Profile

Evangelion Unit-05 (エヴァンゲリオン5号機, Evangerion Gogouki) is a new Evangelion unit to be introduced in Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance. Eva-05 was first unveiled in the preview for 2.0 at the end of Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone and appears twice in 2.0's first theatrical trailer. The first clear glimpses of the Eva were provided via promotional images of the Revoltech figure (to be released in 6/09).

Designation

Eva-05 is described as a Provisional Eva unit. This implies a temporary and/or makeshift nature, although no official explanation is yet available. The Eva's full designation is "Specialized Seal-Guarding Limited Use Weapon: Artificial Human Evangelion: Local Specifications Model 05" (封印監視特化型限定兵器 人造人間エヴァンゲリオン 局地仕様 仮設5号機)[1]. Nothing is currently known about the "seal" that Eva-05 is apparently dedicated to guarding.

Features

Designs for Eva-05 and pilot Mari

Eva-05 appears to, like all Evangelions, be intrinsically biological in nature. Unusually, however, only the head and torso seem to be organic, whereas the limbs have been entirely replaced with mechanical substitutes. The unit's coloration reflects this apparent disparity: the head and body are silver, whereas the main color of the limbs is green. (This situation is mimicked, albeit in reverse, by the plugsuit of Eva-05's pilot, Mari.)

The left arm terminates in a weapon resembling a jousting lance, with intricate fixtures at its base. The right arm instead bears a pincer-style "claw".[2] In place of normal legs, the Eva has four long mechanical appendages that terminate in wheel bases. The joints of the legs can be realigned to permit both rolling- and walking-based locomotion.

The helmet bears an red visor and a conical projection on the forehead. There is a tall formation of unknown function over the hatch for the entry plug. Both shoulder pylons possess areas that light up when the Eva is powered.

Power System

Pylon pantographs?

Eva-05's pylons are topped with stirrup-like antennae which, in the preview, are seen scraping against tracks in the ceiling of an underground tunnel (animated GIF). Their function is possibly, in a manner similar to the overhead power collectors on trams, to transfer electric current to the Eva in lieu of an umbilical cable. If so, Eva-05's movements would be largely restricted to tunnels specifically constructed with such tracks. The trailer contains cuts from a sequence where Eva-05 switches from internal to external power, including a monitor screen that features what may be a schematized visualization of the power collectors switching positions.

Pilot

The theatrical trailer for Eva 2.0 depicts Mari in a plugsuit numbered "05", wearing a large helmet with "EVANGELION-05" written across the visor. The helmet and the presence of attached tubing suggest that there may be something unusual about the control scheme for Eva-05.

Notes

  1. "Keywords" Poster.
  2. In the original preview, both arms are depicted with the jousting lances, while the published final design and the Revoltech model both have the lance on the right arm alone. This may indicate an actual change to the design -- as a precedent, the design for Eva-02 that appears in the preview is not the final one -- or possibly that Eva-05 will just "swap out parts". Further confirmation is required.
