. Watching the dizzying flames, she noticed the shadow of a person emerge from an underground gate.
But wait. He wasn't wearing any interference equipment.
An unexpectedly bold-faced Shinji, completely unaware that Asuka was behind him, walked to the raised bridge behind the barricade of fire. Walking faster and faster, he was eventually sprinting at such an accelerated rate that it was hard to make him out. What Asuka saw next was even more startling. Shinji kicked off violently from the bridge's foundation, leaping through the air and beyond the wall of fire, disappearing in an instant.
The city of rubble
Asuka had lost sight of Shinji. Moments later, Asuka's mind was racing with fear and regret, completely obsessed with Shinji's unusual behavior. And not to mention he had set foot in the wolf-men's city under moon-light. NERV had weapons, but going out there alone was madness. Fearful of the wolf-men's howls, Asuka nonetheless searched for Shinji with her eyes. Then, several wolf-men children cut in front of her view and Asuka followed them as well. The children had sensed her fear and began to search for Shinji by looking for his clothing. After spotting him coming out from a narrow passage and leaping to the very top of a building, Asuka thought she had stopped breathing. There glowing in the moonlight was Shinji. From where she was standing, Asuka saw the countless wolf-men turn to him and bow.

Together they began howling to him, smiling as Shinji ran over to them playfully. Rather than being afraid, Asuka was taken aback by the almost bizarre beauty of the scene. Suddenly, Shinji shot a calm and beckoning gaze to her as tears fell from his eyes. That gentle expression seemed to come not from the person in front of her, but from someone else entirely. Their everlasting bond seemed gone...
Inside the NERV facility, walking out of the cage leading to the Reflector Hole, Ritsuko, leading the team of engineers, disregarded the protests from the maintenance personnel.
"Please wait! 01 is only at Level B cool-down!"
As the gate to the Hole opened, Ritsuko turned to EVA 01. "Shinji-kun! Is he inside EVA right now?!"
The maintenance personnel were shocked. Everyone looked to 01. EVA gave no indication. And the moon, too, told the gazing wolf-men nothing.
They had gathered atop the ruined building, and each looked to the moon and whined. Illuminated under the moonlight, Shinji stood in the center of the wolf-men. Asuka reluctantly began to run away from where she was. Shinji quickly understood that her pride wouldn't allow her see anymore. He wore an expression both bashful and puzzled, yet somewhat hopeful. He lifted his arms and pulled in the air as if to embrace her fleeing body. Asuka ran away from the surreal sight.
"I can't do that, Ritsuko-san!" Shinji yelled. "Wasn't that the mental correction before?!" In the medical room designed for the pilots, Shinji resisted the medical scanner. Aside from the medical staff, agents from the Security Agency were also present. "If the latest memories are interrupted, it may go wild!"
"Shinji-kun!" Ritsuko yelled.
Shinji froze, but it wasn't from Ritsuko's cutting voice. The security personnel had drawn their pistols, and were pointing them right at him.
Shinji ran into Ayanami in the hallway.
"Oh, Ayanami," he said.
Once she laid her eyes on Shinji, her body began to tremble and she looked terrified. When he touched her shoulder, she shrugged off his hand and ran quickly down the corridor.
Something's changing..., Shinji thought to himself.
It was a cloudy day. Misato was spearheading the External Area Investigation Department in an operation employing Unit 00 with Unit 01 functioning in an auxiliary role. The Investigation Members were collecting blood from a severed wolf-man arm.
"This district's no good," Investigation Member A said.
"When people become wolf-men, they forget how to prepare food and they'll eat anything they can get their hands on," Investigation Member B said. "They're prone to exposure from pollution and any hazardous materials out here."
"That settles it," said Misato. "Shinji-kun, Rei, burn everything beyond the river."
"Roger," Rei answered quickly.
"Wh-wait a second, Misato-san!" Shinji said. "Those people aren't enemies, they're still human!"
"I feel bad about it, too," said Misato. "But, Shinji-kun, we have to control this. If we leave it how it is now, other districts will be contaminated and more people will die."
"But--"
"I understand, Shinji-kun. To play God like this... I'm sure I'll go to hell for it. But we have to protect the people, no matter the cost... I hate it... If we don't succeed, we're only leading them to their doom."
Shinji's trembling hand was rattling the control stick.
The wolf-men watched EVA. As if with torch in hand, EVA burnt everything to the ground, like a fearsome God.
