UrsusArctos: The telephone and electric poles with the wires hanging limp in the sunset is a visual shorthand for broken communication/connections. It's beautiful and forlorn at the same time.

046
UrsusArctos: The sunset lighting makes the waters of Lake Ashi look like the red of the oceans in End of Evangelion and prefigure what is to come.

SHINJI (MONO):“Everyone, including Toji and Kensuke, lost their homes and left.”
UrsusArctos: These sunset shots are as beautiful as they are melancholic and prefigure the credits scene of Death, adding to the feeling of desolation from Shinji's monologue. Incidentally, the mysterious moving explosion crater from last episode has flooded other small craters on the side.

Dr. Nick: After central Tokyo-3 was poofed out of existence in an anticlimactic way in the last episode, this one attempts to make the scale of the destruction more concrete. And the desolation in view of course matches what Shinji is feeling at the moment.

049
SHINJI (MONO):“My friends... I don't have anyone I can call a friend anymore.”
Dr. Nick: Shinji puts into words why this episode miraculously works, even though Kaworu has so little screen time: Shinji is just that desperate for non-messed-up human contact.

050A
SHINJI (MONO):“There's no one.”
Mr. Tines: Be careful what you wish for.

SHINJI (MONO):“I can't go see Ayanami. I don't have the courage for it.

I don't know how I'm supposed to face her. Asuka, Miss Misato, Mother... What should I...”

Mr. Tines: He only has women to call upon, and those only rhetorically; all male companions have been taken away. At this point we realise that the pilots never interacted directly with the bridge bunnies.

24 C051b.jpg

051
SHINJI (MONO):“What should I do?”
UrsusArctos: Sunset is the time in Japanese folklore when ghosts and youkai (supernatural creatures) are encountered. That should be a hint that whoever is humming the Ode to Joy right now has more to him than meets the eye.

KAWORU:“Singing is great. Singing enriches the soul.

It's the crowning achievement of the civilization that the Lilim created.”

UrsusArctos: Our favorite bishōnen makes his appearance! Sitting on a headless angel statue, referring to humans as "Lilin", plus the time-honored anime trope of making characters more attractive as they grow more powerful ought to be clear hints of who he really is.
Additional Commentary

dzzthink: The headless angel also being what he becomes later!

UrsusArctos: Funny that everyone thinks of Kaworu as a headless Angel, when his head is all that's left of him. Come Evangelion 3.0, though, you're absolutely right.

KAWORU:“Don't you feel the same? Shinji Ikari?”
UrsusArctos: It's been a looong time since the ancient headcanon that Kaworu was created from Dr. Katsuragi in the same way that Rei was created from Yui Ikari came down on these parts. The sole image we have of Dr. Katsuragi's face does nothing to explicitly disprove this theory, which has been around for long enough to be "received wisdom" in these parts even after the original creator disowned the idea in 2008. While we've never had any confirmation who Kaworu's genetic donor was, the idea that it was Dr. Katsuragi makes a huge deal more sense than a random nobody, and I personally love the idea myself.

Dr. Nick: It's a fascinating idea, a sort of fan reconstruction of what looks like a missing piece of character parallelism. After all, it's Shinji and Misato who are the two protagonists of the story, and since the clone of Shinji's parent became a vessel for a progenitor being's soul, it would be a cool late series twist if it was revealed that the same was true for Misato as well. It would be a huge thing. But such revelation never happens, so the idea remains a ghost of a plot point. In a way, it's the Eva fandom's version of Jar Jar Binks being a secret Sith lord.

UrsusArctos: Ahmed Best (Jar Jar's actor) came as close to confirming that theory as is possible for someone bound under an NDA with Lucasfilm. Perhaps in future, someone lucky enough to talk to Anno or Akio Satsukawa about this might get something similar...or have that idea blown out of the water entirely.

054
SHINJI:“My name...”

KAWORU:“Everyone knows your name. I don't mean to be rude, but I think you should be a little more aware of your position.”

SHINJI:“You think so? Who are you?”

KAWORU:“I'm Kaworu, Kaworu Nagisa. One of the children that's part of the design, just like you. I'm the Fifth Child.”

SHINJI:“The Fifth Child? You are? Nagisa?”

UrsusArctos: Kaworu was named after Nagisa Oshima, and "Nagisa" literally means "shore" or "beach". Both Kaworu and Shinji are at the shore, with Kaworu on the statue in the water, and Shinji on the land. Kaworu himself is a liminal being, both Angel and Lilin, among other things. Episode 10 ended with Misato at a "shore" of sorts looking at the sunset and talking about forgetting "ancient history", but that history has returned to haunt her in Kaworu's form.

HYUGA (OFF):“It appears the Fifth Child has just arrived.”

24 C059a.jpg

059
MISATO:“Kaworu Nagisa, his past records have already been erased.”

24 C060a.jpg

MISATO:“The same as Rei...”

HYUGA:“But the one thing we do know is that his birthday coincides with the Second Impact.”

MISATO:“The Committee sent him directly to us. There's bound to be something to this.”

HYUGA:“In the Marduk Report, the matter of the Fifth Child is also designated as confidential. So, I did a little hacking into the Intelligence Department's database.”

MISATO:“You're so reckless!”

HYUGA:“It was worth it though. I found out where Miss Ritsuko's being held. How do you want to go about the Fifth Child's synch test?”

MISATO:“Let's hold off on the trick questions today and get a straight reading”

UrsusArctos: Hyuga and Misato are full-on co-conspirators in this episode. To add further suspicion to his intro, we get ourselves a couple of ominous/mysterious hints at Kaworu's nature and origins. Although the timeline is fuzzy, this episode occurs late enough in 2015 that Kaworu, born on September 13, 2000, is 15 at this point.
