An ancient race of progenitor aliens termed the "First Ancestral Race" seeded life throughout the galaxy billions of years ago by spreading beings known as "Seeds of Life" to many worlds.  Although they were never meant to co-exist, billions of years ago Lilith landed on Earth some time after Adam did.  The Angels are the direct progeny of Adam, while when Lilith arrived she spread the primordial ooze, LCL (actually, Lilith's own blood) which eventually evolved into the first single-celled life on Earth and ultimately, Homo sapiens.  Thus Lilith is, through an indirect path, the progenitor of humanity.

As both Adam and Lilith are "Seeds of Life" created by the First Ancestral Race, and Angels come from Adam, humans could thus in a sense be considered the "18th Angel".  However, strictly defined "Angels" are the offspring of Adam:  they benefited from the "Fruit of Life" (Otherwise known as the S² Engine; the source of their power and regenerative capabilities), while humans benefited from the "Fruit of Knowledge".  Thus, humans and Angels are still fundamentally different.  Still, the revelation that humans come from Lilith, as Angels come from Adam, demonstrates that Angels are no more "alien" to Earth than humans are, both ultimately being created by the First Ancestral Race.

Notes
*"Lilin" is not actually spelt anywhere in the series or the official materials, and the pronunciation varies slightly between dub voice actors. "Lilin" is the accepted spelling due to its appearance in the trailer for Rebuild 2.0.
