IBUKI (OFF):“The main power supply has been interrupted.”

IBUKI:“Voltage level is zero!”

11 056b.jpg

11 056c.jpg

056

RITSUKO:“It wasn't me.”

Mr. Tines: The "... this time" goes without saying. You can't be a real nutty scientist without your fair share of gadgets arcing to failure along the way.

11 057a.jpg

11 057b.jpg

057

KAJI:“What do you think?”

MISATO:“Well, it'll switch to the backup power supply soon.”

11 058.jpg

058

AOBA:“It's no good, the backup circuits aren't connecting.”

11 059a.jpg

11 059b.jpg

11 059c.jpg

059

FUYUTSUKI:“That can't be! Which circuits are still functioning?”

11 060a.jpg

11 060b.jpg

060

FUYUTSUKI:“Route all remaining power supplies to maintaining the Magi and Central Dogma.”

OPERATOR:“A total of one point two percent! Only the old circuits from number 2567!”

11 061.jpg

11 061b.jpg

11 061c.jpg

061

AOBA:“But that will interfere with life support systems.”

FUYUTSUKI:“I don't care! That's our top priority!”

Dr. Nick: A pretty cold reminder of how high the stakes are.

WOMAN (OFF):“Aiming for a politics that everyone can love,”

11 063.jpg

063

HYUGA:“Boy, she's such a lazy slob.”

WOMAN (OFF):“with justice and truth...”

Mr. Tines: Clearly he has never visited Misato at home, however much of a torch he holds for her.

UrsusArctos: He evidently hasn't tasted her "cooking" either!

11 064a.jpg

11 064b.jpg

064

HYUGA:“Can't Captain Katsuragi at least pick up her own laundry?”

thewayneiac: How domesticated he is. (Note, there was a time when the fanbase thought that Misato was sleeping with every guy is this show; that time is thankfully past. So he probably isn't even getting any benefits for this service.)

HYUGA:“What?”

11 066a.jpg

11 066b.jpg

066

ASUKA:“Maybe Commander Ikari was just really busy?”

SHINJI:“I don't know... It wasn't like he hung up, but more like a mechanical failure.”

dzzthink: I like the lighting effect and shimmering heat waves in this shot.

UrsusArctos: Yes, they're a neat touch. Combined with the ever-present cicada screeches they are yet another subtle sign that Japan is in perpetual summer post-2I. The lettering indicating the presence of an Evangelion power socket is another great little instance of attention to detail.

11 067Aa.jpg

11 067Ab.jpg

067A

ASUKA:“You know, you ARE a man. Why don't you stop worrying”

11 067B.jpg

067B

ASUKA (OFF):“about every little detail?”

UrsusArctos: Asuka's sexist statement misses the point. Shinji doesn't worry about the details, he cares about them. And it looks like Rei understands the difference.

11 078c.jpg

11 078d.jpg

11 078e.jpg

11 078f.jpg

078

UrsusArctos: The male technicians do all the physical work and collapse in an undignified heap, while both women gracefully walk through without asking "are you OK?" or even glancing at them. In real life it would be callous to the point of sociopathy, but the way this is framed turns it into slapstick comedy of sorts.

Mr. Tines: Rank hath its privileges.

11 079.jpg

079

RITSUKO:“Anyway, let's hurry to the command center. It's already been down for seven minutes!”

11 080a.jpg

11 080b.jpg

080

MISATO:“This isn't normal.”

KAJI:“What's the power system here?”

11 081a.jpg

11 081b.jpg

11 081c.jpg

081

MISATO:“There are three systems, main, sub, and reserve. It's unthinkable that all three would fail simultaneously.”

KAJI:“Which means...”

11 082a.jpg

11 082b.jpg

082

IKARI:“We should assume that the breakers didn't fail on their own, but were taken down on purpose.”

Dr. Nick: Cuts 080-082: Editing is used here to essentially spell out "Kaji is the saboteur". What remains an open question is whether he also planned his elevator encounter with Misato. Was he hiding in his pocket a remote control to trigger the blackout?

dzzthink: That's quite an interesting theory. It was never clear who caused the blackout, I guess. It wouldn't be surprising for Kaji to pull that stunt while stuck in an elevator with Misato.

UrsusArctos: I suspect our cunning secret agent had everything staged, hence his rush to be with Misato (and have a perfect alibi). Combine this scene with the Episode's English title and "Kaji is the saboteur" goes beyond theory to thinly disguised fact.

11 083a.jpg

11 083b.jpg

083

FUYUTSUKI:“Regardless of the cause, it would be disastrous if an Angel were to attack right now.”

UrsusArctos: Way to go tempting fate, professor! Wait a moment...where did Fuyutsuki get that candle from? I'd imagine Nerv keeping a stack of battery-powered lights for times like this, not candles!

Mr. Tines: I wonder if this reflects real world old-school earthquake preparedness

UrsusArctos: That's very plausible given how prone Japan is to earthquakes, but candles do pose a minor fire hazard and aren't particularly bright compared to flashlights (unless Nerv blew their budget again and could only afford candles).

Dr. Nick: I'm going to assume the candles come from a well-stocked occult rituals room.
