I'm the best in the world!”	UrsusArctos: This is probably the most horrific and disturbing opening scene in all anime. Poor Asuka. Mr. Tines: What ever just happened to so exalt her also set her up for the fall that we've seen going on for the past 8 episodes

Just for you!”	dzzthink: The episode starts almost within Asuka's mind as if we are walking through a door into her subconscious, something that she has hidden from others throughout the series. The similar sunset-like/LCL-orange lighting is reminiscent of Shinji's dream of being on a train after being abandoned by his father.

	014B		Dr. Nick: Notice the scene transition trick here, with the sound effect (slap) from the next scene overwriting the expected audio (door slamming shut). This same slap transition was later used in Death to overwrite the gunshot in Kaji's death scene, which left the ADV English-language dubbing team flabbergasted. }}
	014C	ASUKA (OFF):“I don't want to hear any more of that garbage from you!”	Mr. Tines: This one scene is the most significant addition in the DC episodes, in terms of linking to EoE. All the added background and flash-back sequences pale in comparison with this in relationship to the callback that's made to it.
	014D	ASUKA (OFF):“You're just stupid anyway, Shinji!”
	014E	SHINJI (OFF):“How many times do I have to tell you?! Kaji's gone!”
	014F		dzzthink: It's an interesting transition to see the still image of the coffee pot being in the holder at 14C, followed by it being spilled and evaporating here. What happened during Asuka's and Shinji's argument and who spilled it is left unclear but the events could be similar to EoE. UrsusArctos: This part was absent in the original episode but inserted in the Director's Cut version, since it was meant to tie into that scene in EoE.

	016	ASUKA:“Synch rate, zero... Not qualified to be the Second Child...”	Mr. Tines: The zero to infinity swap doesn't apply here.
	017	ASUKA:“There's no reason for me to exist anymore.”
	018	ASUKA:“Because no one will look at me now.”
	019	ASUKA:“Not Dad, not Mom, not anyone.”
	020	ASUKA:“There's no reason for me to live now.” MAN (OFF):“Asuka Langley Sohryu, correct?”	UrsusArctos: Asuka's clothes are folded, and since we later see Asuka with bandages on her wrists, it's implied she attempted suicide by cutting her wrists here. It's a good thing this wasn't made too obvious. As it is, Asuka is catatonic for this entire episode and the start of End of Evangelion. Dr. Nick: Before the Renewal remastering, what little blood we see here wasn't properly visible, and many fan debates were had over "Wait, did she actually...?" The folded clothes were actually a bigger giveaway that this was indeed a suicide attempt.

	023	HYUGA:“Intelligence Division 2 reports that they have the Second Child safely in their custody.”
	024	MISATO:“I see.”
	025	MISATO:“It isn't like Division 2 to take seven days to find her on top of losing her in the first place.” HYUGA:“It's probably on purpose. Maybe they're trying to spite us here in the Tactical Division.” MISATO:“Possibly.”	Dr. Nick: The map shows the outlying urban areas of Tokyo-3 that were spared from Eva-00's explosion.
	026	MISATO (MONO):“And today, Asuka's replacement, the Fifth Child, arrives. Everything is just too perfect.”	UrsusArctos: Division 2 is demonstrably rife with Seele agents and has been operating against Nerv since Fuyutsuki's kidnapping in Episode 21, and Misato's suspicions about the setup turn out to be entirely true. Seele's pulling a lot of strings here.