What are we protecting?, thought Shinji.
The wolf-men were trying to escape as flames began to purge the ruined city.
Is this city worth protecting? Can this destruction create something worth protecting...?

"彼方の待ち人"
作・山下いくと
劇場版制作にあたり、例によってアイデア提出を求められた山下が、テレビ版中盤あたりに思いついたオリジナルの話。きお氏宅で彼とともに、あーだこーだムダな話してつくったものを、庵野監督に見せることにしました。テレビ版EVA後日談というよりは、オールスターキャストショー的な内容にしています。
最終使徒は撃退された。
EVAをはさんで使徒と対峙していた人類は、そのとき初めてEVAそのものと向き合うことになる。
やがて始まったのはEVAに関する技術の乱用、そしてその争奪戦であった。
これはそんな時代を起点にして始まる話。

その日、ネルフ総括本部特殊部隊はEVA01とともにユーロドイツネルフ支局を急襲、゛それ゛を確認、ATフィールド展開の後、中性子爆弾使用によって施設を蒸し焼きにする。
それは、沈下型領界侵攻銃（フィールドシンカー）、コード゛死神の背骨〟。
新型の浸食性ATフィールドによって、レールがひかれたごとく、絶対の命中を保証された重粒子の弾体は、従来のATフィールドの反発力によってすさまじい速度を与えられて空間を滑り降り、目標に到達する。
極秘裏にこれを建造、同時に政治的手腕をもって当支部によって造られたEVA02を取り戻し、EVAさえ一撃で葬れるこの゛死神の背骨゛とEVA02 の２つをこれからの新たな世界ゲームのカードに加えようというドイツネルフのもくろみは、その裏国家間の駆け引きが露見する前に、ネルフという、一団体の中でのゴタゴタとして処理されてしまう。
ここにEVA０２建造という輝かしい業績を誇るネルフ・ユーロドイツ支部は解体されるのだが、この事件をきっかけに、世界は、EVA技術の有無がその国にとって今後の世界戦略の優秀につながることを重い知らされたのである。
しかしこの騒ぎも、これから起こる大災害の前では小さな事件として処理されることとなる。
どうやって機密をもちだしたのだろう

やがてその人型にかかわるスタッフは、施設は、都市は、国家は、ただひとつの目的のために動きだす。
隷従する人々に自らの身体を造らせるEVA。
″フォウチュン〟その名は自らの誇示か、それとも自らの存在に近い意味をもつのか、いまとなってはどこの国がフォウチュンを造ったのか、わからないし意味もない。
なぜなら、自らを造らせたその国をフォウチユンは焼きはらってしまったから……。
そしてその日からである、世界規模の精神汚染が始まったのは。
荒廃した都市の中を、人の形をした獣が駆けている。ことばを話さず、視線とその力のみでわずかにナワパリと種族繁栄のためにコミュニケートし、道具を使わず4本足で駆けている。
彼らは人狼(ヒトオオカミ)、精神汚染を受けるまではれっきとした人間で、我々が言うところの文化的な生活を送っていた人々のなれの果てだ。
精神的な汚染は、やがて器質的異常を引き起こして、短期間のうちに身体そのものが、まるでおとぎ話の狼人間(ワーウルフ)のように変化してしまっている。そしてこの異常はこの地区に限ったことではない。いまや地球上全体で、人間にのみ起こっている共通で、かつ破壊的な現状なのである。
地球上て最大の勢力を誇っているのは、あいかわらず人間という構図に変化はないが、知的生命体という意味での人類は、これから描く極めてわずかな人々を除いて事実上、絶滅したと考えるほうが早く、残った人々も、日々精神汚染の恐怖におびえ、まるで先の見えない、異常な精神下の生活を送っている。
自らより破壊した都市、ピルというピルの瓦礁のてっぺんに人狼たちが立っている。
一斉に月に向かって吠える人狼。
