Old Tokyo (Tokyo-1) is the former capital of Japan, the original city of Tokyo.

Seven days after Second Impact and as a result of post-Impact wars, Tokyo was destroyed on September 20th, 2000, by a weapon of mass destruction (it is not specified who launched this attack). The destruction of Tokyo also resulted in the death of half a million people.

By 2015, in Episode 07, this wasteland of mud and earth is used as a proving ground for Jet Alone, a giant robot built by a large industrial consortium as a potential replacement for Evas (as a "humane" form of anti-Angel weaponry).
