Title2

EYECATCH B:“EPISODE #23': REI III”

191

192

UrsusArctos: The fourth new Ashinoko lake forms over the remains of Tokyo-3 - at least in the Director's Cut. In the original aired version it's hard to make out how badly damaged the city is, but Episode 24 nevertheless shows that Tokyo-3 is pretty much wiped out by the explosion, with buildings partially or completely submerged in the crater lake.

Dr. Nick: The armor plating must have been impeccably fixed after Zeruel, considering the Geofront doesn't spring any leaks. One would assume the shafts of the retractable buildings would cause an issue, but let's chalk this up to lightsaber logic.

193

MAN (OFF):“No antibiotic substance from the 16th Angel has been found thus far.”

194

MAN (OFF):“We will continue searching.”

MAN (OFF):“Level C traces are spreading towards the southwest.”

195

MAN:“Dr. Akagi!”

UrsusArctos: Barely visible to the left of the screen is Rei's carbonized hand, frozen in the position of reaching out. "Kentucky Fried Rei" might be a bit too much for Colonel Sanders to sell, so it's good that she's mostly hidden in darkness...

Dr. Nick: Kentucky Fried Rei and Asuka's bath time in the next episode are two important scenes where the improved visual fidelity of the Renewal remasters really helped fandom to figure out what's actually going on. Before, you couldn't tell with certainty that it is indeed Rei's charred hand and arm at the bottom. The important lore implication is that her soul stayed with her dead body, and Nerv had to use some sort of technical means to transfer it to a new empty clone body, thus creating Rei III; her soul didn't just automatically jump into the next body like in Quantum Leap. Rei's soul is of course special, but in EoE it is confirmed that souls of normal humans linger with their earthly remains like this as well.

196

RITSUKO:“What happened here will be classified top secret. Take back the plug. Dispose of everything else.”

Mr. Tines: ...and break out one of the spares.

197

MAN:“Roger that.”

MAN:“Let's get to work! Quickly!”

198

KEEL:“The promised time is near.”

TEXT:“Sachiel”

TEXT:“The 4th Angel Shamshiel”

MAN C (OFF):“At last, we have defeated up through the 16th Angel.”

TEXT:“The 5th Angel Ramiel The 6th Angel Gaghiel The 7th Angel Israfel The 8th Angel Sandalphon”

MAN D (OFF):“That leaves only one Angel described in Seele's Dead Sea Scrolls.”

TEXT:“The 9th Angel Matriel The 10th Angel Sahaqiel The 11th Angel Yrouel The 12th Angel Leliel The 13th Angel Baradiel The 14th Angel Zeruel TEXT: The 15th Angel Ariel The 16th Angel Armisael”

Mr. Tines: Despite Gendo's stonewalling, SEELE have acquired an accurate count through other channels.

199

KEEL:“Our journey has been long and the sacrifices have been great.”

KEEL:“And we need someone who knows the truth.”

MAN B:“Indeed, first, the Lance of Longinus, and now, the loss of Unit 00.”

MAN A:“We have more than enough reasons to relieve Ikari of his command.”

MAN C:“That man is smart enough to know the significance of why we allowed Fuyutsuki to return safely.”

MAN D:“We need another human sacrifice to counter Ikari.”

200

Ritsuko's office. The cat ornaments on her desk.

UrsusArctos: Those cat ornaments resemble Diana and Artemis from Sailor Moon, minus the crescent moon forehead markings.

201

Ritsuko resting her chin on her hand UP.
Her gaze shifts.

202

She presses the Return key on her BOOK computer.

203

Ritsuko's head in front. A photograph of Ikari, her mother, and Ritsuko as a senior high school student is displayed on the screen.

204

Pull in on this. A sulky-faced Ritsuko.

UrsusArctos: There somehow seemed a touch of Major Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell to sulky-faced young Ritsuko, but I've never been able to put my finger on the reason for the resemblance. Is it simply the purplish hair?

205

Ritsuko gazes, resting her chin on her hand.

206

Likewise, Ikari and Ritsuko's smiling mother.

UrsusArctos: Mother and daughter, both caught up in their mad love for the same man...given that Naoko's birthday and age are not known and she does seem rather young, it doesn't seem out of the question for her to have been a mother very early. Ritsuko falling for a man much older than herself would, in that case, be history repeating itself. Like mother, like daughter...

207

Ritsuko from behind. The picture pulls back.

208

Shinji's room. The ceiling.

209

S-DAT

210

Shinji leans against the wall, spacing out and gazing up at the ceiling.

MISATO (OFF):“Shinji, I'm coming in.”

When the fusuma opens, Misato's silhouette appears.
Shinji doesn't respond.

UrsusArctos: Twenty-odd episodes later, it finally goes off...

211

A headphone atop the sheet.

212

Shinji in front, Misato further in.
She sits down onto the bed.

213

Bird's-eye view.

SHINJI:“Miss Misato, the tears won't come. I feel sad, but the tears just won't come.”

MISATO:“Shinji, this is about all I can do for you right now.”

dzzthink: Poor Shinji. If he wasn't completely isolated at the start of this episode, I can understand he must feel numb at this point. Rei if anything was his confidant and someone he felt a kinship with.

UrsusArctos: While I wouldn't call Rei his "confidant", he certainly had been opening up to her and he does put two and two together about the "kinship" part very soon...

214

Shinji's hand, up from the previous shot.
Just as MIsato gently touches him, Shinji's hands pulls away in rejection.

SHINJI:“Stop it!”

215

Shinji turns away from Misato, hiding his expression from view.

SHINJI:“Stop it, Miss Misato.”

MISATO (OFF):“I'm sorry.”

216

View from above. Misato closes the fusuma.

217

Misato's face in profile.

MISATO (MONO):“But he must be feeling lonely. Is he afraid of women?”

218

Shinji with his back turned.

219

Misato from the side.

MISATO (MONO):“No, he's afraid of being intimate with people.”

At the end of the cut, she glances back up and walks OFF.

220

Misato, with Pen Pen in front.
Misato squats and holds out her hand to Pen Pen.

MISATO:“Pen Pen, come here.”

221

With a squawk, Pen Pen faces her, but he turns back again.

222

Misato, with Pen Pen in front.

223

Misato UP.
She looks slightly self-derisive.

MISATO (MONO):“I see, it doesn't matter who. I am the one who is lonely.”

dzzthink: Misato admits to herself that she can not comfort others as she herself is not in any reasonable state to do so.