画面をパンしていくと、底辺が三角形のピラミッドをいくつも合わせたような建造物がある。この完全な幾何学形態の建物は、まわりの廃虚の中ではかえって異彩を放っており、炎をめぐらせて人狼の侵入を抑えている。
これが、ネルフ中央実験都市。こんどこそ掛値なし、言葉どおりのか″人類最後の砦〟となってしまった。この都市には、それを支えるささやかなジャミング技術がある。すなわち、建物全体の形状と精神汚染波を撹乱する干渉波発振。この2つによって、かろうじて地球全土に降りそそぐ精神汚染から施設内の人聞を守っているのだが、その技術自体はもともと施設内においてEVAの運用実験時の精神災害(サイコロジカル・ハザード)を想定してのものであり、早い話、ここに勤務していた運のいい人間だけが精神汚染を免れたわけである。
施設中央に、すり鉢状にえぐられた鏡張りの巨大なホールがあり、EVA01が立ちつくしている。
背中に取り付けられた羽か尻尾のような位相差発電ユニットにより、EVA01はパイロットも乗せずに自らの意志、でここにたたずんでおり、このリフレクターホールはかつては軌道上監視システムのレシーバーだったのが、いまではEVAのプライベートルームと化している。
何かを聞いているように星空を見上げているEVA01。
施設外壁上の屋上回廊から日向と青葉がEVAを見ている。
青葉「まるで詩人か哲学者ってところだな」
日向「何かを考えているつてのは本当らしいよ。
EVAは戦闘時に、パイロットが彼女の怒りのイメージに触れるまでは、極めて穏やかで知性的なんだ......。もっとも、思考の組み立て方がまるで違うのか、概念に差がありすぎるのか、何を考えているのかさっぱりわからないけどね」
青葉「ただ同じわからないにしても(青葉、体の向きを変えて、施設の外に視線を落とす。炎のラインの向こうの瓦礫の街の中、チラリチラリ人狼の陰が見え

る)、連中とはずいぶん違うと思うぜ。何かもっと、こう、途方もなく高度な……なんていうのかな、とにかく凄いことさ(日向のほうを見て)……なんて考えるのは変かな……」
日向「君だけじゃないよ。誰も口にしないだけでね。
（人狼の街を見て）俺たちは守るべきものをいきなり奪われてしまったんだ。まともなのはこの施設のわずかな人間だけ。装備がなくちゃ外にも出られないし、第一ここの備蓄だっていつまでもつことやら……。でも我々は何かと戦っているという、この災厄を招いた敵の正体すらまだつかめないでいるのにだ。(一息おいて)この街の人聞は正常であるがゆえに病んでいるんだ。だからなんでもいいから希望的なことを探さずにはいられない。EVAの視線の先にみんな未来を見ているよ」
まわりの思いを知ってか知らずか、瞑想するように立ちつくすEVA。
プラグ調整室。01のエントリープラグの中に何人ものエンジニアが潜り込み、何かを調べている。
胃カメラのようなファイバースコープで、プラグ内インテリアから引き出した回路基板の上をなぞっていく。
別の2人のインテリアがプラグ内に持ち込んだパソコンのディスプレーでその拡大図を見ているが、
エンジニアA「ちょっと待った!少し戻して！おい、いまの……」
エンジニアB「ああ、間違いない！(プラグの外へ向かって）赤木博士をここへ！」
ニューロコンピュータ基盤のズーム、ひとつの大きなシナプスを避けるようにして神経索、が絡みついている。
リツコ「ベーシックオーダーのラインをカットしてフィードバック側にリークしてあるのね。本当にEVA自身がやったといえる?第三者に書き換えられた可能性は？」
エンジニアA「どの型の抗体プログラムも防御形態をとった形跡はありません。むろんすべての抗体プログラムをだますことも理論上では可能ですが、それよりEVA本体より書き換えを自ら意識したと見られる変則的な揺らぎがレコーダーにありました。記録時刻は1か月前の.……例のEVA01ディープステージ中アクシデント時のもので……」
リツコはファイバースコープを使わずにプラグ内のシー卜とシリンダーの狭い空間に自ら潜り込み、小さなライト付きルーぺで問題箇所を見ていたが、最後のことばで少し眉を寄せる。
エンジニアA（続けて)「理由はわかりませんが、原因はあの事故にあるようです」
リツコ「疑う余地はないようね……問題は……」
