Inside the rising elevator.

SE <<(elevator sound)>>

Ibuki gazes at the camera and speaks.

Her laptop is on the floor.

IBUKI:“Unit 01 has reached its activation limit!”

Misato and the others are beyond Ibuki’s head.

IBUKI (OFF):“its backup isn’t moving either!”

MISATO:“Shinji!”

Unit One’s eye has gone out.

The angel seizes its head with its arm.

Dr. Nick: Zeruel in turn channels Master Asia's towel tactics.

The angel easily lifts it up.

It is dark inside the plug.

Shinji is violently moving the induction levers, which clatter.

The angel pulls out its arm, which is sticking in Unit One’s chest.

SE <<(arm in motion)>>

UrsusArctos: Zeruel loosens the chest plate by stabbing it because he wants to shoot that spot and blow it off. Mr. Machismo is indeed clinical in his behavior.

306
After a short pause, red body fluid spouts out.

A flash! Unit One’s chest is blown off in a flashy explosion.

SE <<(explosion)>>

UrsusArctos: Except for the blast that hit Eva-01's arm, all of Zeruel's optical blasts set off explosions. Ramiel, in comparison, melted through targets with its beam, and any explosions from Ramiel's weapon were incidental rather than deliberate.

There’s wind from the explosion. Once it settles, Misato looks.

MISATO:“Ugh!”

Unit One’s chest, with the armor off of it.

SE <<(explosion noise)>>

SE <<(flames noise) until 312>>

309
Closer in; its chest is has a core just like the angel.
Dr. Nick: "I did it!"

UrsusArctos: Not "just like" the Angel. The core has two smaller "nucleolae" right below it and to the left and right, and the flesh surrounding the core is a paler color than the rest of the Eva (possibly derived directly from Lilith?). How exactly these alter Eva-01's functioning or change it over having a single large core remains a mystery. Although this is a direct indication that the Evas are far closer to the Angels than previously suggested, it's also something of an "I knew it!" moment for fans paying attention to Adam's design. Adam has been depicted with a core all along, so why shouldn't an Eva created from Adam have a core under that armor as well?

19 C310a.jpg

19 C310b.jpg

Misato grimaces her brow, Ritsuko is inside.

MISATO:“...That’s...?”

The angel, from below.

It extends its hand forward!

SE <<(flames)>>

19 C312a.jpg

19 C312c.jpg

19 C312e.jpg

312
The front of Unit One being still.

The angel strikes the core with its arm, sparks scatter and there are thuds!

SE <<(thuds)>>

It does so another time with its left hand!

UrsusArctos: As a tie in with Cut 062, the bone stump sticking out of Eva-01's left arm is a probable reference to Anno's father losing his left leg and having a stump of bone sticking out of it, and Anno's own statement about how he "can't love anything perfect" as a result. This changed in Rebuild 2.0, where Eva-01 loses its left arm but it appeared like a clean cut, which was a little odd. Of course, what happens to the lost arm in both is quite different too...

Mbryo: The durability of cores seem to fluctuate throughout the series. It's usually implied that they are made of sturdier material when compared to the rest of Angel(or Evangelion) bodies, seeing how it took multiple hits from Unit 01 to crack Sachiel's core in Episode 02. But in Episode 08, Gaghiel's core gets destroyed from a direct, close-range shot from the main battery guns of two warships. Powerful for conventional weapons, but probably much less destructive than the might of a berserk Eva unit or Zeruel's toilet paper arms. Perhaps exposed cores are naturally more durable than internal ones, which would make a lot of sense.

It strikes Unit One in succession.

It’s a straight image of rape.

In front. You can’t see his face, his hands stop, and furthermore, his head falls further and he shouts out seriously.

SHINJI:“If you don’t move now, if not now, then everyone will die! I can’t take more of this!, Please, move!!”

SEELE-01: I always considered the "I can’t take more of this!" line the one that starts the whole mess that follows. Something in the lines of Yui saying "dammit Gendo, I'm taking full custody!"

The picture turns black, then there’s a ring of light.

Light fades in inside it.

SE <<(harder heartbeat) (bleeds into next cut)>>

Mr. Tines: Eva-mega-evolution : WarShogouki!

UrsusArctos: This invokes the very first image of the opening and the flickering underwater light imagery that follows. The initial drop of water is symbolic of consciousness and is storyboarded in the opening as "the beginning of the universe", and the flickering light is associated with the first image of the world outside the womb. Put together, the awakening of Yui's consciousness within the Eva takes on the imagery of spiritual birth, or rebirth.

The color changes from orange to purple.

UrsusArctos: Purple is a color that is frequently used in the NTE movies to indicate a state of extreme power - and of course, is the color associated the most with Eva-01. As a side note, orange and purple are complementary colors in the subtractive color palette, so the change from orange to purple indicates a complete change in state, from inert to fully awake.
