001

Mr. Tines: Civilian life in/near Tokyo-3 carries on as normal, despite the recent excitement.

UrsusArctos: Interesting to see real crowds and a smidgen of variety in the architecture of the taller buildings. This is one of the few times in NGE that Tokyo-3 feels like a functional city instead of a glorified Potemkin Village.

002

ASUKA:“Lucky! I'm so lucky that I can go shopping with you today, Mr. Kaji!”

Mr. Tines: Kaji takes a stoic attitude towards this burdensome duty.

003

KAJI (OFF):“What?! Isn't this the swimsuit section?”

ASUKA:“Hey! Hey! How do you like this?”

ANNOUNCEMENT:“Please allow us to announce a call for a customer. Mr. Yamazaki from Ibaragi City, your friend is waiting for you.”

004

KAJI:“Slow down, school girl. Aren't you a little young for that?”

005

ASUKA:“You're just so behind the times, Mr. Kaji. This is pretty normal nowadays.”

ANNOUNCEMENT:“Please come to Customer service on the first floor.”

Mr. Tines: And 25 years after the anime, that seems a fairly conservative design (= large area of cloth) compared with what we see girls of similar age wearing in the obligatory beach episode even in low-fanservice titles; so, what she said.

006

KAJI:“Really? I had no idea.”

ASUKA:“But this is the big school trip. You've got to go all out!”

007

KAJI (OFF):“And where are you going for the trip?”

TEXT:“Travel Pamphlet Public Middle school 1”

Pluto: Japanese students have an annual class trip every year in the summer to various locations in Japan. Okinawa is a popular vacation destination in Japan. It's like the Japanese Hawaii so this is a premium class trip.

UrsusArctos: Curious. While I'm familiar with the Japanese annual summer class trip, I have no idea where these trips usually land up. The Ghibli movie Ocean Waves actually features a rather middle-of-the-road school in Kochi going on a school trip to Hawaii, but that was set in the late 80s. Perhaps schools couldn't send their classes as far as afield once the bubble economy burst in the early 90s?

008

ASUKA (OFF):“Okinawa!”

TEXT:“Activity Destinations Day 1 - Depart from New Tokyo-3 International Airport to Okinawa (New Kadena, Main Island) Day 2 - Main Island to Kerama Islands to Miyako Island Day 3 - Miyako Island to Arrive at New Tokyo-3 International Airport”

009

ASUKA:“We're even scheduled to go scuba diving!”

010

KAJI (OFF):“Scuba diving...”

TEXT:“Schedule Day 2 Wake up Breakfast (buffet) Scuba Diving (first time) Lunch (boxed) Scuba Diving (second time)”

011

KAJI:“Come to think of it, it's been three years since I've gone diving.”

ASUKA:“Say, where did you go for your school trip?”

KAJI:“Oh, we didn't have one.”

012

ASUKA:“Why not?”

013

KAJI:“Because of the Second Impact.”

SUBTITLE:“Episode #10 Magma Diver”

014

015

Frogatr: Pen Pen isn't wearing his backpack here. A rare sight. (Finally, Pen Pen fanservice!!)

UrsusArctos: You're right, this might be the only time we see him without it! If there's any explanation about what his backpack does, it sure hasn't been translated into English yet.

016

ASUKA (OFF):“I can't go on the trip?!”

UrsusArctos: Pen Pen's face here reminds me of a Noh mask although I find it impossible to figure a match in the 60+ basic types of Noh mask listed. The animated reflections of the ceiling light around his face as he opens his beak are a gorgeous instance of attention to detail.

017

MISATO:“Right.”

018

ASUKA:“Why not?!”

Pluto: This where Misato changes her preferred beer brand from Yebisu to Boa. Yebisu is an actual beer whereas I've never seen Boa.

UrsusArctos: Apparently someone on the ancient JAE FAQ (Olivier Hague?) identified "Boa" and "Kuroshio Bussan" as references to the 1969 anime movie "Sora Tobu Yurei Sen", where Boa Juice is a highly addictive and poisonous beverage. Looking at the Anime News Network page for the show, it all checks out. As an aside, one of the key animators on that movie was a young Hayao Miyazaki, which probably explains why that particular reference was chosen!

019

MISATO:“Because you're on standby for combat duty.”

020

ASUKA:“You never told me anything about that!”

021

MISATO:“I just told you.”

dzzthink: Scenes like this and also in 024 and 054, Asuka is positioned so that she is either looking down on the other characters or is taking up most of the shot. Although we were introduced to her in the previous episodes, this is probably the most Asuka-dominant episode where she is the main focus and the sole Eva pilot fighting the Angel. This episode most certainly changed my perceptions of the series by reinforcing Asuka's character, thus changing its tone and humor.

022

ASUKA:“Who in the hell decided that?!”

thewayneiac: How dare you let a little thing like saving the world get in the way of the class trip?!