プラグの外に出ようとして体をずらしてくるリツコ。すかさずエンジニアのひとりが予を差し出し、引っ張り出されるリツコ。
リツコ「ありがと……問題はこの回路変更でどんな影響がパイロットに出るかだけれど」
外のフロアに足を降ろすと同時にエンジニア一同を見渡して、

深刻な顔のエンジニアたち。
エンジニアC「影響、ところじゃないはずです」
過去の戦闘シーンのリフレーン。
裸の(イメージの)シンジがパンチを繰り出す。
シンジ「うおおッ！」
同じ動きをするEVAに像がダブってゆく、いまシンシはEVAそのものと化している。これがディープステージ。
戦車のようなロボットにパンチを入れるが、ATフィールドと相手のシールドが衝突して拳は届いていない。
シンジ「01よりコントロール！こいつ、思ったより固いよ！」
エントリープラグ内、シンジの声はしているがシンジはしゃべっていない。シートの上のシンジの自のあたりには、パイザーより不思議なパターンて明滅する光が投げかけられており、シンジ自身は薄日を開いて眠っているようにぐったりしている。
ミサト「単原子リボンの使用を許可します」
シンジ「00のバックアップは！？綾波はまだ作戦位置に着いてないの！？」
(声はだんだん小さくなってゆき、エンジニアCの声がかぶってくる)
エンジニアC「通常シンクロならともかく、スーパーシンクロナイザを使用してのディープステージでは、パイロットの意識は完全にEVAに移っています。パイロットは、まるでEVAになったように感じるでしよう」
エンジニアA「しかし、意識が留守になったパイロットの肉体はそのままでは死んでしまう。意識が戻るまでのパイロットの体はEVAが維持管理します」
エンジニアB「この場合、EVAの脳の一部をホストコンピュータ代わりにして利用しているわけであり、要は、パイロットとEVAがお互いの心と体を交換しているような状、況ですが、今回問題なのはベーシックオーダーラインを切られていた結果、命令されるはずの身体管理プログラムではなく、EVAの意識そのものがパイロットの肉体に流れ込んだことが想定されます」
エンジニアD「いや、それはありえないだろう。初期の実験記録を見てもその場合、パイロットは確実に自己崩壊からくる死を迎える。EVAの意識は構造が遠い過ぎて、万が一、シンジ君に流れ込んでいたなら受け止めきれず、彼は生きてはいないはずだ！」
施設の外、ゲー卜の上にアスカがいる。
アスカは砦の中には居場所がないのだ。この世界でさらに重要度を増したEVAのパイロットであるがゆえにポジションこそ変わらなかったものの、ドイツ、ネルフの一件以来、彼女自身はその政治的な策謀をまったく知らなかったにもかかわらず、あらゆる場面で裏

切り者のレッテルにつき当たることとなる。
アスカにとっては、犯罪者砂泳がせている刑事のよフな視線にいつもさらされているよりは、重い干渉装置を着けてでも外にいるほうが気が楽だった。
ボーッと炎を見つめていたアスカは、そのとき足元のゲー卜から出てきた人影に気付く。
彼は干渉装置を着けていなかった。
意外なほどにすがすがしい顔をしたシンジは後方頭上のアスカには気付かず、炎のバリケードのこちら側に引き上げられた橋に向かって歩いてゆく。その速度はだんだん増してゆき、しまいには速すまはしないかというようなスピードで疾走するシンジ。
次の瞬間、アスカはアッと驚く。
橋の基礎部分を蹴り飛ばして宙に踊ったシンジの体が、そのまま身を翻して炎の向こうに消えてしまったのだ。
瓦礁の都市。
アスカはシンジの後や追ってきたが見失ってしまう。しばらくするとアスカの頭の中は、後悔と恐怖でいっぱいになっていた。シンジの異常な行動に気をとられてうかつにも夜の、しかも月夜の人狼の街に足を踏み入れてしまったのだ。武器はあったがひとりでは話にならない。聞こえてくる遠吠えに怯えながら、シンジを捜すアスカ。
やがてアスカは、自分を誘うように前を横切る人狼の子供の後を追っていた。アスカの意識は恐怖で人狼にはそそがれておらず、その人狼の子が引きずるように着ているシンジの服だけを追っていた。
狭い通路を抜け、ビルの項に飛び出たとき、その光景にアスカは息が止まるかと思った。
