Hakone (箱根町, Hakone-machi?) is a town in Japan, in Kanagawa Prefecture, in Ashigarashimo District, located on the eastern foot of Hakone Pass.
Hakone hosts substantial tourist activity, and many, both Japanese and international visitors, come to Hakone to relax, for treatment at the health resorts, visit the parks, or hike the surrounding mountains. The volcanically active Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, centered around Lake Ashinoko, is a popular tourist attraction well known for its onsen hot springs and its views of Mt. Fuji.

In the series, the city of Tokyo-3 is built on the site of former Hakone. Prior to the construction of Tokyo-3, Hakone was the location of the United Nations Artificial Evolution Laboratory, where Project E was underway.
