001

WOMAN (OFF):“Apoptosis work for the three Evas will be performed as scheduled as soon as the Magi system is reactivated.”

UrsusArctos: So begins the cold open to one of the most underrated episodes of Evangelion. From what I've seen, Episode 13 is either ranked among Evangelion's worst episodes or treated as a middling episode at best, when it packs in more of NGE's backstory than any other episode prior to Episode 21 and ties in directly to EoE's Episode 25'. It's also a long, subtle homage to Michael Crichton's 1969 novel The Andromeda Strain and the 1971 film version by Robert Wise, so expect me to bring it up a lot. Incidentally, the term "Apoptosis" mentioned in the supplemental dialogue refers to a process of controlled cell death.

Zusuchan: Totally agree re: this episode being underrated. It was surprising for me to see it either disliked or treated as a very "meh" work when I first became involved with the larger Eva fandom.

002

HYUGA (OFF):“Command has granted approval.”

MAN (OFF):“Operation confirmed. 450 through 670 omitted.”

003

RITSUKO:“Way to go, Maya. That was fast.”

IBUKI:“Of course, you're the one who trained me.”

RITSUKO:“Wait a second, A-8 would be faster there. Let me see that.”

004

UrsusArctos: I have no idea if that's meant to be a DVORAK keyboard instead of the usual QWERTY. Ritsuko being able to beat Maya using only her right hand on a QWERTY keyboard (whose keys are deliberately arranged to slow down typing and deliberately favor the left hand) seems rather excessive even for a person of Ritsuko's world-class abilities.

Mr. Tines: The good old "l33t h4kr means frantic typing speed" meme. If it's good enough for Ghost in the Shell...

005

IBUKI:“Impressive as ever, Ma'am!”

006

MISATO:“How's it going? Are you finished giving the Magi their check-up?”

RITSUKO:“Pretty much. As promised, we made it in time for today's tests.”

MISATO:“That's”

007

MISATO (OFF):“my Ritsuko. Considering”

008

MISATO:“it's a tough job with three of them.”

RITSUKO:“That one's cold.”

009

TEXT:“Regular Screening Under Inspection Done”

010

IBUKI (OFF):“127th routine maintenance, all normal.”

RITSUKO (OFF):“Roger. Good work. Everyone, take a break until the tests begin.”

MAN (OFF):“All three Magi systems have entered self-diagnostic mode.”

011

012

RITSUKO (MONO):“Everything checked out. As usual, Mother's in good shape, but... Is getting older the only thing I'm going to do?”

UrsusArctos: So much about Ritsuko, her mother, and the Magi is packed into just one sentence. Note the attention to detail: Ritsuko's mole under her left eye is correctly reversed as it would be if she was looking into a mirror.

Title1

SUBTITLE:“Episode #13 Angel Invasion”

UrsusArctos: This super-straightforward title fits perfectly, but it kind of kills any mystery or suspense about the mysterious growth seen later.

013

ASUKA (OFF):“What? You want me to take off my clothes again?”

RITSUKO (OFF):“The next chamber is an ultra-clean room environment. Just taking a shower and changing your undergarments is insufficient.”

ASUKA (OFF):“Why do I have to go through all this for a simple autopilot test?”

UrsusArctos: Those three are lucky they're not in Crichton's Wildfire facility, in which the decontamination period could last from 6 to 12 hours!

014

RITSUKO (OFF):“Time isn't just passing us by. The technology of the Evas is making progress as well. We constantly need new data.”

UrsusArctos: The Evas, it turns out later, are far less technologically dependent than one would expect. In hindsight, it seems very likely that that the technology referred to is actually the Dummy Plug.

Dr. Nick: That's one major mecha trope that NGE avoids: there's no gaudy mid-series upgrade, not even an armor upgrade à la Tekkaman Blade's blaster form.

015

016

ASUKA:“All right, here I am, just the way you wanted, after being run through the wash cycle seventeen times.”