あふれる月光の彼方にシンジがいた。そしてそこからアスカの立つところまで無数人狼がシンジに

向かって伏しているのである。
シンジが彼方を指し示すと、人狼の群れが一斉に吠えた。微笑みさえ浮かべて人狼とたわむれるシンジ。
恐怖よりももはや、その情景の一種異様な美しさに、あっけにとられるアスカだったが、ふいにシンジが彼女に穏やかな視線を向け手招きしたとき、不覚にも涙がこぼれ落ちてしまったのは、包み込まれるようなやさしさ、しかも他人からのやさしさに、あまりに久しく縁がなかったから……。
ネルフ施設内、リフレクターホールへ続くケージ内を、リツコを先頭に整備員の制止を振り切って歩いてくるエンジニアたち。
整備員「待ってください。01はいまレベルBまでのクールダウンの最小です！」
ホールへのゲートを開くリツコ。EVA01に向かって、
リツコ「シンジ君！・・・今、その中にいるのはシンジ君なの！？」
驚く一同、居合わせた人間すべてが01の方を向く。
ただEVAからはなにも読み取ることはできない。ただ人狼がそうするように月を仰いだ。
倒壊したビルの項に集う人狼の群、それぞれが月を仰いで嗚いている。
月明かりで光る人狼の群れの中の、シンジにひどく後ろ髪を引かれつつも、その場からなんとか走り去ろうとするアスカ。
あっさりシンジに受け入れられるのは彼女のプライドが許さなかったのだろうが、その表情は羞恥と困惑、そして一抹の期待。まるで、抱かれそうになって、腕を振りほどいて逃げる娘のようだ。
夢のような状況から走り去るアスカ。
シンジ「嫌ですよリツコさん！この前、精神補正したばかりじゃないですか！」
医療スキャナーのようなもののあるパイロット専用の医療室でシンジが抵抗している。
医療スタッフのほかになぜか保安局の人間よている。
シンジ「そのせいか、最近記憶が途切れたり、混乱してもう……！」
リツコ「シンジ君！！」
驚くシンジ。だがシンジが驚いたのはリツコが大声を出したからではなかった。シンジが抵抗したとき、保安局員が拳銃に手をやったのだ。
通路で綾波と出くわすシンジ。
シンジ「やあ綾波」
ビクッと身を震わせて、恐怖のまなざしを一瞬シンジに向け、自分の肩をつかんで身をすくめて足早に立ち去る綾波。
シンジ「（モノローグ）何かが変化している……」
曇り空の日中、ミサト率いる外界探査局がEVA00、０１を伴って施設外活動をしている。探査局員が、捕獲した人狼の腕から血液ぞ採取している。
探査局員A「この地区はもうだめです」
探査局員B「人狼になった彼らに、公害や危険物質なんでわかるわけないし、食べ物を作ることも忘れた彼らは、なんでも口にするしかない……」
ミサト「決行するわ。シンジ君、レイ、川の向こうからこちら、すべて焼きつくして」
レイ「了解」
シンジ「ちょっ、ちょっと待ってくださいミサトさん！彼らは敵じゃない！人間なんですよ！！」
ミサト「かわいそうなのはわかるけど、シンジ君、これは管理なの。放っておくとほかの地区にも伝染する、もっともっと多くの人が先んじゃうのよ」
シンジ「でも！」
ミサ卜「わかってるわシンジ君。自分でもまるで神様みたいなこと言ってるって……きっと私は地獄に落ちるわ。でもね、そうまでしてでも守らなければならないの……嫌だよね……私たちは望んだわけでもなく、とんだ羊飼いなんですもの」
震える手で操縦幹を握っているシンジ。
人狼から見たEVA。手にした杖で、すべてを焼き払う劫火を操る恐怖の神。
シンジ「(モノローグ）何から何を守っているのか？」
ただ逃げ惑う人狼たち。廃溢の街を炎が浄化してゆく。シンジ「(モノローグ)それは守らねばならないものなのか？……守ることで導き出される答えはあるのか……？」
火炎放射器の炎がすさまじい勢いで地上をなめてゆく中でシンジは、どこかで見た服をまとった1匹の人狼の子供、が、炎に巻かれるのを見た！
その剃那、月光の下でなんの恐怖も覚えずに、人狼の群の中にいるイメージが現われて消えた。
ネルフ中央実験都市内、指令部作戦室。
立体ディスプレー上に地球全土を覆う精神汚染の状態を仮想モデルでシミュレーションしており、碇ゲンドウを中心とするメーンスタッフがそれを見ている。
