IKARI:“It's been three years since the last time we came here together.”

SHINJI:“I ran away then, and haven't been back since. It just hasn't sunk in that Mother is resting here. I don't even remember her face.”

Dr. Nick: While Shinji gets called a wuss to an unreasonable degree, for better or for worse (for worse - see EoE) there's also a strong bull-headed streak to him, considering how he ran away from home at age 11 and stuck with it. This is reinforced in the very next scene with a milder version of the same, him sticking with his cello playing. Like Asuka says, "perseverance is power". It's a trait he clearly got from both of his parents.

IKARI:“Man survives by forgetting his memories,”

IKARI:“but there are some things a man should never forget. Yui taught me about the irreplaceable things. I come here to confirm that.”

SHINJI:“You have no pictures of her?”

IKARI:“There are none left. This grave is just a decoration too. There's no corpse.”

SHINJI:“So, the teacher was right. You threw them all away.”

IKARI (OFF):“I keep everything in my heart.”

IKARI:“That is enough for now.”

Mr. Tines: The relationship between Rei and Gendo is a strange one. As we've seen, and been reminded, she both disavows any insight into him, yet manages to speak with him in a way that cheers both of them. Is this actually something closer to the relationship of a man and his faithful hound?

UrsusArctos: That may be a very fitting analogy from an emotional standpoint. Rei appears aware that she is capable of cheering Gendo up but is incapable of comprehending why or how, not unlike a pet dog or cat in that sense. I doubt this is what either Gendo or Rei intended their relationship to be, but it seems like the best they can do since they both have horribly damaged psyches, and given that Rei's soul comes from Lilith there's a fundamentally alien part of her too.

SHINJI:“Um, I'm glad I got to talk to you today.”

dzzthink: The image of Rei seems to spark Shinji's response to reach out to Gendo. Again, the complications of their dynamic are clear, Shinji wants to know Gendo more, Rei seems to know more about Gendo.
