030

031

IBUKI:“As expected, it's not working. The code to eject the entry plug isn't being accepted.”

RITSUKO:“What about the backup and dummy signals?”

IBUKI:“They're being refused.”

032A

IBUKI (OFF):“We can't open a direct circuit either.”

032B

HYUGA:“We've connected to the plug's video monitor. Switching to the main monitor.”

033

034

MISATO:“What in the hell is this?”

035

RITSUKO (OFF):“This is the truth behind the 400% synch rate.”

MISATO (OFF):“I can't believe it. What in the world happened to Shinji?”

RITSUKO (OFF):“He's been taken into Eva Unit 01.”

UrsusArctos: The plugsuit appearing here is a straight-up goof, because the production crew forgot that Shinji was wearing his school clothes when he got into the Eva in the previous episode. The "pseudo-substantiating his plugsuit" line that comes in cut 058 was a hasty attempt to rectify the mistake.

Dr. Nick: This is such a fun bullshit science retcon - the show is basically fanwanking itself. But as much of a crude fix as it is, it does make weird amounts of sense. Like it or not, it's been established since episode 2 that with soul magic it is possible to reconstitute non-organic matter. Why does Shinji subconsciously "pseudo-substantiate" a plug suit for himself? Because at this point in time, being an Eva pilot is an important part of his self-image and sense of self-worth (see scenes 06 & 07 later in this episode). And of course, thanks to this convenient mechanism, the very final scene of EoE doesn't get derailed by Asuka being naked and Shinji wearing a post-apocalyptic loincloth.

036

MISATO:“What does that mean?! Just what is an Eva?!”

037

RITSUKO:“It is something created by man in man's own image. I really can't describe it any other way.”

038

MISATO:“Something created by man? Didn't you just copy what you found then at the South Pole? I'm sure the original would be appalled to hear this.”

UrsusArctos: The original's gray-haired bishonen avatar isn't exactly impressed by humanity copying his old body, but I suspect he'd be far wiser than Misato is at this point.

039

RITSUKO:“This is not just a copy, because it is imbued with a human will.”

040

MISATO:“Are you saying somebody willed this to happen as well?!”

UrsusArctos: Misato, in her rage, ignores how much information Ritsuko just gave her about the Evas.

041

RITSUKO:“It could be the Eva's...”

042

043

044

045

MISATO:“Do something, damn you!”

046

047

MISATO:“Do something, damn you! You created it, didn't you?! Take responsibility”

048

MISATO:“for it!”

049

050A

050B

RADIO:“On the issue of the Nansa Islands,”

051

RADIO:“the government has officially announced there is no federal involvement. In other news, it has been a month since the terrorist act in Tokyo-2,”

052

REI:“I am still alive.”

RADIO:“and the government has passed new legislation to prevent another.”

053A

053B

ASUKA (OFF):“I got that she made it, okay?!”

054

ASUKA (OFF):“Damn it, Misato, don't keep calling me over every little thing!”

055

ASUKA:“To think... to think I couldn't do anything! I can't believe I lost to that stupid Shinji!”

056

ASUKA:“I hate this!”

057A

Mr. Tines: One bit of Christian symbolism skipped ("On the third day...")

057B

MISATO (OFF):“A plan to salvage Shinji?”

057C

RITSUKO (OFF):“That's right. That which can be called Shinji's life”

058

RITSUKO:“still exists.”

MISATO:“Now you're respecting human life?”

RITSUKO:“We can't afford to lose Shinji right now.”

MISATO:“Well, I wonder? Isn't what Nerv wants not Shinji's life, but Unit 01 as its tool?”

RITSUKO:“I won't deny it.”

IBUKI:“We can surmise that Shinji's body lost its ego border, and he's floating in the entry plug in quantum form.”

MISATO:“In other words, Shinji has shifted into a form we can't see?”

IBUKI:“Yes, the composition of the LCL inside the plug has chemically altered into something very similar to the sea water of primitive Earth.”

MISATO:“A soup of life, huh?”

RITSUKO:“All of the substances which composed Shinji are still preserved in the plug, and what could be called his soul exists there as well. In fact, his self-image is pseudo- substantiating his plug suit.”

IBUKI:“In other words, salvaging him means reconstructing his body and anchoring his psyche within it.”

MISATO:“Is that possible?”

RITSUKO:“With the Magi's support, yes.”

MISATO:“Theoretically, right? You can't know what will happen until you try it.”

Dr. Nick: In this episode of Fullmetal Evangelion, Ritsuko breaks the human transmutation taboo.

UrsusArctos: The reference to how the composition of LCL inside the plug is now very similar to the sea water of primitive Earth is an early tip-off to observant viewers of how life on Earth came to be in Evangelion's setting, although it isn't until End of Evangelion that the whole thing comes together.
