First Lieutenant Makato Hyuga is one of the three main computer technicians at Nerv HQ, along with Maya Ibuki and Shigeru Aoba, often carrying out orders directed from Misato Katsuragi.
Hyuga is a bit nerdy, reading manga comics during breaks at Nerv HQ, but he is quite competent at his job. He is actually quite resourceful, as seen when he commandeered a propaganda truck to warn Nerv HQ of an approaching Angel during the power sabotage in Episode 11.
Hyuga secretly acts as a spy for Misato, trying to dig up information about the Evangelion project and Nerv's real agenda. It appears that even the other technicians like Maya or Shigeru are not aware that he is helping Misato.
Hyuga has an innocent crush on Misato, which she seems to be aware of but doesn't mind, and Hyuga does not interfere with Misato's relationship with Kaji when she renews it.
