UrsusArctos: Mount Asama, it turns out, is the most active volcano in all of Japan. The wiki page for the volcano shows it with significantly more snow (in winter), so its barren nature here is probably attention to detail about the perpetual post-2I summer.

070

UrsusArctos: That's the same kind of recon helicopter that we saw in Episode 01 Cut 127 hovering over Sachiel.

071

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“This just isn't clear enough.”

AOBA (OFF):“But just as the report from Mt. Asama Earthquake Research Laboratory says, this shadow is definitely suspicious.”

072

FUYUTSUKI:“Of course, we can't ignore this.”

RITSUKO:“What is the Magi's judgment?”

IBUKI:“Fifty-fifty.”

FUYUTSUKI:“Is someone there yet?”

AOBA:“Captain Katsuragi's already on site.”

073

074

075

MISATO:“Not yet. Another 500, please.”

OPERATOR:“You're too deep!”

076

077

UrsusArctos: The depiction of magma as though it were some sort of glowing, superheated red water is all wrong. A probe have to drill its way down instead of using a propeller - if it could withstand the heat and pressure. And it would be pretty hard to get any sensor readings with that much superheated rock all around.

078

079

MISATO:“If it breaks, we'll pay for the damage. 200 more.”

OPERATOR:“Ms. Katsuragi!”

Zusuchan: A hint at Misato's obsession with eradicating the Angels? Seems quite likely.

080

081

HYUGA:“We're monitoring a reaction!”

082

083

MISATO:“Begin analysis!”

HYUGA:“Yes, Ma'am!”

084

085

086

087

WOMAN (OFF):“The probe has imploded due to the extreme pressure.”

088

MISATO:“What about the analysis?”

HYUGA:“Just barely made it. The pattern is blue.”

MISATO:“There's no doubt,”

089

MISATO (OFF):“it's an Angel.”

UrsusArctos: Say hello to Sandalphon, the Angel of the Unborn. The creepy resemblance to a human embryo is, as with all things Angel-related, no coincidence.

Zusuchan: In that way it's also similar to Adam.

090

MISATO:“As of now, this laboratory will be completely sealed off! It's under Nerv's jurisdiction now!”

091

MISATO:“Any and all access to the outside world is prohibited, and all records of the events of the past six hours are classified.”

092

093

MISATO:“Request an A-1 7 from Commander Ikari, top priority!”

TEXT:“Seismic Wave Analysis Room 2 Seismic Wave Analysis Room 1”

UrsusArctos: The exchange that begins in this cut is a straight reference to Dr. Stone's conversation with Major Manchek in both the book and movie versions of The Andromeda Strain and it's not the only one in this episode.

094

AOBA:“Watch what you're saying. This is an open line.”

MISATO (OFF):“I know.”

095

MISATO:“Hurry up and switch to a scrambled line.”

096

IKARI:“Correct.”

COMMITTEEMAN ?:“A-17?! We're going to launch an offensive?”

097

COMMITTEEMAN ?:“Unacceptable, it's too dangerous. You had better not say you've forgotten what happened fifteen years ago.”

UrsusArctos: The people in this conference know better than any others alive what happened during Second Impact. All their smug-faced fearmongering about taking the offensive looks like it's to beat down Gendo, not voice genuine concerns.

Zusuchan: Perhaps they don't want Gendo having a live Angel sample or 2I did not go entirely as planned?

UrsusArctos: I tend towards Fuyutsuki's assessment of them at the end of Episode 14: for all their low cunning and manipulativeness, Seele are ultimately worthless fools whose only job is to complain.

Zusuchan: Seele is also an organization with a huge amount of power who were behind Second Impact-I hardly doubt they're that stupid. They are fools, I believe, but their foolishness is more due to their wishes than to general all-around incompetence, so I can't quite understand these comments all the same.

UrsusArctos: As Axel Oxenstierna said, "An nescis, mi fili, quantilla prudentia mundus regatur?" You'll eventually see what I mean about Seele being utter fools.

098

IKARI:“This is a chance to move from a consistently defensive posture to an offensive one for the first time.”

099

KEEL:“The risk is too large.”

100

IKARI:“However, I'm sure you're aware how important a live Angel sample would be.”

101

KEEL:“We will not tolerate failure.”

FUYUTSUKI:“Failure? If we fail, it will result in the extinction of the human race.”

UrsusArctos: Why is it Fuyutsuki's turn to spout such nonsense now?!? Or is he simply alluding to the failure of Nerv's mission on the whole?

102

FUYUTSUKI:“You're really sure about this?”

103

Mr. Tines: Everything is proceeding according to plan.
