Heavy Fighter Jet-VTOLs form the backbone of modern military forces in the year 2015, and are in use by both the United Nations and Japanese Strategic Self Defense Force. Relying on VTOL (Verital Take-Off and Landing) propulsion like earlier Harrier jets, they are very maneuverable, capable of hovering as well as circling around a target, and even reversing. Heavy Fighter Jet-VTOLs are hovering weapons platforms, carrying a heavy payload of advanced missiles and rockets, effectively wielding the firepower of a flying battleship. The Heavy Fighter Jet-VTOL dominates the battlefields of the post-Second Impact world.
However, despite their impressive firepower and position at the pinnacle of current military technology, HF VTOLs are still conventional weapons, incapable of penetrating A.T. Fields.
Thus, they are almost completely ineffective against both Angels and Evangelions, which swat them down almost like toys.
