This is the area that's deteriorating.” FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“The 87th protein wall...” TEXT:“Sigma Unit D-17 87th Protein Wall”	UrsusArctos: Here's our first big sign that something's wrong. Of course, this turns out to be the first sign of the Angel's entry. Andromeda came in on a satellite, while Ireul seems to have...hitched a ride on wall paneling? As an aside, I notice that the number 17 seems to turn up a lot in Evangelion. Mr. Tines: D-17 was an emergency order last time. dzzthink: Much like the religious references, this scientific mumbo jumbo is appreciated by those familiar with the terms but also sounds excessive and confusing. These biological terms all seem to describe the genetic material and structure of bacteria. A Pribnow box is a section of the bacterial DNA where proteins can bind and transcribe DNA into RNA, which can be used to encode different proteins. The sigma unit or 'sigma factor' is one of the proteins that bind to DNA to make RNA. Genetic change or mutations is the main precursor to evolution, especially for diseases and pathogens wanting to evade their host's immune response. This is all similar to what Ireul does later on in a very pathogenic way. Given the variants we are facing during Covid-19, this episode is quite relevant.
	040	AOBA:“With magnification, you can see something that looks like stains. I wonder what they could be?” HYUGA:“It's got to be corrosion. There are slight variations in the temperature and conduction rates. Deterioration of sterilized rooms is happening a lot lately.” AOBA:“The construction schedule was cut by about sixty days, so there were probably some air bubbles mixed in again. The construction of B Wing is just sloppy.” FUYUTSUKI:“It was built after the Angels appeared, after all.” HYUGA:“It's not surprising.”	UrsusArctos: In Andromeda, they knew they were dealing with an alien microbe from the get-go. Here, they don't even know what they're looking at. The "deterioration of sterilized rooms" line is a one-off, since we barely see anything related to sterilization in the rest of the series (and it does make one wonder if Nerv is a whole lot sloppier than it should be). dzzthink: It is quite puzzling how the Angels appear out of nowhere, even materialising from the walls in a relatively secure base. Maybe the Angel already targeted the site before and introduced itself as a contaminant during the construction of B Wing. UrsusArctos: Evangelion never provides a clear answer to most questions, and in this case a viewer can plainly infer that the Angel entered through an air bubble mixed into the concrete due to sloppy construction. Reserve that question for Angels that appear out of orbit (Sahaquiel, Arael) or literally out of nowhere (Leliel).
	041	HYUGA (OFF):“Everyone's exhausted.” FUYUTSUKI:“Take care of it by tomorrow. Otherwise we'll never hear the end of it from Ikari.” HYUGA (OFF):“Roger.”
	042		UrsusArctos: Ireul's initial growth pattern here reminds me of the radio map of the Milky Way, complete with the North Polar Spur. It might be a coincidence, or it might be, like the rest of this episode, an oblique hint at the origins of the Angels. dzzthink: The composition of Ireul is quite different compared to the organic angels we see in the series, and I suspect it might be made out of a highly coordinated system of nanobots, or some kind of hybrid of biological and computerised material. Frames 209 and 210 calls these things micro-machines.
	043	RITSUKO:“Another water leak?”
	044	IBUKI:“No, it's apparently some kind of corrosion in the protein wall above us.” RITSUKO:“Wonderful. Any effect on this test?” IBUKI:“No, not at the moment.”
	045	RITSUKO:“Then, let's continue. We can't abort this test over minor technical issues. We'd never hear the end of it from Commander Ikari.” IBUKI (OFF):“Roger.”	UrsusArctos: Fuyutsuki and Ritsuko both use nearly identical phrasing here, and it's somewhat strange. While I completely imagine Gendo being his usual harsh, blunt, and unforgiving self about something like this, I don't see him as the type to be a persistent complainer.
	046	IBUKI (OFF):“Synchronization value is nominal.” MAN (OFF):“No changes to plug signals.” MAN (OFF):“Connecting the simulation plugs to the Evas via the simulation bodies.” MAN (OFF):“Contact with Eva Unit 00 has been confirmed.”	UrsusArctos: Berserker had an interesting suggestion about this test.
	047	WOMAN (OFF):“AT Field will be generated”
	048	WOMAN (OFF):“at output of 2 yocto.”	Mr. Tines: Yocto is the SI prefix for 1E-24 (1 septillionth) : implication is that AT fields have some interesting dynamic ranges.
	049		UrsusArctos: The red glow is visually reminiscent of our first shadowy glimpse of Gaghiel with glowing red lights in Episode 08 Cut 064. This is probably the point at which a first-time viewer realizes that what they're looking at is an Angel, beyond all doubt.

	052	WOMAN (OFF):“We've got a contamination alert on Floor A in the Sigma unit.” MAN (OFF):“The 87th protein wall is corroding and releasing heat.” MAN (OFF):“Abnormality detected in pipe six as well.”
	053	IBUKI:“Corrosion area of the protein wall increasing!”
	054	IBUKI (OFF):“At an explosive rate!”	UrsusArctos: Given that Nerv has biologists on staff and fights a xenobiological threat, it beats me why they didn't immediately associate the explosive growth of the corrosion with a biological process and not a chemical one.
	055	RITSUKO:“Abort the experiment. Initiate emergency shutoff of the sixth pipe.”
	056	IBUKI:“Yes, Ma'am!” TEXT:“Close All”
	057	TEXT:“Emergency Closure”	UrsusArctos: We get to see cuts 057 and 058 recycled later with red lighting, and again in Episode 25' of End of Evangelion. Speaking of End of Evangelion, we'll see a lot of things that happen in Episode 13 that have tremendous narrative significance in Episode 25'.

	059	MAN:“Numbers 60, 38 and 39 are all closed.” MAN:“Corrosion has occurred in 6-42.”
	060	IBUKI:“No effect! Corrosion is spreading along the walls.”
	061	RITSUKO:“Prepare the polysomes.”	UrsusArctos: In biology, a polysome is a group of ribosomes bound to an mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) molecule to translate mRNA instructions for protein synthesis. Naming their laser-equipped ROVs after them is just another instance of Nerv gratuitously using real-world biological terms.

	063	RITSUKO (OFF):“Set laser power at maximum.”	UrsusArctos: Seen from behind, the polysomes resemble the ubiquitous Nerv VTOL in basic design, and turn out to be just as useless. Laser rust removal is a real thing, it turns out, but using lasers to zap corrosion caused by an unknown agent is pretty nonsensical.
