209

RITSUKO (OFF):“We can think of them as micro-machines.”

13 C210a.jpg

13 C210b.jpg

210

RITSUKO (OFF):“Angels the size of microbes.”

UrsusArctos: The originally aired images for cut 210 were far brighter (210a and 210b). Interesting how the camera has a pentagonal aperture.

13 C211a.jpg

13 C211b.jpg

211

RITSUKO:“Those individuals have aggregated together and have undergone explosive evolution to achieve intelligence circuits in this short amount of time.”

FUYUTSUKI:“Evolution...”

RITSUKO:“Yes.”

13 C212.jpg

212

RITSUKO:“They're continuously changing themselves, searching for a system that can cope with any situation.”

13 C213.jpg

213

FUYUTSUKI:“That's truly the system of life itself.”

13 C214a.jpg

13 C214b.jpg

214

MISATO:“Against an enemy that evolves to overcome its weaknesses, the only effective countermeasure is to eliminate the host and let the parasite die with it. We have no choice but to have it die with the Magi.”

UrsusArctos: This is an extremely stupid idea, given that the Angel physically exists outside the Magi and is capable of incredibly rapid evolution. Destroying the Magi would simply free the Angel to take a whole new form with which to attack them.

13 C215a.jpg

13 C215b.jpg

215

MISATO:“I propose the physical elimination of the Magi.”

13 C216a.jpg

13 C216b.jpg

216

RITSUKO:“That's impossible. Destroying the Magi is tantamount to destroying headquarters itself.”

13 C217a.jpg

13 C217b.jpg

217

MISATO:“Then I officially request it on behalf of the Operations Division.”

13 C218.jpg

218

RITSUKO:“I refuse. This is a matter for the Technology Department.”

13 C219.jpg

219

MISATO:“Why are you being so mule-headed?!”

dzzthink: Misato's suggestions seem pretty outlandish and bullheaded (not even bothering to consider any other suggestions). It seems like the last possible option would be to destroy Magi, considering its importance to running everything.

13 C220a.jpg

13 C220b.jpg

13 C220c.jpg

220

RITSUKO:“This situation is a result of my carelessness.”

13 C221a.jpg

13 C221b.jpg

13 C221c.jpg

221

MISATO:“You've always been like this. You always take the responsibility on your own shoulders”

13 C222a.jpg

13 C222b.jpg

222

MISATO (OFF):“and won't depend on others.”

RITSUKO:“If the Angel keeps evolving, we have a chance.”

13 C223a.jpg

13 C223b.jpg

223

IKARI:“Expedite its evolution?”

RITSUKO:“Yes.”

IKARI:“The end of evolution is self-destruction. Death itself.”

FUYUTSUKI:“Thus, we just need to accelerate its evolution.”

RITSUKO:“If the Angel considers it the only practical means of survival, it may choose to co-exist with the Magi system.”

UrsusArctos: The way the characters are standing and looking down at the display is very visually reminiscent of similar scenes in Uchuu Senkan Yamato. As noted in Episode 06 Cut 065 Anno is a huge Yamato fan so this was almost certainly a Yamato homage.

Dr. Nick: The bulkhead-closing action in this episode is also very Yamato-esque. Of course, whenever Nerv's strategy meetings make use of those huge floor displays, that's likely referencing the original Mobile Suit Gundam instead.

Zusuchan: The whole "end of evolution is self-destruction" idea bandied about by Gendo and Fuyutsuki seems weird and needlessly bleak, since they seem to think that evolution's end and an organism's subsequent death are both inevitable. Still, I'm pretty sure people and animals and so on don't die once they've stopped biologically evolving (and the end of intellectual evolution is only an intellectual, metaphorical death rather than physiological), so I'd argue both Gendo and Fuyutsuki are quite wrong here.

13 C224a.jpg

13 C224b.jpg

224

HYUGA:“But how?”

13 C225a.jpg

13 C225b.jpg

225

RITSUKO:“If the target is a computer itself,”

13 C226a.jpg

13 C226b.jpg

226

RITSUKO (OFF):“we can counter-hack it by”

TEXT:“Submitted Resolving Processing”

13 C227.jpg

227

RITSUKO (OFF):“connecting Casper to the Angel and uploading a self-destruct acceleration program, but...”

IBUKI:“At the same time, we'll be turning off the barrier to the Angel.”

13 C228.jpg

228

IKARI:“So it would be a battle of speed between Casper and the Angel.”

13 C229.jpg

229

RITSUKO:“Yes.”

13 C230.jpg

230

MISATO:“That program had better make it on time. If Casper is contaminated as well, it'll all be over.”

13 C231a.jpg

13 C231b.jpg

231

RITSUKO:“I'll keep my promise.”

13 C232a.jpg

13 C232b.jpg

13 C232c.jpg

232

ANNOUNCEMENT:“Alert R issued! Alert R issued! An emergency has occurred”

Mr. Tines: It looks like the module where they are assembling is also the module Naoko splattered with her blood.

UrsusArctos: They're gathering around Caspar, but the Magi that Naoko splattered with her blood was the central one, Balthasar.

13 C233a.jpg

13 C233b.jpg

13 C233c.jpg

233

ANNOUNCEMENT:“in Nerv Headquarters. All D-class personnel”

13 C234a.jpg

13 C234b.jpg

13 C234c.jpg

234

ANNOUNCEMENT:“must evacuate.”

13 C237a.jpg

13 C237b.jpg

13 C237c.jpg

237

IBUKI:“What is all this?”

13 C238a.jpg

13 C239a.jpg

13 C239b.jpg

13 C239c.jpg

239

RITSUKO:“Scribbles left by the developer.”

IBUKI:“Amazing! These are back doors! Magi's back doors!”

13 C240a.jpg

13 C240b.jpg

240

MISATO (OFF):“So it's a veritable encyclopedia of all the tricks up the Magi's sleeve.”

IBUKI:“Is it okay to see these? What a surprise!”

13 C241a.jpg

13 C241b.jpg

241

IBUKI (OFF):“This is INT-C!”

13 C242.jpg

242

IBUKI:“With these we can program much faster than we thought, right, Ma'am?”

13 C243a.jpg

13 C243b.jpg

243

13 C244.jpg

244

RITSUKO (OFF):“Thank you, Mother. We can make it for sure now.”

TEXT:“Ikari, you jerk!”

dzzthink: Huh, interesting that Naoko left a scribble cursing Ikari. Seems like their relationship was quite tenuous at times, with Naoko hiding many grievances and bitterness.