023

MISATO:“Me, the Operations Planning Manager.”

024

ASUKA:“Hey, why don't you stop slurping that tea and say something! You're a man, aren't you?”

025

SHINJI:“Actually, I kind of anticipated it would be like this.”

026

ASUKA:“And you've already given up?”

027

028

ASUKA:“How pathetic. Nothing's more useless than a housebroken male.”

SHINJI:“Please don't talk about me like that.”

MISATO (OFF):“I know how you must feel,”

Mr. Tines: Exchanges like this establish that Asuka has little respect for Shinji. Just because he's the MC it doesn't mean he has to get the girl.

UrsusArctos: Agreed, and it makes Evangelion very refreshing next to the vast number of titles where the MC "gets the girl". Of course, there are many obsessive fans who interpret Asuka's lack of respect for Shinji as being part of a tsundere personality and insist that she's in love with him. Whatever one's personal shipping preferences may be, Asuka packs an ocean of tsun tsun and absolutely none of the dere dere, making her utterly incompatible with Shinji by any objective analysis.

Zusuchan: Asuka's dislike of Shinji tends to be genuine, but she also does like certain aspects of his personality and is definitely at least somewhat romantically interested in him.

dzzthink: Nice positioning of the beer can in this shot to separate the characters as Misato tries to play peacemaker. Shinji is also seated and in a lower position - the power dynamics are way off!

UrsusArctos: The power dynamics are never in Shinji's favor, whether he's with Gendo, Misato, or Asuka. The one possible exception is with Kaworu, but that's a whole different conversation.

029

MISATO (OFF):“but there's just no helping this. There's always the possibility of an Angel attack while you're gone.”

Frogatr: ...and his backpack is on again. I wonder how he puts it on.

030

ASUKA (OFF):“It's always standby! Standby, standby, standby! We've always got to be ready to defend against an enemy who may not even come! Why don't you try to find out where they are,”

TEXT:“Sohryu”

031

ASUKA:“and attack them for once?!”

Dr. Nick: Asuka lampshades a super robot trope that's as old as the genre itself: the good guys have a strong tendency to just rely on turtling even though the baddies never send more than one monster at them at a time. This is usually explained away by having the enemy advance base being hidden on the far side of the Moon or somewhere similar, with the end boss residing in a different solar system altogether.

032

MISATO:“If we could do that, we'd have already done it.”

033

MISATO (OFF):“Look, think of this as a good opportunity. While the rest of your class is on the trip, the two of you can study a little.”

034

MISATO:“Or do you think I don't know about these?”

035

Zusuchan: Funny that Shinji's grades should be so bad, considering his parents seem to be geniuses.

dzzthink: It could be the fact he is taken away from school so often as he is an Eva pilot.

UrsusArctos: In addition to the Eva training and house chores taking away time from homework and studies (which can get pretty brutal by Grade 8 or 9) it's possible that his old school didn't operate at the same academic level.

036

ASUKA:“You're greatly mistaken if you thought I wouldn't find out about these. What you get on your tests at school is piped directly to me.”

037

ASUKA:“It's ridiculous. Who cares about grades? I've got absolutely no interest in the old-fashioned grading system.”

Zusuchan: Pretty sure the Germans also have a graded school system (grades range from one to six, IIRC), so unless in the Eva universe things somewhat changed thanks to Second Impact or Asuka had a special childhood, the "old-fashioned grading system" comment doesn't make much sense and neither does Misato's following "do as the Romans do".

038

MISATO:“When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Try to adjust to Japanese school life.”

039

ASUKA:“No way!”

040

HIKARI:“Asuka, I'll bring you some souvenirs!”

KENSUKE:“Well, it's just too bad for you guys!”

TOJI:“I'll have enough fun for both of ya!”

Dr. Nick: There goes our chance for a Gunbuster crossover episode.

UrsusArctos: After all the weird aircraft seen earlier in the series and those beautiful Sukhois on the aircraft carrier, we finally get a perfectly conventional-looking commercial airliner - knowing Anno, that's probably a super-rare Tupolev 204. Toji, Hikari and Kensuke are totally in character. Note the "JAN" tote bags - it seems like Anno or someone else decided to merge Japan Air Lines with All Nippon Airways in the Evangelion universe to create Japan All Nippon.

041

042

WOMAN (OFF):“Paste the observation data on Mt. Asama from Balthasar to Melchior”

043

WOMAN (OFF):“as soon as possible.”

044

thewayneiac: Ha! Luffy just charging in when the other characters tell him to wait never gets old.

045

thewayneiac: (singing) He heard one guitar that really blew him away...!

046

047

RITSUKO:“A school trip? That's pretty carefree for times like these.”

048

MISATO:“Well, it's because the times are so hard that they want to have a little fun while they can.”
