Title2

EYECATCH B:“EPISODE #08: ASUKA STRIKES!”

08 C099a.jpg

08 C099b.jpg

099

The Over the Rainbow, taking evasive action.

SE <<WHREE WHREE WHREE WHREE>>

FIRST OFFICER (RADIO):“All ships, evasive maneuvers, taking note of the distance between ships!”

100
Missing number.
UrsusArctos: It's a shame they chose to give this shot a skip. It'd have been awesome to see a shot of the ships maneuver from overhead. Incidentally, the cut storyboard highlights the point I made in Cut 011 about being too close, the frigate at the bottom looks like it's about to collide with the carrier in the center.

08 C101a.jpg

101

BGM Start: E-6 [ANGEL ATTACK]

The bridge (the camera is outside of it).
The captain is looking through a pair of binoculars, and the first officer is holding a radio handset.

1ST OFFICER (ON):“What's the status report?”

ANNOUNCER (OFF):“Cymbeline has gone silent. Titus Andronichus is unable to obtain confirmation of the target!”

CAPTAIN:“Damn it! What is happening!?”

Kendrix: The German 2000s dub rendered this as “Nerv delivery service! Would you like to order information about the enemy, or maybe some useful countermeasures?” I lol’d.

08 C101b.jpg

Misato appears at the entrance.

MISATO:“Hey, NERV here. How would you like information on and precise countermeasures against this invisible enemy—?”

The captain speaks without a single glance at Misato.

CAPTAIN:“We're in the midst of combat! I cannot permit visitors onto the bridge!”

08 C102a.jpg

08 C102b.jpg

102

Kensuke, filming with his camera, with Misato in the foreground. Misato speaks spitefully.

MISATO:“In my personal opinion, this would certainly seem to be an Angel attack.”

CAPTAIN (OFF):“All ships, fire at will!!”

MAN (RADIO - OFF):“Roger.”

Kendrix: She is definitely enjoying this.

08 C102c.jpg

Misato's expression becomes serious.

MISATO:“It won't be any use!”

08 C103a.jpg

08 C103b.jpg

08 C103c.jpg

103

Four torpedoes are launched continuously into the water.

SE <<Shfoom shfoom shfoom shfoom>>

UrsusArctos: Naval nerdery note - if that's a US Mark 32 torpedo launcher, it should fire only three torpedoes, not four.

Zusuchan: The sound effects being written in the script in the way they are is extremely bemusing.

08 C104a.jpg

08 C104b.jpg

08 C104c.jpg

104

The four torpedoes move towards a wave crest.
Four great pillars of water rise into the air!!
But the wave crest takes no notice of them!

SE <<Fwsssssshh brkow brkow brkow brkow gwasssh>>

08 C105a.jpg

08 C105b.jpg

08 C105c.jpg

105

The wave crest crashes directly into a frigate! A column of water shoots upwards. The column of water effortlessly splits the frigate in two!!

SE <<Fwsssssshh crash BAM>>

UrsusArctos: For the longest time we thought this was an American Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate with a misplaced funnel but on a second inspection the vessel is almost certainly a Hatsuyuki-class destroyer of the JMSDF.

08 C106a.jpg

08 C106c.jpg

106

Kaji, watching the battle from the side of the aircraft carrier. The frigate from the previous cut explodes.

SE <<Blaaaam>>

Zusuchan: I've always felt like Kaji's a bit casually suicidal-it's not that he wants to die, but rather that when faced with a life-threatening situation, he never seems particularly concerned about the possibility of death. We can see that further in episodes 19 and 21.

08 C107.jpg

107

Talking to himself.
This is the first time Kaji has seen an Angel first hand.

KAJI:“So this isn't enough to breach an AT-Field.”

08 C108b.jpg

108

Misato and the others peering out of a window.

MISATO:“But why would the Angel be here... Could it be after Unit 02?”

UrsusArctos: There's a further discussion of this in Cut 134 but Misato clearly hadn't expected to run into an Angel in the middle of the ocean. And it makes sense; I can't imagine her bringing Toji and Kensuke if she considered an Angel battle likely.

