Fly Me to the Moon was chosen as the ending theme for the Evangelion TV series. The music and lyrics were composed by Bart Howard, originally released under the title "In Other Words," with the title being officially changed to "Fly Me to the Moon" a few years later. It had already been covered and released countless times by various artists, most notably by Frank Sinatra.

Lyrics

Fly me to the moon
And let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like
On Jupiter and Mars
In other words, hold my hand
In other words, darling kiss me

Fill my heart with song
And let me sing forevermore
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, I love you

The Intro

Fly Me to the Moon has an intro that is omitted by most artists, including Sinatra (Perry Como included it in his version):

Poets often use many words to say a simple thing.
It takes thought and rhyme to make a poem sing.
With words and with music I've been playing.
For you I have written this song.
To make sure you understand what I'm saying.
I'll translate as I go along…

Versions for Evangelion

The pre-Renewal releases of Evangelion (the original televised — or OA — version and LD/video version) had multiple versions of this song that it would use for the end credits of different episodes. However, for the Renewal DVD release, even more new versions were created: some edits of versions previously released to album, others completely new (the vocal tracks, anyway). In the Renewal, every episode has a unique version of FMTTM for its ED (or, at least, was supposed to… see the endnotes). It's quite a mess, so here's a concise guide to exactly which versions of FMTTM are used in both the original and Renewal versions of the series. Hopefully, it will be the final word on the matter.

“Release Title” is how that particular version of FMTTM was entitled for album release. “Version” is how a particular version of FMTTM is designated in Data of Evangelion.

  • 1. This is a shortened version of “FLY ME TO THE MOON <Asuka Bossa Techno TV.Size Version>” from ADDITION, although, unlike that release, this one actually is TV size.
  • 2. It seems these are all TV-sized edits of “FLY ME TO THE MOON <Main Version II>” from ADDITION.
  • 3. This is a shortened version of “FLY ME TO THE MOON —MISATO 4 BEAT TV.Size VERSION—” from ADDITION, although, unlike that release, this one actually is TV size.
  • 4. Data of Evangelion (an information booklet which came with the Renewal DVD-BOX) lists this version as “4BEAT (OFF) (65-seconds)”, but this isn't what is actually played (if an audio rip somebody with Renewal provided me is reliable, anyway).
  • 5.Similar problem as above. Listed in Data as “Bossa Techno (OFF) (65-seconds)”, but that's not the version that plays.

Evangelion 1.0

Fly Me to the Moon was covered by Utada Hikaru for use in trailers for Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone. It was included as the B-side track on Hikaru's single, Beautiful World/Kiss and Cry, titled "Fly Me to the Moon (In Other Words) -2007 MIX-." It was never released for any sort of airplay, save for TV commercials promoting Rebuild of Evangelion.

Notes

  • There are 31 different versions of this song for the original series.
