044

IBUKI (OFF):“Necrosis operation complete.”

thewayneiac: Necrosis? Isn't that usually a bad thing?

045

RITSUKO (OFF):“What are you going”

MAN (OFF):“Graph measurement complete.”

046

RITSUKO:“to wear tomorrow?”

MISATO:“Oh, to the wedding? I wore the pink suit for Kiyomi's wedding, and the dark blue dress for Kotoko's just the other day.”

WOMAN (OFF):“Synch rate is normal.”

UrsusArctos: As noted in the Character Name Origins page, Misato's name comes from Minako Narita's manga Aitsu. Misato Izumi from Aitsu is a girl who meets two high-performing upperclassmen (one of whom is named Ryoji Sawada, Kaji's namesake) and thus learns how to follow her dreams and dedicate herself to astronomy. I strongly suspect that Kiyomi and Kotoko are from Aitsu too but haven't been able to confirm it because it hasn't been translated into English.

047

RITSUKO:“What about the orange one? You haven't worn that one lately, have you?”

048

MISATO:“Well, there's a reason for that.”

RITSUKO (OFF):“It's too tight?”

MISATO:“Yeah, so what?! Should I get a new one on the way home?”

049

MISATO (OFF):“It's an extra expense.”

RITSUKO:“We've been invited to so many weddings lately, the cost of all the gifts is starting to add up.”

UrsusArctos: Although she's talking about her perpetually dire financial situation, it somehow seems far better than in Episode 12 with its Ramen Shop celebratory dinner. She does get to go to a pretty snazzy place later in the episode too, although going to snazzy places every time a friend is married is bound to add up to a significant expense. The Japanese culture around gift-giving is very different from that in the west and gifts of a given value and class are obligatory for a number of social events, which doesn't help.

050

MISATO:“Everyone's just rushing to get married before they're thirty.”

UrsusArctos: Since the real-life marriage age for most Japanese couples shifted into the 30s during the mid-late 2010s, Misato's comment has become kind of a relic of the era it was made in.

051

RITSUKO:“No one wants to be the last one still single. That's enough, you three.”

052

RITSUKO (OFF):“Good work.”

ASUKA (OFF):“All these stupid tests are boring!”

053

RITSUKO (OFF):“By the way,”

054-055

056

RITSUKO:“Shinji looks even more downcast than usual today.”

MISATO:“That's because of tomorrow.”

RITSUKO:“Yes, tomorrow.”

057

SHINJI (OFF):“Tomorrow,”

058

SHINJI:“I have to see my father. What should I talk to him about?”

REI:“Why do you ask me?”

059

SHINJI:“Because I once saw you talking happily with him.”

060

061

SHINJI:“Say, what kind of person is my father?”

REI:“I don't know.”

SHINJI:“I see.”

062

REI:“You've been looking at me all afternoon because you wanted to ask me that?”

SHINJI:“When we were cleaning today, you were wringing out the cloth, remember? The way you did it was like a mother.”

UrsusArctos: Even though Rei knows Shinji a lot better now, she doesn't care much in the way of social interaction, or asking Shinji why he kept looking at her oddly. I don't understand what it was about wringing the cloth that made Shinji think of a mother, but whatever the association was, it seems to have hit a nerve here.

063

REI:“A mother?”

064

065

SHINJI (OFF):“I thought”

066

SHINJI (OFF):“it was like a mother. Maybe you'd be really good at being a housewife, Ayanami.”

UrsusArctos: Is Rei visibly embarrassed because Shinji's comment is so reactionary, or is it because she's missing the maternal part of Lilith's soul and can't understand him? (I wonder whether Shinji would think of her as maternal if he saw her old body at the end of this episode...)

thewayneiac: The way she's reacting makes it seem more like she thinks he's suggesting she be the mother of his children.

UrsusArctos: ...*pukes silently*

067

068

REI:“What are you saying?!”

dzzthink: Rei seems again confused about Shinji's statement, despite being neutral about the way he was staring at her earlier. This goes to show she does care about how Shinji perceives her or is just shocked that anyone would care to consider her as anything other than an Eva pilot. There are many interpretations for this scene, such as Rei being somewhat aware and scared that she is a clone of Shinji's mom. I guess at this point in the series we don't know about this truth yet, and so Anno revels in throwing these hints at the viewer. People who rewatch this scene must laugh to themselves.