08 C109b.jpg

109

Track up towards the tanker.

08 C110a.jpg

08 C110c.jpg

08 C110d.jpg

110

Inside the tanker. An exit to a walkway outside, seen at a low angle from a landing of a stairwell.

BGM End: E-6 [ANGEL ATTACK]

SHINJI (OFF to begin with):“Hey, where are we going?”

On the other side of the hatch, Shinji is being pulled by the hand, dragged along by Asuka. Asuka turns back, peers into the stairwell, and speaks.

ASUKA (BACK):“Wait here a second.”

Kendrix: She is going to be dragging him a lot. The subsequent embarrassing moment could have been completely avoided if she had bothered to explain that she was gonna change clothes.

08 C111b.jpg

08 C111c.jpg

08 C111d.jpg

111

Asuka passes in front of Shinji, heading down the stairs. Shinji, with a displeased expression.

SHINJI:“What are you doing......”

08 C112.jpg

112

A dress, panties, and bra, having been removed.

SE <<Rustle rustle>>

08 C113.jpg

113

Shinji waiting outside.

SE <<Rubber noises>>

08 C114b.jpg

114

Asuka, putting her arms into her plugsuit.

Line: Why does Asuka change in such an open public place? Don't they have just a small bathroom in which she can do it?

Kendrix: I love how it just flat out says “overreacts” like the script is dissing her. He was probably just wondering what the heck she is doing in a deadly emergency. Of course in her mind she would be the only one doing something while he stands around, and thus, the communication fail begins.

08 C114c.jpg

Shinji leans forward stealthily over the stairs.

08 C114d.jpg

Asuka overreacts.

ASUKA (BACK):“*Shriek~!* Don't peep! You pervert!!”

08 C114e.jpg

Shinji hastily pulls his head back.

SHINJI:“S-sorry...”

08 C115a.jpg

08 C115b.jpg

08 C115c.jpg

115

Asuka in a huff. She puts her fingers into her glove and makes sure of the fit.

ASUKA:“Why are boys such perverted idiots!
(Bleeds into the next cut)

Kendrix: This attitude of not trusting men besides a few unreachable, over-idealized ones is probably due to hearing her father cheating as a kid, or at least “replacing” her mom rather quickly.

Nowadays its rather trendy but there’s a big difference between “a lot of men are creeps and sexists” (self-evident truth) and “all men cant be trusted” - usually that is a result of trauma-induced hypervigilance. It would be super convenient if you could tell if someone’s trustworthy by just looking at their chest, but you can’t.

08 C116b.jpg

116

Shinji, sitting on the stairs, sighs.

SHINJI:“(Sigh)

08 C117a.jpg

08 C117b.jpg

117

Asuka, having finished putting on the plugsuit. She brings her long hair out from under the collar.

SE <<Fwomp...>>

She pushes a switch on her wrist, and the loose suit contracts tightly.

SE <<...Psssh>>

08 C118a.jpg

08 C118b.jpg

118

Asuka's face in profile. She wears her most serious expression. She speaks to herself.

ASUKA:“...Asuka, here we go.”

Javi2541997: Despite being ready to fight she looks like a little bit scared.

UrsusArctos: A hint that, under her fiery, domineering behavior, she is apprehensive about this too. After all, who wouldn't?

Kendrix: This, like 096, is another cut that I’d label as super important & very telling, a hint to what she’s really thinking when no one else is in the room. Though my read is not so much that she’s scared of the fight, but that she’s anxious because the time she’s been waiting for has finally come: The time to prove herself, when she will have to justify the self-image that has sustained her so far.

Additional Commentary

Kendrix: It’s actually very common of ppl who were considered “gifted” to get performance anxiety because once you’ve build your identity around that, every test of your abilities becomes an existential threat. (This is why you should praise a child for their actions & attitude, not passive things out of their control like “youre smart” or “youre pretty”)

Though by this point the confidence still wins over the doubt, she’s telling herself to “stay in character”. “Let’s go” implies some level of forcing herself to go through this.

Indeed the “looping” scene in ep 22’ would later lampshade how she is essentially playing the character of the Second Child(TM) – but “none of this is the real me”