ゲンドウ「月が発振源でないとすると、月而反射か」
伊吹「はい。精神波はビーム状にされていても方向計測が困難なので、いままでは月の公転に合わせて入射角が変化していることに気付かなかったんです。結局は地球上から発振し、月をリフレクター代わりにしていたんですね。すでに、マップ上での発振源の絞り込みも完了しています」
ゲンドウ「後はそこへ行くまでだな」

アスカ「そこへ行った重装甲無人機は、たった1機を残してすべて破壊されたわ。かろうじて生き帰ったその1機を、さっき見せられたの。機体はボロボロ……データもユニットごと破壊されてて……」
02ケージに向かう通路の片隅て、アスカはいきなりシンジの胸に顔をうずめるようにつき当たってくる(腕は固さず、さげたまま)。そのまま壁に押し付けられるシンジ。
何かリアクションするとまた何か言われそうなので、困惑したまま立ちつくすシンジ。
アスカ「何やってるのよ（下を向いたままで)。あのときみたいに私を迎え入れてみなさいよ。あんたケダモノたちの王様なんでしょ」
シンジにはなんのことだかわからない。
アスカ「(だんだん泣き声、で）やめてよ……あんたになんかに同情されたら、ますますみじめになるじゃない……」
皮肉にも、こういう場面になってEVA02に換装される〝死神の背骨〟。
空中キャリアーから切り離されるEVA02。
キャリアーパイロット「つまり、これは名誉挽回のステージってわけだ、カワイ子ちゃん」
アスカ「ちょっと！ちゃんと回収してくれるんでしょね！？」
キャリアーパイロット「それは、あんたのがん、ばりしだいだ」
アスカ「……！」
屈辱の表情-地表に降りていくEVA02。
どのくらいEVA02は歩いたろうか。
日もすっかり暮れたころ、アスカは行く手の都市の廃嘘の中に、青白く光る有機的な形の巨大な建造物を見つける。
アスカ「コンピュータ、あれをなんだと思う？」
コンピュータ「不明ですが、物体の組成はEVAのそれに類似しています。細胞の分裂パターンから推測すると、一個の素体から生成したものではなく、複数同時に生成したものを、大型の工作機械で組み立てたようなブロック構造が府主肴したものと思われます」
青白い構造物をバックにして、腕を組んだ人のようなシルエットが立ち上がる。
アスカ「大型の工作機械ね……。コンピュータ、EVAの調子はどう？」
コンピュータ「緊張度（テンション）が急速に増大しています」
アスカ「本能的にアレが敵ってことよ、テンションが上がりすぎないように注意してなさい（シー卜に深く座り直して）、マークの合図て全速出すよ……！」
ネルフ中央実験都市、リフレクターホールでたたずむEVA01。
それを見上げているシンジ。
シンジ「僕が乗っていないとき、お前は宇宙の声を聞いているんだって、日向さんたちは言っているけれど……」
自分に変化が起こっていることにうすうす気付いてきているが、まだ認めてないし自覚もないので、漠然と疎外感だけ覚えている。
シンジ「本当はどうなんだい……？本当なら、いつか僕にも聞かせてよ……」
すさまじい勢いて光線を放ってくるフオウチュン。
廃嘘の都市を、光線を避けてまわるEVA02。倒壊したピル等もあまり遮蔽物として役に立たず、なかなか攻撃に移れずにいる。
アスカ「〝死神の背骨〟の目を覚まさせといて！並行してスーパーシンクロナイザー始動、私がディープステージにまで潜ってシンクロ率を上げたらどんなにおっかないか、見てらっしゃいよ！！」

コンピュータ「ディープステージモード、シフトスタート」
アスカ「私の体に悪きしないでよ」
コンピュータ「繰り返してください」
バイザーからの光の中でぐったりしてゆくアスカ。いま、アスカの精神は体から切り離されEVAのボディに滋依しつつある。やがてコンソールからアスカの声。
アスカ「冗談よ」
上アゴのような銃口のカパーの後方にある補助グリップをEVA02の左手が引き寄せると、01の雄叫びのような砲障をあげて〝死神の背骨〟の銃口は、まさに怪獣の口のごとく開いた。同時に銃身の両側に並んだ鱗状の装甲が一斉に聞いて、内部にEVAの背骨のような銃身が見えたと思ったのも束の問、まわりの空聞を歪め始める。
銃を構えてピルの陰から飛び出す02。
