ATTENDEE A (OFF):“The hypothetical became reality. Talk about unlucky, the proponent becoming the test subject herself.”

ATTENDEE B (OFF):“Then, that contact experiment was the direct cause?”

ATTENDEE A (OFF):“Mental breakdown, that was the result of the contact.”

ATTENDEE B (OFF):“But how cruel is it to commit suicide, leaving such a young daughter behind?”

ATTENDEE C (OFF):“No, there might actually be more to this than that.”

UrsusArctos: All of the dialogue hints at what happened to Asuka's mother to drive her crazy in the first place. Interestingly enough, the dialogue does not reference Yui at all, although Asuka is older than Shinji was when Yui had her contact experiment and outright disappeared in the Eva. Perhaps Kyoko's contact experiment occurred before Yui's and she remained alive (and mad) for a prolonged period of time before finally committing suicide. If that's the case, Asuka, whose birthday makes her several months younger than Shinji, could remember nothing of her but her mad side. Poor kid. :(

MOTHER:“Asuka, dear”

MOTHER:“your mom cooked your favorite dish today.”

MOTHER:“Come on, if you're picky about your food, that big girl over there is going to laugh at you.”

LADY DOCTOR (OFF):“She goes on like that every day. She talks to the doll, thinking it's her daughter.”

FATHER (OFF):“She probably feels responsible in her own way. Her research filled her days and she had no time to pay attention to our daughter.”

LADY DOCTOR (OFF):“You have my sympathies.”

FATHER (OFF):“But the way she is, they're practically a family of dolls. No, perhaps humans and dolls are not so different.”

LADY DOCTOR (OFF):“Humans made dolls in their own image. If God exists, we may be nothing more than dolls to Him.”

FATHER (OFF):“I'm surprised to hear such words from a practitioner of modern medicine.”

LADY DOCTOR (OFF):“I'm just another human before I'm a doctor, a flesh and blood woman.”

Dr. Nick: The last lines here hint towards Asuka's dad and the lady doctor having an affair. A bit later, cut 215 basically confirms this, and Sadamoto's manga expands upon this plot point.

ASUKA (CHILD):“It's okay. I'm not going to cry. I'm going to think for myself.”

RITSUKO (OFF):“Can you hear me, Asuka? Your synch rate is down by eight points. As always, keep your mind off other things.”

ASUKA:“I'm doing it!”

IBUKI:“Asuka's synch rate has been on a downward trend lately.”

22 C012.jpg

012

RITSUKO:“It's problematic, considering our tight situation.”

22 C013.jpg

013

RITSUKO:“Let's make Rei's Unit 00 our priority. Right now, we don't have the leeway to repair both at the same time.”

WOMAN (OFF):“Mitosis in Unit 02's left arm has cleared the target value.”

MAN (OFF):“Necrosis is currently under point zero five percent.”

WOMAN (OFF):“The apoptosis process is operating normally.”

Dr. Nick: Eva units surviving decapitations and head splittings might feel like some pretty gnarly body horror, but when you start thinking about it, it's not really that much worse than how the units are normally operated. The resident souls are usually dormant, and the bodies are quite literally puppeted around with raw electricity being fed to the muscles. It's just a fancier version of Volta's frog experiments, really.

WOMAN (OFF):“Unit 00's morphogenetic system is currently stable.”

MISATO (MONO):“The Eva series, born from Adam. We even have to make use of what caused the Second Impact in order for us to win against the Angels. Put it another way, in order to live, we will even use the thing that tried to wipe us out. I guess that's what humans do.”

MISATO (MONO):“In the end, maybe I do hate the Eva.”

MISATO:“My father's murderer...”

HYUGA (OFF):“Miss Katsuragi!”

22 C021.jpg

021

MISATO:“Construction of Evas up through Unit 13 has begun?”

22 022C.jpg

022

MISATO:“In seven different locations around the world?”

HYUGA:“This information came via Shanghai. The source can be trusted.”

MISATO:“Why are they rushing mass production at this stage?”

HYUGA:“We've lost two Evas in the past and two are currently heavily damaged. Perhaps they're rushing to reinforce our reserves with an eye towards the secondary preparations.”

MISATO:“I don't know. Even here, we're getting Germany to give us parts from Unit 05 and 06 that are being built there. There seems to be a lot of money changing hands lately.”

HYUGA:“Our budget was doubled since we came here after all. Do you suppose that just shows how desperate the higher-ups are?”

MISATO:“I sense a certain impatience on the part of the Committee.”

HYUGA:“Then are they anticipating a case where not single, but multiple Angels are deployed against us at once?”

MISATO:“Maybe, but there's no reason to do it unofficially.”

Dr. Nick: The bit about multiple Angels attacking at once harkens back to the Proposal's original final fight involving the "twelve strongest" Apostolos, while also foreshadowing the twist of the mass-produced units being deployed against Nerv.

22 C023.jpg

023

MISATO:“They must have some other objective in mind.”

Dr. Nick: Oh look, civilians. This added Director's Cut scene gives us a brief glimpse that Tokyo-3 is still an inhabited place, even though the plot is starting to be so deep and the original production so frayed that whatever above-surface normality is left is starting to lose all meaning.

The general fan consensus has always been that the DC additions are needed and worthwhile ones, and you'd be pretty hard-pressed to find a contrarian who thinks otherwise, but when you know what you're looking for, the transitions between the DC money shots and the by this point very, very limited original animation can feel lowkey janky.
