105

106

MISATO:“Was this somehow related to the earlier berserk incident when Rei was the pilot?”

RITSUKO:“I can't tell you anything right now. I only know we must reconfigure Unit 00 for Rei's personal data, and run a new synch test between them as soon as possible.”

MISATO:“As Chief of Operations, I ask that you do so as soon as possible, before it impacts our work.”

RITSUKO:“I know, Major Katsuragi.”

107

108

RITSUKO (MONO):“The person Unit 00 wanted to hit was me. I'm sure of it.”

Dr. Nick: During the classic era of theorycrafting on western fan forums, when the details of the applied metaphysics and soul manipulation hadn't yet been hashed out, the soul of Unit-00 was one of the biggest topics of discussion. In hindsight and with the benefit of a lot more translated materials it might seem obvious that it's Rei I in there, but the Naoko camp latched onto this particular line as evidence supporting their position, and completely pointless amounts of digital ink got spilled as a result.

109

110

WOMAN (RADIO - OFF):“And now the next contestant for the World's Most Amazing Exhibition is, Math Puppy!”

MAN (RADIO - OFF):“Wow, that sounds awesome!”

WOMAN (RADIO - OFF):“Here we go, math genius puppy, Kana, from Niigata!”

PUPPY (RADIO - OFF):“Wan!”

WOMAN (RADIO - OFF):“He sounds good. Do you understand me?”

PUPPY (RADIO - OFF):“Wan!”

WOMAN (RADIO - OFF):“Oh, right. Now let's ask him.”

PUPPY (RADIO - OFF):“Wan!”

WOMAN (RADIO - OFF):“What is”

111

WOMAN (RADIO - OFF):“325 minus 324?”

112

SHINJI:“I hate it. It's this ceiling again.”

PUPPY (RADIO - OFF):“Wan!”

WOMAN (RADIO - OFF):“That's amazing! He's correct!”

113

114

HYUGA:“Shinji has regained consciousness. No signs of mental contamination.”

115

HYUGA (OFF):“He doesn't appear to remember anything.”

MISATO:“I see.”

116

RADIO:“Hi! I'm doing fine,”

117

ASUKA (MONO):“Misato and Mr. Kaji won't tell me,”

RADIO:“but the world is worrisome due to terrorism in the Nansa Islands.”

118

ASUKA:“and Shinji doesn't even know.”

ASUKA:“Just what kind of girl is the First Child?”

RADIO:“This year long heat creates some crazy bastards, you know?”

RADIO:“What I can't stand is those suicidal idiots that involve innocent people!”

119

120

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“The Angel invasion that deviated from the plan.”

TEXT:“Knight”

dzzthink: Oh, seems like this is referenced in Rebuild 3.33 later. Didn't notice before.

UrsusArctos: That's right, Fuyutsuki is playing shogi, the Japanese counterpart to chess, and that piece is the knight, which, unless I'm mistaken, is the same piece we see him move in his game with Shinji in 3.0. He goes from acting out scenarios in a book to actually playing a game with Shinji, which is an interesting transition on a meta-level.

121

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“So the Human Instrumentality Committee is taking advantage of having learned of it.”

UrsusArctos: This is a reference to last episode's incident with Ireul and not Gaghiel, or the Committee really would be going after Gendo's head. This may have been the work of Kaji, who saw Ireul with his own eyes while snooping around, or one of the other Seele agents implicitly working within Nerv.

122

FUYUTSUKI:“Though they're just worthless fools whose job is to do nothing but complain.”

UrsusArctos: After hearing their endless grumbling and incredibly petty complaints, many viewers probably feel exactly the same way as Fuyutsuki.

123

IKARI:“We hold all the trump cards. There is nothing they can do.”

UrsusArctos: Despite Gendo's confidence, Seele do have ways of getting back at him, as things prove. Interestingly, with Fuyutsuki reading his shogi handbook and playing alone and Gendo in his usual pose, both men have put up their A.T. Fields against each other despite being at the same table.

124

FUYUTSUKI:“Still, that doesn't mean we should provoke them. If Seele starts interfering now, it'll be trouble, in more ways than one.”

IKARI:“Everything is going according to our script. There is no problem.”

FUYUTSUKI:“What about the Unit 00 accident? That wasn't in my script.”

IKARI:“It is no obstacle. The re-synchronization test for Rei and Unit 00 was successful.”

UrsusArctos: The word that the platinum subtitles (used here) render as "script" is actually the English word "scenario". It makes little sense to change it, since "scenario" in the original Italian is synonymous with a script in the sense of a theater, movie or TV script, in addition to having the meaning of "the outline or model of an expected sequence of events", which is very much what is going on here. c.f. the use of "scenario planning" in business. Besides, "Everything is proceeding according to our scenario" just sounds cooler.

125

FUYUTSUKI (MONO):“Ikari is too concerned about Rei.”

126

FUYUTSUKI:“What is the status of the Adam Project?”

IKARI:“Proceeding smoothly. It's not even two percent behind schedule.”

127

FUYUTSUKI:“Then, the Lance of Longinus is...”

UrsusArctos: Please excuse the use of the old subs here. The correct term for the object in question is Spear of Longinus, confirmed in End of Evangelion.

128

IKARI:“It's going as planned. Rei is carrying out the operation.”

130

dzzthink: Rei descending to work on an operation involving Adam and the Lance of Longinus?

UrsusArctos: You mean "Rei descending to work on an operation involving Lilith and the Spear of Longinus", don't you? ;;> The use of "Adam" constitutes an Evangelion-sized red herring, but there's no point in pretending that she's working on anything other than Lilith, that secret's been out a good 25 years. Whether the real Adam is in that briefcase or somewhere else (*cough, cough*) at this moment is an open question.

Dr. Nick: Here we are also getting into those lore parts that have always remained quite murky, i.e. what are the exact "recipes" for the 3I scenarios desired by Gendo and Seele respectively, and how do they differ in specifics. We know that the spears are security devices for subduing progenitor entities, but that's about it. So what purpose does it serve to have Rei skewer Lilith's soulless body at this juncture?