もらった！とアスカは思ったが、どうしたことかロックオンできない。
アスカ「！？ちょっと！！何ビビってるのよ！この体の重さすぎる！」
なんとかトリガーを引き絞るアスカ、複雑な位相光を残して飛び去る弾体、フオウチュンから大きくはずれて背後の山脈へ。
アスカ「まずい！引きずっていく質量が、大きすぎる！」
弾体を包んでいた位相空間が崩壊し、空間がそこへ向かって吸い込まれるように（山脈の一部もごっそりもってゆかれる）小さくなったと思った直後に、その点が大爆発。アスカたちがいる所を合めて、まぶしい光の中、まるで散弾が一面に降りそそいでいるような状態になる。
その爆発の中で、アスカはフオウチュンが初めて組んだ腕を解くのを見た。同時に背中に寝かせてあったパイロンが肩の上に起き上がる。
アスカ「あなた……EVAなの！？」
両手首をフオウチュンに掴まれてしまう02。フオウチュンの一尉には自分が腕を組んでいたときに、手を入れておく手型がある。
その手型に、摑まれた子を入れられてしまう02。新たな異常に気付くアスカ。
アスカ「コンピューター-スーパーシンクロナイズ・カット！ディープステージから、通常モードに引き戻して！いますぐ！」
コンピュータ「通常ステージ復帰シークェンス・スタート。108、107……」
アスカ「お願い！いますぐ戻して！！そんな……！？吸い込まれるよ！情報も……力も……私も……！なにもかもが……いやあ！！誰か助けて！(だんだん雑音混じりで聞こえなくなっていく)」
ネルフ本局指令♂部会議室。やられる寸前まで送られ続けていた02の情報は、アスカの声が消え入るとすぐノイズが走り、途絶えてしまう。
ゲンドウ「問題なのは、この新たなEVAよりもむしろ、この後ろに写っているオブジェの解析だ。進んでいるのか？」
伊吹「MAGI2は…………こんなことってあるのかしら……。とんでもない推測を突きつけてきました。フオウチュンに、3体以上と推測されるEVAを使って何かを建造しようとする意志を見いだせる。後ろの物体内に、エネルギーの流動や偏向のためのルートが多数見られるものの、サイクルとして機能するには分断箇所が多すぎることを〝未完成〟の理由であるとし、その分断箇所に沿ってEVAのパーツと適合する質所が多数存在したためこの結果に達したようです。この場合、必要なEVAをその数と配置パターンから最低3機としています」

アップとして2機の「震電」級陸上軽巡がフル積載の状態で控えている。
その足元を複数のネルフ局員が駆けている。炎をめぐらせた堀を越えて人狼が施設内に紛れ込んだらしい。
人狼は、施設内の入り組んだ通路を逃げている途中で、ひとりでいる綾波と出くわす。
一瞬、跨路した人狼だったが、すぐさま綾波に襲いかかる。
意外な素早さで人狼に払いを掛ける綾波。振り向きざま、すでに拳銃を梶っており、人狼の足を撃ち抜く。もんどりうって倒れる、人狼の悲痛な叫び。
綾波「私はつくられたものだから、あなたのことばは響かない。私にわかることばで話しなさい」
一発撃つ綾波。
綾波「私はケダモノがきらい。ケダモノの棲むヒ卜も嫌い」
さらに引き金を絞る綾波。
モニターディスプレーのみが光る一室で、コンソールに子をついたシンジが驚傍の表情て自分の映像を見ている。
映像は施設内の監規カメラのもので、暴れるシンジを保安部員2人が組み伏せている。
そこへ研究員を2人ともなった綾波が通りかかったとき、ものすごい力で大人2人を振り解くシンジ。
声を発するも、それはことばでなく、シンジは綾波に襲いかかっていく。
止めに入る人聞をことごとくはじき飛ばすシンジ。衣服を引き裂かれ、床に組み敷かれるにいたって、初めて恐怖の表情を見せる綾波。
そして叫び。
モニターを見つめるシンジ。あまりのことにその表情のまま凍りついたようになっている。
シンジ「そんな……これ……ぼく？」
いつの間にか、背後にいる父、碇司令。ハッとなって振り返るシンジ。
ゲンドウ「そうだ、世界規模の精神汚染を受けたあのとき、お前はここにいなかった」
モニターの声「銃を！麻酔銃を早く！！」
ゲンドウ「すでに、お前は重度に汚染されている」
モニターの中からの銃声に、ビクッと身を震わせるシンジ。