UrsusArctos: They seem to have run with this line and made it literal in Evangelion 2.0 where the decontamination procedure actually makes them look like clothes in a washing machine. Thankfully, we're spared such nonsense here.

Zusuchan: How dare you refer to Anno's greatest achievement, NTE's greatest moment, Kino(TM) at its best as "nonsense"? Really, old people are weird. /s

017

RITSUKO (OFF):“Now, I want all three of you to stay that way as you walk through the room and board the entry plug.”

018

ASUKA:“What?!”

RITSUKO (OFF):“Don't worry. The video monitors have been shut off. Your privacy is protected.”

ASUKA:“That isn't the point! It's an emotional thing!”

UrsusArctos: This provides one of the rare shots of Asuka in profile without her interface headset. As an aside, couldn't they have some sort of sterile towel or blanket so the three of them wouldn't have to walk side-by-side naked, and spare them all the intense embarrassment/ickiness of this situation?

Dr. Nick: I would assume Asuka forced Shinji to walk through the corridor first, without any backward glances.

019

RITSUKO (OFF):“This test's purpose is to remove the support of your plug suits and conduct harmonics directly from your bodies.”

MISATO (OFF):“Asuka, that's an order.”

ASUKA (OFF):“Oh, fine! Don't you dare peek!”

UrsusArctos: The red light turning ON, instead of OFF, gives the very, very creepy impression that their privacy is not being protected. Creepiness aside, it's interesting to see how Ritsuko rationally explains the need for the situation while Misato (who knows Asuka far better) cuts to the chase by making it an order.

020

MAN (OFF):“All pilots are ready for entry.”

UrsusArctos: Shinji has "seatbelt" mode activated even though he's not in an actual Eva, which very handily serves to provide the necessary censorship for the scene.

021

RITSUKO:“Start the test.”

022

MAN (OFF):“Beginning the test. Initiate autopilot recording.”

WOMAN (OFF):“Monitors, nominal.”

MAN (OFF):“Inserting simulation plugs.”

023

024

WOMAN (OFF):“Connecting simulation bodies to the system.”

Dr. Nick: What with the simulation bodies and artificial brains, this episode is also a showcase of unnerving low-key body horror.

025

IBUKI (OFF):“The simulation plugs are now under the Magi's control.”

MISATO:“Wow, this is going really fast! Thank goodness for the Magi. It's hard to believe that the first experiment took a whole week.”

MAN (OFF):“The test is scheduled to end in approximately three hours.”

026

RITSUKO (OFF):“How does it feel?”

027

REI:“It's a little different.”

028

SHINJI:“Yes, I think it's different than usual.”

029

ASUKA:“The sensations are kind of weird. My right arm is all I can feel clearly. Everything else is fuzzy.”

030

RITSUKO (OFF):“Rei, imagine moving your right hand.”

REI:“Yes, Ma'am.”

031

032

033

RITSUKO:“There don't seem to be any problems so far. Return the Magi to their normal state.”

MAN (OFF):“Data collection is proceeding smoothly.”

034

MISATO:“A dilemma...”

TEXT:“Resolving Processing”

Mr. Tines: Presumably, there are no discernable Easter Eggs in the screen text of this sequence.

035

RITSUKO:“You can sure see the creator's personality, can't you?”

MISATO:“What are you talking about? You're the one who created them, right?”

RITSUKO:“You don't know anything, do you?”

MISATO:“That's because you don't babble about yourself like I do, Ritsuko!”

RITSUKO:“That's true.”

UrsusArctos: That exchange seems rather rude. Plot convenience aside, it makes me wonder why Misato didn't ask Ritsuko about creating the Magi system sooner than this? Or how she didn't know that the Magi were created by Naoko to begin with, since Episode 21 suggests that Naoko's involvement with Gehirn was public knowledge?

036

RITSUKO:“I just brought the system up. The one who developed the fundamental theory and the mainframe”

037

RITSUKO (OFF):“was my mother.”
