Ryoji Kaji (Jr)

Ryoji Kaji is Misato Katsuragi and Ryoji Kaji's 14-year-old son. He appears in Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, working in a Wille Outdoor Laboratory near Village-3 as a maintenance technician for the L Barrier system that prevents the soil and all living beings from being turned to core. Kensuke Aida introduces Shinji to him during the former's stay in Village-3, and it is heavily implied that Kensuke takes the picture of Shinji and the younger Kaji that Shinji eventually shows to Misato on the Wunder. While Kaji Jr. is on-screen for relatively little time, his existence is implied to be one of the main motivations for Misato to fight against Nerv.

Named after his father and born after his death, the younger Kaji was conceived at an undetermined point in time during or shortly after the events of Evangelion 2.0. Misato's pregnancy was an impetus for Kaji to provide the sacrifice necessary to put an end to Third Impact, in events that were briefly seen in flashback.

Misato has a very distant relationship with her son, much like Gendo's own relationship with Shinji. Kensuke states that Misato keeps a distance from him in order to protect him from afar. This could be interpreted as Misato attempting attempt to shield him from threats to his life from Nerv, or due to the knowledge that her resistance to Nerv would leave him with little in the way of being able to care for him (and therefore harm him). Nevertheless, she is glad to know that her son is well when Shinji brings her the news of his well-being, and asks Shinji to take care of her son. Although he is not seen onscreen in person afterwards, Misato wishes Kaji goodbye through his photograph when she sacrifices her life.
