IBUKI (OFF):“Depth, 400... 450...”

10 C182.jpg

182

IBUKI:“500... 550...”

10 C183.jpg

183

IBUKI (OFF):“600... 650...”

186

IBUKI (OFF):“900... 950... 1000... 1020... We're over the maximum safe depth.”

Mr. Tines: There's always a generous safety margin.

UrsusArctos: For submarines, there's a relationship between test depth (peacetime safe depth), maximum operating (never-exceed) depth and crush depth, at which the sub folds up like a tin can. Not sure what the JMSDF uses for its submarines, but the German Navy, the most conservative that I know of, sets the test depth for U-boats at half that of the calculated crush depth. Assuming that they're using the German calculation and the safe depth was 1000 meters, Asuka shouldn't be in danger from the pressure until far longer.

10 C187.jpg

187

IBUKI:“Depth is 1300. Estimated target level.”

MISATO:“Asuka, can you see anything?”

UrsusArctos: 1300 meters is the deepest depth achieved by the Soviet submarine K-278 Komsomolets, the deepest diving military submarine ever built. Only specialized deep-diving submersibles go deeper. All this talk of depths and treating magma like water makes me wonder if Sandalphon was originally meant to be underwater rather than under magma. The references to the Kermadec Trench (10+ kilometers deep) in Nadia suggest that Anno and company are familiar with deep ocean trenches.

10 C188a.jpg

10 C188b.jpg

10 C188c.jpg

188

ASUKA (OFF):“No reactions detected. It's not here.”

10 C189.jpg

189

RITSUKO:“It seems the lava current is faster than we thought.”

10 C190.jpg

190

HYUGA:“The target's velocity doesn't match our predictions.”

MISATO:“Hurry up and re-calculate.”

10 C191.jpg

191

MISATO:“Continue the operation. Resume descent.”

10 C192a.jpg

10 C192b.jpg

192

10 C193.jpg

193

10 C194.jpg

194

IBUKI (OFF):“Depth, 1350... 1400...”

10 C195a.jpg

10 C195b.jpg

195

IBUKI (OFF):“Depth, 1480...”

WOMAN (OFF):“A crack has occurred in the second coolant pipe.”

10 C196.jpg

196

IBUKI:“We're over the maximum allowed depth.”

MISATO:“We haven't made contact with the target yet.”

10 C197.jpg

197

MISATO:“Keep going.”

10 C198a.jpg

10 C198b.jpg

10 C198c.jpg

10 C198d.jpg

198

MISATO (OFF):“How's it going, Asuka?”

ASUKA:“Looks like we're still good. I just want to hurry up, finish this, and take a shower.”

MISATO (OFF):“There's a nice hot spring near here. We'll hit it once we're done. Hang in there a little longer.”

10 C199a.jpg

10 C199b.jpg

199

IBUKI (OFF):“Maximum allowed depth plus 120.”

UrsusArctos: Again, that's some very nautical-sounding depth terminology there. I personally think it'd have been a lot cooler to grab Sandalphon out of the Marianas Trench rather than out of magma.

10 C200a.jpg

10 C200b.jpg

10 C200c.jpg

200

UrsusArctos: Strange that the progressive knife's strap should give way. The pressure should crush it against the Eva's thigh, and real magma would be too dense for an object made of metal to sink like it was underwater.

10 C201a.jpg

10 C201b.jpg

201

10 C202.jpg

202

IBUKI (OFF):“Maximum allowed depth plus 200.”

WOMAN (OFF):“Eva Unit 02 has lost its prog knife.”

10 C203a.jpg

10 C203b.jpg

203

HYUGA:“Miss Katsuragi, any more than this and...”

10 C204.jpg

204

HYUGA (OFF):“There's a human on board this time!”

MISATO:“I am in charge of this operation. Proceed, please.”

10 C205.jpg

205

ASUKA:“Misato's right. I'm okay. I can keep going.”

Zusuchan: Both this and Misato's preceding comment hint at the hidden psychological complexities and problems of Misato and Asuka. At first they come off just as the traditional "tough-hero-knows-what's-gotta-be-done" type of deal, but following episodes dismantle that notion quite a bit.

10 C206.jpg

206

10 C207.jpg

207

IBUKI:“Depth, 1780... We've reached the adjusted target depth.”

10 C208a.jpg

10 C208b.jpg

208

ASUKA:“There it is!”

10 C209a.jpg

10 C209b.jpg

209

UrsusArctos: Seen coming into view as a dark ellipsoid, it's visually reminiscent of Buster Machine 03 from Gunbuster. Perhaps that was precisely the reference Anno was going for here?

Dr. Nick: That's quite possible, considering how Gumbuster's final episode culminates with the main characters similarly braving extremely high-pressure depths within the core of the said bomb.

10 C210.jpg

210

HYUGA:“Visual confirmation of the target.”

MISATO:“Prepare to capture.”

10 C211a.jpg

10 C211b.jpg

211

10 C212.jpg

212

RITSUKO:“Both of you are being moved by convection currents, so you'll only have one chance”

10 C213a.jpg

10 C213b.jpg

213

RITSUKO (OFF):“to make contact.”

ASUKA:“I know. Leave it to me.”

10 C214a.jpg

10 C214b.jpg

214

HYUGA (OFF):“T-minus 30 to contact.”

10 C215a.jpg

10 C215b.jpg

215

ASUKA (OFF):“Relative velocity 2.2. I'm now on the axis.”

10 C216a.jpg

10 C216b.jpg

10 C216c.jpg

10 C216d.jpg

10 C216e.jpg

216

10 C217a.jpg

10 C217b.jpg

217

ASUKA (OFF):“Electromagnetic cage deployed. No problems detected.”

10 C218a.jpg

10 C218b.jpg

218

ASUKA (OFF):“The target has been captured.”

MISATO:“Nice one, Asuka.”

10 C219a.jpg

10 C219b.jpg

10 C219c.jpg

10 C219d.jpg

219

ASUKA:“Capture operation completed. I'm coming up now.”

10 C220.jpg

220

10 C221a.jpg

10 C221b.jpg

221

10 C222a.jpg

10 C222b.jpg

222

SHINJI (OFF):“Are you all right, Asuka?”

ASUKA:“Of course! Fear is often worse than the danger, as they say.”

10 C223.jpg

223

ASUKA (OFF):“It really was a piece of cake.”

10 C224a.jpg

10 C224b.jpg

10 C224c.jpg

10 C224d.jpg

224

ASUKA:“But this is more of a sauna suit than a plug suit. I can't wait to get to the hot spring.”

Mr. Tines: On first viewing, this seemed such a blatant death flag for a character with a "blink and you miss it" presence in the OP.

10 C225.jpg

225

RITSUKO:“Looks like the tension let loose all at once.”

10 C226.jpg

226

MISATO:“You think?”

10 C227.jpg

227

RITSUKO:“You were scared about this operation too, weren't you?”

10 C228.jpg

228

MISATO:“Well, yeah, because if we handled it badly, we'd have had a repeat performance.”

10 C229a.jpg

10 C229b.jpg

10 C229c.jpg

10 C229d.jpg

229

RITSUKO:“That's true, the Second Impact. We don't need another of those.”

UrsusArctos: Of course, Ritsuko (who obviously knows better) is keeping up the charade about what happened at 2I...