ゲンドウ「お前が正常でいられるのはEVAの中にいるとき、その影響下にあるときだけだ」
施設内を歩くシンジ。銃を携行した保安部員が両側を固めているが、そんなことは問題ではないようだ。彼を悩ませているのは自分自身。
目の前をストレッチャーを押す集団が慌ただしく走り抜ける。
ストレッチャーの上で暴れているのはミサトだ。
同僚の所員「押さえろ！」
所員A「瓦燦のすき間に落ちた人狼の子を助けようとして、シールドの外に長くいすぎたんだ！」
看護士「安定時聞を日分もオーバーしてる……うまくいっても後遺症が出るかもしれん！」
シンジの頭の中に碇司令の声が響く。
ゲンドウ「EVAから離れたとき、お前は人でなくなる。」
ネルフ本局司令部のフロアをただならぬ表情で歩いてくるリツコ、そのまま管制室の扉をくぐり抜ける。リツコ「EVA01、00との通信は、復帰しましたか！？」
冬月「いやまだだ。広侍域の電磁嵐はまだ続いているよ。回復の見込みはない」
伊吹「朗報もあります。先ほど青葉さんが、まだ生きている民間の衛星を見つけて軌道変更成功しました！1EVAとレーザー回線で通話できそうです」
青葉「とはいうものの、使える軌道に乗せるまでに丸1日はかかりそうです」
冬月「それより……先はど君の名前で出されたEVA01、00に対する作戦中止命令の理由を聞こう」
一同リツコを注視する。
コンソールへ進んで、内分のラボのコンピュータとつなぐリツコ。
リツコ「EVAを生み出すプロセスを……何度かのシミュレーションで、フオウチュンの誕生を確認しました。我々はEVAに対する価値基準を根本的に変える必要に迫られそうです」
ディスプレーに映し出される、分裂を続けるEVAの疑似細胞核。ところが途中から勾厳に遺伝情報が書き変わっていく。やがてそれが細胞そのものの変化に表われた瞬間、レーザーで光圧処理される。
ゲンドウ「続けたまえ」
リツコ「3体のか水準に達した。EVAがこの世に存在すると、その次には必ずフオウチュンが生まれる。これがEVAという種の絶対法則のようです」
日向「でもEVAは、すでに何体も存在していたじゃないですか。なぜいまになって？」
ゲンドウ「EVAはそれ自体が進化する」
冬月「その中でもお眼鏡にかなったEVAはわずかというわけか。しかし、フオウチュンはともかくEVAを造ったのは人間だ。種としての行動といえるかな」
リツコ「EVAはなぜ人型なのやでしょう。文明をもつ生物が、同じ形のものを見つけたら……」
冬月「興味をもつな」
リツコ「さらに科学技術が進歩すれば」
冬月「まず、調べるために複製してみて……！？ばかな！……初めから、原始の時代から仕組まれていたことだというのか！？」
ゲンドウ「タネはひとつだった。我々がそのタネを増やし、育てた」
リツコ「そして、収穫のときは来たのです」
フオウチュンのテリトリーに侵入しつつあるEVA01。
不思議ときっぱりとした顔のシンジ。
シンジ「あ」

シンジ「アスカの落とし物か……」
人狼からEVAの指し示すその向こうへ……いまシンジは、ヒ卜という存在がその聞を初抽出うものだと感じ始めている。
月下の瓦礁の衡を進むEVA01。右肩に〝死神の背骨〟を装備している。やや、遠巻きにして、人狼たちが後を追う。
川を飛び越えるEVA01。うずくまるように着地するほどの大ジャンプ。着地の音響が消えた無音の街に、衝撃で述統的にふれあう〝死神の背骨〟の、鱗状アーマーの金属的な残響が尾を引〈。
やがて、まわりにいた人狼の姿が消えていることに気付くシンジ。踏み越えてはならないエリアに侵入したらしい（実は1匹だけ、EVA01の後を追い続けている人狼がいる。聞に光る目は人狼のそれだが、その姿はアスカだ。廃櫨から廃他地へ飛び移り、EVA01を見下ろしている)。
フオウチュンのオブジェが一望できる丘の上に立つEVA01。
シンジ「さて……と」
すでに神の領域ごときは侵して久しく
少年の背の羽は黒く変わって抜け落ちた
すべてに近い人々が人狼となったいま
ヒトという存在は
限りなく自分ひとりの意味に近づき
全体の中の1個とする自分自身の認識を
彼は脱ぎ捨てつつある
彼はことごとくを打ち払ってでも前へ進む道を選ぶ
