218

ASUKA:“Hey, Shinji, do you want to kiss?”

219

SHINJI:“What?”

ASUKA:“A kiss. A kiss? You've never kissed, right?”

220

221

ASUKA:“Then, let's do it.”

222

SHINJI:“Why?”

223

ASUKA:“Because I'm bored.”

SHINJI:“Because you're bored?! But...”

ASUKA:“You don't want to kiss a girl on the anniversary of your mom's death? Afraid she may be watching you from Heaven?”

SHINJI:“Not really.”

224

ASUKA:“Or are you scared?”

UrsusArctos: Asuka looks a lot like Misato when she's teasing Shinji, and the oversized yellow T-shirt highlights the similarity between Asuka's teasing and Misato's teasing.

225

SHINJI:“I'm not scared of a little kiss!”

UrsusArctos: The pose is animated much like Cut 081 from the OP.

226

ASUKA:“You brushed your teeth, didn't you?”

Mr. Tines: What contrast here to the previous kiss.

227

228

ASUKA:“Then, here I go.”

229

230

231

ASUKA:“Don't breathe, because it tickles.”

232

Dr. Nick: Man, this really is the airway-obstruction room, isn't it?

233

234

235

dzzthink: In a Youtube comment of this scene, someone pointed out that Asuka's eyebrow becomes slightly crossed as she becomes more and more irritated by Shinji's passiveness (who can blame him). Watch here to see this more closely. Anyways, I just want to say this is one of the funniest scenes in the entire series.

UrsusArctos: It's funny, but it lands up being tragic since it destroys Shinji and Asuka's friendship. Shinji's passive, avoidant nature and curiosity about Rei have been a source of constant irritation for Asuka, but Asuka's teasing and harassment seem to take on the qualities of disdain, even hatred, after this point.

Mr. Tines: Yes, this is where the ship founders upon hidden reefs.

236

237

UrsusArctos: Pen-Pen's reaction - or rather, lack thereof - is what sells the comedy in this tragicomic scene.

238

239

thewayneiac: Eye shading to show mortification first appeared all the way back in Episode 01, when Shinji was refusing to pilot. [1]

240

UrsusArctos: The old ADV dub added a comical "bleeeech" that threw the tone of this scene off. As the shading in the previous cut shows, Asuka is genuinely mortified.

241

ASUKA (OFF):“Definitely not something to do to kill time!”

242

KAJI:“All right, here we are. Hang on.”

243

SHINJI:“Mr. Kaji!”

ASUKA:“What?! Mr. Kaji!”

UrsusArctos: Asuka's state of mortification is thrown off and replaced by even greater enthusiasm for Kaji's arrival than usual. She clearly expects to get something out of him after Shinji failed her so miserably.

244

UrsusArctos: The incredible mess surrounding Misato, worse than her usual slovenliness, spells out that "passed out drunk" isn't meant to be remotely dignified (and reflect her state of mind). However, Kaji and Shinji, being the considerate folks that they are, give her a measure of dignity by properly laying her down on her bed.

Mr. Tines: In close to a recovery position, against another bout of puking.

245

KAJI:“Well, I'll be leaving now.”

246

ASUKA:“Why don't you stay with us, Kaji?”

247

KAJI:“I'd be laughed at if I went to work in this.”

ASUKA:“It'll be okay.”

248

ASUKA:“Hey, c'mon, Mr. Kaji...”

KAJI:“Later.”

249

ASUKA:“He smelled of lavender...”

UrsusArctos: Asuka's expression isn't just one of defeat, it's one of contemplation. Misato refused to let Asuka use her lavender perfume saying "It's not for kids". Kaji smells of lavender, which doesn't just mean that Misato succeeded in gaining his affection where Asuka failed - it ties to the aircraft carrier scene in Episode 22' where Asuka demands that Kaji acknowledge her as an adult. She hasn't just lost Kaji to Misato, she's lost any chance of being acknowledged as an adult.

250

KAJI:“Please take care of Katsuragi.”

SHINJI (OFF):“Sure.”

KAJI:“Well, 'night.”

SHINJI (OFF):“Good night.”

251A

SHINJI:“What's wrong? You look down.”

ASUKA:“It's because I kissed you!”
