Mr. Tines: A typical urban scene, established Anno-style.

UrsusArctos: Practically an Anno signature shot, in fact! Having seen a very similar shot in Anno's The Return of Ultraman parody, it seems that his love of power lines and transformers goes back a very long way.

BOY (OFF):“Cool! I won, I won!”

UrsusArctos: Picking up from here in the previous episode, we actually see Aoba carrying a guitar. His design in casual wear makes him look pretty cool and relaxed, and it's interesting to see him and his fellow bridge operators outside their work life.

Pluto: UCC brand is a real canned coffee brand that you can still buy from vending machines in Japan. In Hakone, there are even Evangelion-themed vending machines for UCC brand coffee.

UrsusArctos: If I remember correctly, we later see Misato drinking UCC canned coffee with that brand name intact (rather than the "ICC" on display here). I've seen those Evangelion-branded UCC coffee cans myself, and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei even joked about them.

Mr. Tines: Laundromat tech in Tokyo-3 is impressive; not everything got set back by Second Impact.

RITSUKO (OFF):“Hello, Vice Commander.”

Mr. Tines: A peaceful commute, interrupted.

UrsusArctos: Note the very physical newspaper that Fuyutsuki is reading, in contrast to the proliferation of smartphones and iPads on European and North American subways in the real 2015. Japan is a country where people continue to read newspapers. (It's been 4 years since that article was published, and I'm not sure if the pandemic made a difference to those numbers.)

11 013a.jpg

11 013b.jpg

11 013c.jpg

013

RITSUKO:“Good morning, Sir.”

IBUKI & AOBA:“Good morning, Sir!”

11 014a.jpg

11 014b.jpg

11 014c.jpg

014

FUYUTSUKI:“Morning.”

UrsusArctos: Fuyutsuki uses the newspaper as an A.T. Field to keep out his colleagues. That sort of thing (using objects to set up barriers against physical contact) is common across ages and genders in real life, and doesn't necessarily mark him out as a grumpy old man.

11 016d.jpg

016

RITSUKO:“You're quite early today.”

FUYUTSUKI:“Well, I have to go up top in Ikari's place.”

RITSUKO:“I see. Isn't today the City Council's regular meeting?”

11 017a.jpg

017

FUYUTSUKI:“It's a pointless job. Ikari has always thrust the sundry tasks onto me. Without the Magi, I'd be lost.”

RITSUKO:“Speaking of which, the city elections are approaching up there, right?”

FUYUTSUKI:“The City Council is merely a shell. The municipal government, after all, is in fact run by the Magi.”

UrsusArctos: Two episodes later, we discover that the Magi are based on the three aspects of Naoko Akagi's personality. It isn't just Fuyutsuki who is personally dependent on his late colleague or even all of Nerv; all of Tokyo-3 is dependent on the preserved intellect of one long-deceased scientist.

11 018a.jpg

018

IBUKI:“The Magi? You mean the three supercomputers?”

UrsusArctos: As noted in our episode synopsis, it's odd that Maya talks about the supercomputers as though she's only ever heard of them, although she assists Ritsuko in their operation on a daily basis. There's surely a better line to explain to the audience what the Magi (who have been mostly referred to in background dialogue) are?

Mr. Tines: Perhaps (in universe) to clarify that this isn't some other cabal sharing the name, combined with a level of uninvolvement in the civic/political aspects of the city.

11 019.jpg

019

FUYUTSUKI:“Government by majority decision of three different computers. It's a system that is properly in line with the fundamentals of democracy.”

Zusuchan: Interesting how the fact Nerv therefore essentially rules the city without the knowledge and consent of the public is never really brought up or criticized by other characters. Fuyutsuki might say this form of government is basically democratic, but it's ultimately really not, even if Nerv as an organization does relegate the basic job itself to the supercomputers.

thewayneiac: This strikes me as just being an offshoot of the current unfortunate trend of legislatures ceding their lawmaking powers to boards of unelected bureaucratic "experts". Having computers do it is just one step beyond this.

UrsusArctos: Democracy or not, it's properly in line with Fuyutsuki's sense of humor. The younger Fuyutsuki we see in Episode 21 would've erupted in rage against this farce, but his older self seems to have resigned himself to mere sardonic mockery of the system that he's now entrenched in.

11 020.jpg

020

IBUKI:“And the council just obeys their decisions?”

FUYUTSUKI:“It's a most efficient form of government.”

IBUKI:“That's a city of science for you.”

11 021a.jpg

11 021b.jpg

021

IBUKI:“It's really an era where science reigns supreme.”

AOBA:“Talk about an old-fashioned line.”

UrsusArctos: Since she's living in an era where science can take souls out of bodies and insert them into others, truss up artificial gods and create organic supercomputers, she's got a point.

11 022a.jpg

11 022b.jpg

022

FUYUTSUKI:“Come to think of it, you're running an experiment on Unit 00, aren't you?”

11 023.jpg

RITSUKO:“This is still the problem here, huh?”

IBUKI:“Yes, the fact that the conversion efficiency is 0.008 lower than our theoretical value concerns me.”

dzzthink: 0.008 off the theoretical value seems like a scientifically acceptable margin of error.

UrsusArctos: No. It's an absolute value, and like the operator says in the next cut, it's barely within their tolerance limit. Even if 0.008 was a fraction, there are several processes where a deviance of 8 in a 1000 would be wholly unacceptable.

11 030.jpg

030

OPERATOR:“It's just barely within tolerance, though, but what do we do?”

11 031.jpg

031

RITSUKO:“Let's try it again using the same configuration, but lower the reciprocal conversion rate by 0.01.”

IBUKI (OFF):“Roger.”
