Matsushiro, Japan, is the location of a Nerv secondary testing facility, located adjacent to the nearby city of Tokyo-2. The first attempt to activate Evangelion Unit-03 was conducted at Matsushiro but went horribly awry, as it became apparent that the Angel Bardiel had infected and taken over Eva 03. Bardiel's awakening resulted in an explosion which destroyed the base.
